An American Haunting review

Posted : 12 years, 7 months ago on 31 August 2011 12:40

It was good to spend time and take a few scares, but the ending is too predictable... It seems they wanted to give a rational explanation of the events but were kind of on the fence, almost as if they hadn't explained right (not in order to leave doubt in the air, but in the explanation poorly performed). Perhaps it would have been better if they had chosen to leave between the haunt be really a curse, or let the phenomena being the reflection of the trauma of the girl explained naturally. The mixture of these two options, in my opinion, left the rather weak script.

An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick, especially since it had a rather poor rating on Imdb, but since I always had a weak spot for Donald Sutherland, I thought I might as well give it a try. Eventually, even though I usually don’t care much about the genre (in my opinion, ‘The Exorcist’ is in fact one of the most overrated movies ever made), I thought that this movie was actually fairly entertaining and it was above all rather well directed. Unfortunately, I was not really convinced by the rather far-fetched twist at the end but it is unfortunately inherent to the genre, I’m afraid. Furthermore, the inclusion of the modern story didn’t add much and could have been easily completely removed if you ask me. Still, it was really neat to see again the lovely Rachel Hurd-Wood. Indeed, it was her 2nd movie after ‘Peter Pan’ but, unfortunately, the movies she made afterwards became more and more obscure and it seems she never managed to really breakthrough in spite of her interesting potential. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though it was not very original, I thought it was rather well done and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like this genre.

An American Haunting review

Obviously this movie isn't popular just by looking at the ratings but I personally didn't find it too bad. I've watched it more than once, which is saying something.

If you like movies with a bit of a twisted plot, then you may just find it interesting. I was somewhat confused to start with but by the end of the movie it made a lot more sense. It's one of those movies where you need to wait until the second half of the movie to start seeing what's going on, and I'm not saying that is a bad thing.

Haunting with a Twist

An American Haunting begins as a typical haunting thriller with all the mystery and intrigue surrounding its loosely based story around true events. But the plot quickly reveals a dark and twisted fate by the movie's end and we are almost fooled into believing that this would be Donald Sutherland's first attempt at a role that did not end like every one of his other films (I tried not to reveal the ending but if you have seen any of Sutherland's films, you may know exactly what I am getting at).
