Vale Abraão (1993)
Based on a Portuguese variation of the classic novel Madame Bovary (about the unfaithful wife of a doctor) this elegant long film may be too leisurely for some tastes but I found it captivating and, seduced by the beauty of the Douro valley, uppped sticks and headed to North Portugal.
Kenji's rating:
R.I.P, and thank you.
Manoel de Oliveira was born in Portugal in 1908. He started making films in the 1920s (though Douro Faina Fluvial was not released until 1931), unusually became more prolific in old age- he was still going strong well into his 10th decade as a film-maker! This list is a selection of notable films. He attributed his longevity to sardines.
