Top 20 TV Villains

Sort by: Showing 20 items
Rating: List Type:

From "True Detective". One of the creepiest villains not only from tv but in any piece of art in a long time. He kills women and children all because he thinks it will gain him some sort of glory and blessing. His killings were committed for years and he almost got away with it. He was only on screen for a limited of time but he leaves such a lasting impression and his presence is felt throughout the whole season.

From "Deadwood". In season 1 it appears as if Al is the villain and one who you will hate. But then Cy Tolliver comes along and you find a more despicable monster to hate. Somehow though, Hearst arrives into town and becomes the biggest monster of them all that even those two were afraid. He was completely evil with no redeeming qualities. Everyone hated him but he was so powerful no one could stop him. He truly represents the worst in our society.

From "Hannibal". I love Sir Anthony Hopkins. His performance in The Silence of the Lambs is iconic for a reason. But there's something about Mikkelsen's performance that is so captivating. He's charming and you see why no one would expect him to be a serial killer and cannibal. But then the psycho comes out, and he's terrifying. I loved too how this character was even injected with a little humor.

From "The X-Files". The most mysterious villain on this list. As soon as he appeared on screen, you knew he was up to no good but you couldn't help but want to see more of him. His motivations were unclear but he was behind something and with just one look, it sent shivers down your spine. Some viewers didn't find him as interesting as the series went on, but I always loved the menace and trouble he brought till the end.

From "Hannibal". My favorite version of The Tooth Fairy. Richard Armitage has the physical presence for this part. But it's the little touches of sympathy he adds to this, that truly make it stand out. You understand how this monster was created but you're always reminded that he is still selfish and evil with all the families he kills. He does all this so he can transform and there are times where he seems more monster than man.

From "The Wire". Marlo is just a straight up sociopath. The other criminals on the streets had at least a shred of charm. He just has dead eyes that lead to a dead soul. Kills someone when he feels he has been slightly insulted. Profits off of the addictions of others. And will order the death of children. He infects everything he touches. Jaime Hector played him to perfection as even the most hardened people on the streets feared him.

From "Orange is the New Black". Also known as Vee. When Vee came into this show, she really shook things up. She is like every classic con-man but still is very charismatic. But underneath that is someone who only cares about themselves. She creates a very cult like group among her little gang and knows how to manipulate people. All the inmates were smart to watch out for her.

From "Boardwalk Empire". Don't so much as look at him wrong or say "hi" to him in the wrong way. He is one crazy son of a bitch who takes the slightest insult as a massive gut punch to his ego. Violent and one of the best insult comics around. Nucky met his match with Gyp as he did what it takes to stay on top and right when he feels he has been wronged.

From "Twin Peaks". The stuff nightmares are made out of. Just plain evil that only wants to inflict suffering on the world. It helps that Bob looks scary as hell too. Bob also feels unstoppable which add to his evil. Even the "good" people on this show feel helpless with him around.

From "Lost". The moment he came on screen, people knew that there was something up with this guy. The show revealed he was the leader of the infamous and mysterious Others and an amazing character was born. Ben is always scheming. He's always spinning something whether he is talking or dead silent. It's in those moments of silence that he is probably at his most terrifying. That stare seems to see right into your soul. Even though he was human, he at times felt like another monster on the island. There was a little bit of good in him but that was outweighed against the numerous deaths he caused on the show. Michael Emerson was born to play this character and he made for one of the most complex villains on this list.

From "Legion". There are many versions of The Shadow King: The Yellow Demon, Lenny, The Angriest Boy, etc. All of them great but it's Farouk himself who rules the show. Not since Heath Ledger's Joker has a comic book villain been so memorable and awesome. He's so damn cool and suave that you get why people would follow him. Farouk has lived for thousands of years so he understands how to get what he wants. His presence is felt even when he isn't on screen. Negahban has perfected the villain smile and sometimes all it takes is one look and you know he is up to no good. His powers make him one of the most powerful mutants in the world and no one stands a chance against him when you get on his bad side.

From "The Wire". The second in command of a street gang who has big ambitions. Stringer likes to model his gang like a business and sees himself like a business man. To do this he is willing to kill whoever gets in his way.

From "The Sopranos". She may not have actually killed anyone on the show but she none the less is the cause of a lot of misery. A horrible mother and just an all around mean person. She was abusive to her children and to anyone that even showed her the tiniest bit of attention. Also, conspiring to murder her son certainly doesn't help.

From "Fargo". I could listen to Mike Milligan talk all day. He knows how to command the conversation and everyone's attention. He almost feels like an alien who has landed on Earth in the Midwest and is fascinated by everything. He's silver tongued and will captivate you. Dealing with the racism of the crime syndicate also kind of makes you root for him a little bit too. Milligan can charm the pants off of anyone. Right after that though, he'll probably kill you.

From "Dexter". On the outside, Arthur Mitchell appears to be a church going family man. But behind the man was a serial killer who had been doing it for over thirty years. He had a method to his killings that offered a peek inside his mind and childhood. Dexter Morgan brought out the worse in him and he truly was a match for Dexter. His final act also left such a lasting impression on the show his presence was still felt even when he left.

From "Justified". Robert Quarles when he first arrived in Harlan appeared to be a clean cut dapper man. But as the season progressed and he turned to Oxy, he became the truly insane, unpredictable, and evil man he was. But man was he fun to watch! He had a gun hidden in his sleeve and with a flick of his wrist could shoot you dead. This made every scene he appeared in tense as you never were sure when he would use it.

From "Fargo". Much like Anton Chigurh, Malvo doesn't even feel human but more chaos personified. He appears to want to cause nothing but destruction and death. Even in small interactions he has, he wants to do nothing but cause misery and play with people like it's a game.

From "Breaking Bad". Gus Fring appeared to be a kind and calm fast food restaurant owner who was a pillar of his community. But behind closed doors he was a ruthless Meth distributor. One look from this man could send anyone to the grave. He would do what it takes to stay on top even going as far as to threaten and kill children. He could do this and then on the very next day go to work with a smile on his face.

From "Justified". The head of The Bennett clan crime family after her husband died, she is ruthless and does what it takes to keep her family on top. She may look like a kind grandma but she is scarier and more conniving than most of the criminals in Harlan. And be careful when she makes you her famous "apple pie"!

From "Fargo". Hands down one of the most vile and grossest villains I have ever seen. And I don't just mean his teeth. Varga is just plain evil incarnate and he is terrifying in every scene he is in. He's like a parasite, he just sucks all the goodness out of anybody and anywhere. But somehow you also can't help but be captivated every time he is on screen, which a lot of that is due to David Thewlis playing him wonderfully. Varga has no redeemable qualities and represents everything wrong with the world.

These are in my opinion the best tv villains of all time. I chose 20 so there would be a greater variety of evil. There are some spoilers here so beware.
