Ultimate Horror Films

Sort by: Showing 1-50 of 68
Decade: Rating: List Type:
People who added this item 1195 Average listal rating (688 ratings) 8.2 IMDB Rating 8.1

An early German expressionist film. Great atmosphere with gothic aesthetics.

Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1682 Average listal rating (969 ratings) 7.9 IMDB Rating 7.9
Nosferatu (1922)

Probably the most famous German expressionist film. It's an interpretation of Dracula, and as a result Bram Stokers wife managed to ban the film. Luckily a few copies survived. Max Schreck provides an eerie and memorable performance as Count Orlock. The films effective use of shadows and light contribute to ominous atmosphere.

The Innocents (1961)

People who added this item 515 Average listal rating (300 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 7.5
The Haunting (1963)

Arguably the most effective ghost film. You never actually see any ghosts in The Haunting, their presence is merely implied.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1024 Average listal rating (560 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 7.7
Repulsion (1965)

A woman gradually loses touch with reality. Her madness is reflected in her perceivably disintegrating surroundings.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 319 Average listal rating (173 ratings) 8.5 IMDB Rating 8

Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 480 Average listal rating (299 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.2

A comedic vampire flick.

Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 2525 Average listal rating (1555 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 8

A woman becomes unstable and paranoid after falling pregnant by what she believes to be an unseen force. She comes to realise that her husband and neighbours are part of this conspiracy.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 100 Average listal rating (65 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 6.5

Horror icon Ingrid Pitt performs as seductive lesbian vampire Carmilla/Mircalla/Millarca. Based on Le Fanu's Carmilla, this is one of Hammer Horror's better vampire films.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 82 Average listal rating (36 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.4

The Devil takes control of children in the English countryside. Mark Gatis has placed this film within the "Folk Horror" genre.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1066 Average listal rating (626 ratings) 7.6 IMDB Rating 7.5

A conservative Christian detective investigates the disappearance of a girl on a Scottish island. He is shocked to find that the residents openly follow a Pagan religion, and ultimately an unfortunate fate befalls him. Starring Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 4003 Average listal rating (2639 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 8
The Exorcist (1973)

I am not usually a fan of films that overtly promote Christianity. That being said, The Exorcist provided ground-breaking visuals for the horror genre and Linda Blair's performance as a girl possessed by a demon is very strong.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 2691 Average listal rating (1729 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.4
Carrie (1976)

An interpretation of Stephen King's novel of the same name. Sissy Spaceck plays Carrie, a strange outcast with telekinetic powers who takes revenge on her abusive mother and classmates. Spaceck was perfect for the role, completely embodying and understanding the weirdo archetype.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 94 Average listal rating (64 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 6.5

Horror legend Karen Black stars in this film about a family taking care of a nefarious house. Bette Davis also makes an appearance.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 479 Average listal rating (267 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 7.4
House (1977)

A very weird Japanese film about a girl who takes her school friends to visit her aunt in the Japanese countryside. It's essentially a ghost house and witch tale, but it's ridiculous nature make it highly entertaining.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1174 Average listal rating (735 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 7.4
Suspiria (1977)

Argento's classic film about a student experiencing strange phenomenon at a German dance academy. It falls within the witchcraft and supernatural sub-genres. The use of garish colour give the film a nightmarish and fairy-tale like quality.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 66 Average listal rating (38 ratings) 6.4 IMDB Rating 6.3
Alucarda (1978)

Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1777 Average listal rating (994 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 7.4
Eraserhead (1978)

A rather disturbing surreal David Lynch film about isolation and madness. Not necessarily a horror film but certainly horrific.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 807 Average listal rating (487 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 7.5

A remake of the German expressionist classic. The film is beautifully shot and incredibly gothic.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 4646 Average listal rating (3282 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 8.4
Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott's infamous classic. This is the only film within the Alien franchise that fits firmly within the horror genre, thanks to the atmosphere Scott manages to create. Giger's alien designs are so beautiful, unique and horrific. The film is interesting in that the Alien was not depicted as a highly evolved "civilized" being but as a monstrous killing machine. Sigourney Weaver is superb as the strong and formidable Ellen Ripley.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 330 Average listal rating (202 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 6.6
Inferno (1980)

A sequel to Suspiria, dealing with a series of murders connected to the "Second Mother". Like Suspiria, Argento makes use of colour to create a dream like ambience.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1539 Average listal rating (1004 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.5

Another controversial film amongst Horror fans. The creators of Friday the 13th have openly admitted to taking many of the elements of John Carpenter's Halloween. To Carpenter's formula, the creators added more gore, violence and sex. The film was seen as too obvious and has been blamed for the crappy and reductive slasher films of the 80's. Regardless of these criticisms, I enjoyed Friday the 13th .
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 6365 Average listal rating (4407 ratings) 8.2 IMDB Rating 8.4
The Shining (1980)

More of a Kubrick film than an accurate interpretation of the Stephen King novel. The Shining is a bit of a polarising film and it is not universally loved by Horror aficionados. Some have debated as to whether it is a psychological thriller or a supernatural horror film, but I feel that towards the end the supernatural element becomes quite apparent. I for one think that it's an effective horror film, even if it takes a very different direction from King's novel.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1370 Average listal rating (891 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.5

A horror comedy concerning two friends who are attacked by a werewolf in the English countryside. One dies, the other begins transforming back in London. Great exaggerated aesthetics with some surreal aspects.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1955 Average listal rating (1251 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 7.3
Poltergeist (1982)

A family is tormented by annoying spirits in their new house.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 2048 Average listal rating (1379 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.5

My favourite spirit possession movie. The over the top and humorously intense representation of demonic possession make this film great. No use of CGI here, everything that happens in the film happened in physical reality, which made shooting this film an arduous and creative experience. I also like the fact that it doesn't make use of Christian religious ideas to explain the possession. Definitely one of the best horror films of all time. The remake was awful and unnecessary.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 464 Average listal rating (281 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 6.7
The Hunger (1983)

Catherine Deneuve plays, Miriam, an ancient vampire who never ages, but unfortunately her vampiric lovers do. Also starring David Bowie and Susan Sarandon, with an appearance by seminal Gothic Rock band Bauhaus at the beginning of the film.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 2794 Average listal rating (1804 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.5

A unique take on the slasher sub-genre. A group of friend are terrorised by an evil spirit who kills them in their dreams.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 295 Average listal rating (184 ratings) 6.9 IMDB Rating 6.7

A very dark fairy tale based on the work of Angela Carter.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 700 Average listal rating (468 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7.3

My favourite zombie film. Unrealistic and funny, a group of death rockers and morticians attempt to escape corpses that have been resurrected in a nearby cemetery. Infinitely better than the string of unimaginative and boring Zombie films that have been released in recent years.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 661 Average listal rating (458 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 7.1
Fright Night (1985)

Another comedic 80's film, dealing with a teenager who suspects his neighbour is vampire.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1396 Average listal rating (931 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 7
Hellraiser (1987)

Based on Clive Barker's novel "Hellbound Heart", the film is concerned with a supernatural group of entities known as the cenobites who believe the way to enlightenment is through the maximisation of pleasure and pain. The cenobites don't actually feature heavily in the film until towards the end. Rather the story centres on Frank, a man who has escaped them and requires the consumption live humans provided by his lover Julia to attain a full human form again. Their plans are however hindered by Frank's niece, Julia.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 2050 Average listal rating (1374 ratings) 7.5 IMDB Rating 7.8
Misery (1990)

Another Stephen King adaptation. A writer is held hostage by an obsessed fan after she recovers him from a car accident.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 3142 Average listal rating (2079 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.4
Dracula (1992)

Coppola's interpretation of Stoker's Dracula, this film is probably the closest adaptation to the novel that has been released. My only complaint about the film is the unnecessary backstory of Dracula's origins.
Cyneliam's rating:

A fantastic interpretation of Anne Rice's homoerotic vampire novel. Anne Rice worked on the screenplay, which explains its accuracy. Starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 84 Average listal rating (38 ratings) 5.7 IMDB Rating 5.8
Necronomicon (1994)

A collection of three HP Lovecraft interpretations. Very over the top, but that's what makes it great.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1056 Average listal rating (613 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 7.2
Ring (1998)

A Japanese film about a vengeful spirit who travels through a video tape.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 3120 Average listal rating (2086 ratings) 5.8 IMDB Rating 6.5

Another controversial film. It is loved by the mainstream, but is not universally praised by Horror fans. I for one thought that it's approach was refreshing, and the implication of a supernatural presence rather than actually seeing it reminded me of the original The Haunting.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 1277 Average listal rating (722 ratings) 7.2 IMDB Rating 7.2
Audition (2000)

There is a lot of hype surrounding Audition. It is often cited as being one of the most disturbing films in existence. I strongly disagree with this position and struggle to understand why it has this reputation. Yes, it has some intense scenes of violence, but there are far more extreme horror films out there. That being said, I think it's a good solid Horror film, which is why it has a place on this list.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 4155 Average listal rating (2720 ratings) 7.4 IMDB Rating 7.6

The film depicts the archetypal narcissistic psychopath.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 704 Average listal rating (436 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 6.8

A campy Gothic Horror werewolf film about two weird sisters who have an encounter with a lycanthrope in the woods. One is bitten and begins slowly transforming which simultaneously happens with her sexual awakening.

Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 195 Average listal rating (125 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.2
Dagon (2001)

Based on HP Lovecraft's "Shadow over Innsmouth". Not critically acclaimed or anything, but I think it's a good interpretation of Lovecraft. The human/sea creature hybrid designs were interesting.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 432 Average listal rating (252 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.7
Dark Water (2002)

Another in the vengeful spirit cycle. This film has a very melancholic undertone and the storyline is tragic.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 485 Average listal rating (348 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.8
Dog Soldiers (2002)

A violent modern take on the werewolf subgenre. The werewolf designs reminded me of the representation of werewolves in fairy tales.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 190 Average listal rating (73 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 6.3
In My Skin (2002)

Considered part of the New French Extremity, Dans Ma Peau deals with extreme self mutilation. The film's director and writer, Marina De Van plays the main character. She accidently cuts her leg at a party and shortly after she begins to severely mutilate her own body. It's a very interesting film and unique take on the genre.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 163 Average listal rating (117 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 6.6
Dead End (2003)

A funny and effective ghost film about a family travelling on a never-ending road and are gradually killed off by something unknown. Interesting twist at the end.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 870 Average listal rating (599 ratings) 5.9 IMDB Rating 6.1

Absolutely hated by critics and many horror fans, House of 1000 Corpses is Rob Zombies first horror film. I see the film as a great homage to old horror, and it encompasses so many sub-genres. I love its absurdity and surrealism.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 635 Average listal rating (387 ratings) 6.5 IMDB Rating 6.7

One of the most famous films in the Japanese vengeful spirit sub-genre. The spirits of a cursed house haunt people who come into contact with it, and they may inadvertently pass the curse on to others. It's essentially a collection of short stories about people who are afflicted by these spirits. The use of facial expressions and strange bodily movements help make this an effective ghost film.
Cyneliam's rating:
People who added this item 155 Average listal rating (81 ratings) 6.8 IMDB Rating 6.7

A Chinese film about practicing cannibalism in order to preserve youth.
