“Director Ben Wheatley and writer Amy Jump are doing something very unique here, something I haven't ever seen before, and take some filmmaking risks t”
“To say that Ben Wheatley is one of the freshest voices in modern cinema is an understatement. That distinction, however, does not come without controversy. While few would deny that his pictures defy the stale formulas of filmmaking, there is something of a divisiveness regarding their content. In short, it is not uncommon to see outright aversion to his offerings, some even going as far as to call his work pointless or confusing. Well, if you were on that bandwagon then A Field in England will do little to change that train of thought. "Plot: A group of deserters, from different walks of life, flee the ravages of the English Civil War only to find that the hellish misery of existence rages on even in the unassuming expanses of a field. Unique in its presentation and constantly toying with surrealism, the film both mystifies and illuminates in a frequently alternating fashion. " Date: 2/6/2022 Viewed: Shudder First Viewing Note: When A Field in England was released in 2014, I remember hearing about it but never getting around to seeing it. I decided to watch it because it's currently streaming on Shudder (As of 2/6/2022). In my opinion, A Field in England is an interesting take on the war film genre. Outside the American Civil War, I haven't seen many films that do war films before the twentieth century, let alone in the horror film genre. It felt refreshing for so"
"First viewing - Nov. 28th I remember seeing trailers for A Field in England back when it came out, and I decided then that it looked like a pretentious drug-friendly movie so I wrote it off. But Ben Wheatley has proved to be an interesting filmmaker, so I figured I'd finally give it a chance. And those first impressions aren't wrong, but there's enough going on here in addition to those aspects that I was engaged with the whole thing. There's a bit too much left off the page, which requires som"
"I am avoiding posting my favorite moment from this movie because the moment is so jarring, and one of the key details about that moment is the soundtrack. Here's another favorite: "
"05.03 Another excellent film from Ben Wheatley. At times it feels like a theatre production with its minimal cast and its limited setting - all of it takes place in a field. It moves from the theatrical to the cinematically spectacular. The black and white chiaroscuro cinematography is a visual treat. The hallucinogenic visuals and sounds are wonderful. There are some very funny scenes too and the dialogue is witty and unexpected, particularly when a dying man requests as his final message to"
