A very cool concept that is a great throwback to retro 80s horror films. It's one you should go in blind as discovering what exactly is going on is so much fun. David Robert Mitchell has a great future ahead of him as he knows how to make you feel uneasy and scared without showing much. Maika Monroe too is going to be someone to watch out for as she is an actress that holds your attention.

The Martian (2015)

A sci-fi film we need to inspire future generations to get into science and help better the world. This was also surprisingly funny and I had a great time with the whole cast. Matt Damon proves he can carry a film all on his own. But the rest including Chiwetel Ejifor and Jessica Chastain show why they make any film instantly better. Also a great inspiring crowd pleaser that everyone can enjoy.

Cary Fukunaga with this and True Detective season 1 shows he is a director that is getting the rightfully deserved praise. A hard film to watch but one that needs to be seen. Idris Elba is commanding and terrifying and deserves a Supporting Actor nomination. But the biggest surprise was Abraham Attah's lead performance as Agu. It is amazing someone so young can give such an unforgettable performance. I look forward to more from him and more films from Fukunaga.

One of the best musical biopics in a while. It presents the story and life in an interesting way while paying respect to the artist. Paul Dano was fantastic and my favorite in the film. I am not a huge fan of The Beach Boys but this made me appreciate them more.

Noah Baumbach makes great films and this one shows why. It's very funny and I had a lot of fun with this one. Cast was great especially Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke. It's shame the Academy doesn't recognize comedies because this one deserves love too.

This shows you how many good films came out in 2015 that this is only number 16 on the list. I absolutely loved Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara together in this. It was beautiful to look at and Todd Haynes is definitely deserving of praise. I enjoyed this and hope everyone else did too.

One of those indies that takes off and gets the love it deserves. Olivia Cooke and Thomas Mann show they are some of the best young actors today but this film should be commended for discovering RJ Cyler. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon can make the jump from tv to film as this is not only funny but also poignant. This movie made me cry both happy and sad tears. You will especially like it if you are a film lover.

Not since The Master, has a lead performance felt so raw and captivating. This film should get Christopher Abbott more work and recognition as he completely disappears into this character. It is hard to watch at times because it feels like you are watching a real person. This came out of nowhere and was one of the best finds for me this year.

The Revenant (2015)

If there is one film that will give Leo the Oscar, it will probably be this one. An intense and brutal fight through nature it kept me glued to the screen the whole time. This film had beautiful cinematography and another wonderful directing job from Inarritu. Loved every minute of this.

A hilarious coming of age film it also was one of the best coming of age films I have seen in a long time. A non-judgmental film that also feels honest. It is hard to single out one performance as there is not a single weak link among the cast. This is an indie that hasn't been talked about much but everyone should watch it and support one of the best surprises of the year.

This film was just so much fun and had so many memorable characters that are already favorites among a new generation of fans. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac were all wonderful additions to this saga as great heroes and a great new villain. The returning actors from the old saga were so great to see back on the screen. JJ Abrams has made a film that a nostalgic fan can love while still getting new fans.

I'm usually not into anime but this was such a beautiful film that it is hard to ignore. A very emotionally affecting film it shows why animated films should be respected. I don't want to ruin anything about this film because it feels like a journey you need to discover on your own. Just go watch it and prepare to feel every emotion in the world.

A cynical, funny, and angry movie about the Recession and housing market crash. Adam McKay gave this film energy and made a complex and complicated subject fun to watch. The cast was great but it was Steve Carell and Christian Bale who definitely hold your interest the most. I came out of this understanding more and hoping things change. That shows you the power a film can have.

I'm surprised this wasn't a bigger hit. It had a fantastic script like all of Sorkin's screenplays. Danny Boyle's direction was one of the best of the year. Michael Fassbender gave a performance of a complicated brilliant man along with memorable performances from Kate Winslet and Michael Stulhbarg. This should have been a hit but it at least is getting recognized with awards.

This one has been slipping under the radar but it was one of the best of 2015. It has the feeling of a Paul Thomas Anderson film inspired by a Coen brother film. It's a surreal and mysterious film but that is what made it so great. Leland Orser was great but it was Mary Elizabeth Winstead who was the stand out. Everything about her performance was perfect and it was the best of her career so far. This too had one of the best endings I have seen in a long time.

This film shows why Denis Villeneuve is one of the best directors working today. A tense thriller showing the drug war and how it affects us all in Mexico and the USA. Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro should get nominations for their performances as opposite ways to fight this war. The score for this film was excellent as well and shouldn't be forgotten.

Creed (2015)

Rocky is one of my favorite movies of all time and I am so thrilled a whole new generation will get to experience a new boxing series. Ryan Coogler showed how you can take some formulaic elements and make them exciting and thrilling to watch. One of the most inspirational films this year, it also will make you feel good. Jordan, Stallone, and Thompson all gave great performances with Stallone giving one of the best of his career. Also, had some of the best music this year.

One of Pixar's best. A very inventive, beautiful, original, and fun film about growing up and what goes on in our minds. It was hilarious and sweet and it was one of the most emotional movies in 2015. I've watched it multiple times and love everything about it.

Not only was this the best blockbuster this year, but one of the best blockbusters in a long time. George Miller should be recognized by the Academy for making this masterpiece. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were badass action heroes and it had a story that made you care about the action.

A film that speaks to a lot that is going on in the world now, this was one of Tarantino's best. This had the best ensemble of the year with Jackson, Goggins, and Leigh giving award worthy performances. It was tense and the most fun I had at the movies this year. Also one of the best westerns I have seen in awhile.

Faults, When Marnie Was There, Love & Mercy, and It Follows did not have a US release on VOD and theaters till 2015 so I consider them 2015 releases.

Honorable Mentions: Ex Machina, Spotlight, Amy, The Peanuts Movie, and Straight Outta Compton.
