While this wasn't immediately hailed as usual Coen outings, I feel this will be more loved for years to come. I love how they make fun of old Hollywood while also showing a lot of affection for it. The cast even in small, supporting parts were all great but Alden Ehrenreich stole the show for me. As the sweet but somewhat dimwitted actor he provides a lot of the laughs and heart of the movie. On top of all that, it has one of the best dance sequences I have seen in awhile.

A low key thriller anchored by the always captivating Bryan Cranston. His performance as an undercover agent where his real life blurs with his undercover life is very interesting and tense to watch. The supporting cast as well are great with Diane Kruger and John Leguizamo being favorites of mine. The soundtrack as well was excellent. With a smart script, this one was one of the more underrated movies of 2016.

Just an all around feel good movie that should put a smile on your face as you are watching it. Of course as with any movie about music, the music should be good and the soundtrack to this was stuck in my head for days. Not a single weak link in the cast and I found them all to be charming. This was another underrated one of 2016 and I hope more people check it out.

Anthony Weiner seriously had high hopes to be the next big thing in politics. But he ruined it with an odd sexting scandal and subsequent lying about it. After staying out of the public eye for awhile, he eyes a mayoral run and seriously could have won. But once again, he screws it up but this time possibly ruins his marriage. The documentary is fascinating but so hard to watch sometimes, particularly any scene involving Huma Abedin who you will sympathize with. It's cliche phrase to say but this truly is like watching a trainwreck.

A spiritual sequel to Dazen and Confused, this one is just as good as the first. It perfectly captures the feeling of just hanging out with friends and goofing off. But it also subtly shows the fear of approaching adulthood and fear of losing the spark of energy you have when you are young. Everyone is charming in this but Glen Powell and Tyler Hoechlin will go on to have amazing careers after this.

A love letter to classic musicals, it lived up to the hype that everyone praised it for. After the fantastic Whiplash, Damien Chazelle had a lot to live up to and this was no sophomore slump. This was directed beautifully and had some of the best looking shots this year. The opening sequence in this as well is one of the best directed scenes I have seen in a long time. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both give award worthy performances and their singing suits the film with Stone being a stand out. The songs are catchy, the dancing is nice, and it has a wonderful ending. In an increasing cynical society it's also nice to watch something that is ultimately optimistic.

One of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. It's best to go into it without knowing much. All you need to know it is about a tickling fetish. But it grows into something more and it is equally hilarious and scary. Haven't felt this many emotions watching a doc since The Imposter. Usually I have problems when a documentary filmmaker inserts themselves into the narrative, but it really works for this one and David Farrier is charming and never gets in the way of the story.

This is probably a movie that I will watch multiple times and never get tired of. It's inspiring and heart warming while also being important in addressing these amazing overlooked black women. The three leads in this are all wonderful with Janelle Monae being a favorite who should get a Supporting Actress Oscar. But both Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer give charming performances as well and I loved spending time with them all. This is just an all around good movie that honors these women.

Park Chan-wook is one of my favorite directors of all time as Oldboy is one of the most perfect movies ever made. With this one, he has made another piece of art that shows you the power of film. An excellent thriller that builds up the tension to the perfect moment to let go of it. Both Kim Min-hee and Kim Tae-ri will keep you glued to the screen and wonder what will happen next. And of course as with any of Park's work, sometimes you just want to stop and stare at the screen. This is another one that is best going in not knowing much about it.

This features two of my favorite performances of the year. Denzel Washington brings his nature charm to a role that requires him to not be the usual nice guy he plays. He is able to be bitter, angry, and just a general asshole without you ever losing interest in him. Viola Davis is tasked with so many emotions and she absolutely nails it. There is one scene that left me absolutely glued to the screen and she SHOULD win the Best Lead Actress at the Oscars. The film speaks on so many things and with Denzel at the helm, it becomes one of the best films of the year.

Blue Ruin was not only one of the best films of 2014 but also one of the best films I have seen in awhile. With this movie now, Jeremy Saulnier becomes of my favorite new directors and I am excited to see what else he has to offer. This invokes the movies of the 70s directed by John Carpenter. Instead of monsters though it's Neo Nazis and you feel ever fear this band feels as they look for a way to get out. No one feels safe and it features some of the nastiest kills in a long time. Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and Macon Blair take the already great script and direction and make it a classic.

Laika Studios does it again! Another beautiful stop motion movie that everyone should enjoy. The work that goes into these is evident on screen and all that hard work plays off. The creations in this were some of the most beautiful ones in 2016 and it makes the strongest case for why there should be more stop motion movies. The cast as well provide excellent voice work giving life to complex characters. Everyone needs to support this studio so we can get more movies like this.

Martin Scorsese proves once again why he is one of the best of all time. After watching this, I was left speechless. It's almost unbearable to watch as you feel the pain and suffering these people feel. It's an absolute amazing exploration of faith, doubt, and what it means to do the right thing. Liam Neeson, Adam Driver, and Andrew Garfield broke me with their fantastic work as these feel like real people. This isn't a film I necessarily immediately want to watch but it's one that I will revisit again and marvel at the work of filmmakers.

I didn't know what to expect with this so when it turned out to be not only hilarious but a surprising exploration of prejudice and how stereotypes affect people. On top of that, it just has a very cool story and mystery that makes you care about the outcome. Along with that, the animation is stunning and the voice cast make you love the characters. This film surprised me the most this year and I look for it to be considered a classic for years to come.

Prisoners, Sicario, and now this. Denis Villeneuve can do no wrong now. As with most of his films, this captures a perfect atmosphere and is shot like someone who has been doing this forever. Amy Adams once again shows why she is one of the best working actors today and she is supported by some great supporting actors. More importantly though, this movie is important and vital as ever. It's not just about aliens but communication, human connections, and like any great story: love. That might sound cheesy but it works and like any great sci-fi it handles its themes well and makes you ponder a lot about the world.

I am a sucker for a good noir detective story and this feels every need of that. It has a surreal atmosphere and a compelling mystery at the center that any good noir should have. But as with any story, the characters will make you love it. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe have wonderful chemistry together with Gosling showing his comedic skills while still balancing the drama very well. Though it is probably the discovery of Angourie Rice that is one of the greatest achievements of this. Along with the great cast and fun thrill of a classic buddy comedy, Shane Black continues to show why he is the best.

After watching this, this one stayed in my mind for days and I couldn't stop thinking about it. This invokes the films of the 70s and even classic Westerns giving this a timeless feel while also commenting on the modern era. It helps that Taylor Sheridan wrote the best screenplay this year and David Mackenzie is a master at what he does. Mackenzie also gets award worthy performances out of everyone in the cast, with even a small scene involving an angry waitress being a highlight this year. This is tense, emotional, and even funny. This is one I will be watching again and again.

Moana feels like classic Disney while also bringing a lot of great new things to the table. Moana is a great role model for all and is just an all around great hero. A lot of times in an animated musical there usually is at least one weak song but in this one, there isn't a single one. I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since I saw this one. Even though all the songs are great Where You Are, You're Welcome, and Shiny might be my favorites. The voice cast all bring amazing work with being charming and fun to watch. Animation as well is another thing of beauty and I am hoping for an Oscar win.

There are some films that transcend just being a film and become an experience. That is the best way to describe this movie: an experience. It's an experience to watch as you follow this person and their life wondering what will happen next. Barry Jenkins should win Best Director as he not only shoots some of the most stunning shots this year but emotionally captivates you that time passes by. Jenkins also gets some of the best performances this year from Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, and Janelle Monae that anyone in the cast could win an Oscar. All the actors playing Chiron are perfectly cast and give effortless performances. I can't think of a single flaw in this and I expect this will be a classic for years to come.

With American Crime Story and now this, I never would have guessed that OJ Simpson would be at the center of two of my favorite things this year. I think this is one of the most important documentaries today. This isn't just about OJ, although the exploration of him and the crime is compelling and fascinating, this is about something more. This film explores just why OJ was found innocent and why it is more complicated and complex than a lot of people think. It's about racism, sexism, police brutality, domestic violence, systems that continuously fail people, fame, etc. Ezra Edelman never judges anyone (except for Fuhrman and OJ and rightfully so) but just presents them as complex. I came out of this like with the tv series, thinking about it for days and opening tons of conversations that need to be further explored. This is a long documentary but it is totally worth it and one of the most important films of the 21st century.

The Witch and Green Room did not have a US release on VOD and theaters till 2016 so I consider them 2016 releases.

This might be one of the hardest film lists I ever had to come up with being that there were so many good movies this year.

Honorable Mentions: The Conjuring 2, The Witch, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Manchester By the Sea, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
