Notes: Once again, even though the critics for this movie were rather abysmal, I donāt think it was so bad. Indeed, in my opinion, this follow-up was neither better or worse than its predecessor and, at least, you have to admit that Zack Snyder is actually pretty consistent. Above all, what amazed me the most was how Snyder managed to get 4 hrs of running time from this material? Seriously, I donāt think it was really so bad, it was more that it felt so empty somehow. In this case, this village and these warriors had 5 days before the enemy would attack them and, out of these 5 days (which was ridiculously low), they took like 2 or 3 days to harvest wheat but it was rather pathetic. I mean, the whole idea was that the harvest would supposedly protect them but it was certainly not convincing. Of course, at some point, Atticus Noble gave the order to blast this whole village regardless of the harvest making their whole plan completely meaningless. In a similar fashion, sure, in āSeven Samuraiā, a handful of skilled warriors could win against an army of bandits, but, in this case, they were facing an intergalactic super power would could blast them from out of space so Iām afraid the whole concept eventually didnāt work from the very beginning. At least, I think that Sofia Boutella was actually better but I think it was mostly because she had so very little dialogues this time around (like everyone else actually). Eventually, the funniest thing is that they gave an open ending for a possible sequel but, to be honest, I wish that Snyder would drop this, even if it did sound quite promising at first.

Irish Wish (2024)

Notes: To be honest, it was not really good, in fact, it was even pretty weak. First of all, I have to admit that I do have actually a weak spot for romantic-comedies. Unfortunately, like most movies in this genre, they went for some kind of moronic gimmick so Iām afraid the damned thing was pretty much doomed to fail from the start. Furthermore, sure, Ireland did look quite gorgeous in this movie but there was also something rather fake about this postcard look though. And, yet, I thought it was pretty cool to see Lohan making a come-back after almost 20 years. Furthermore, even though the story was rather lame and her character was barely interesting, I thought she was quite charismatic though. Itās too bad that the supporting characters were not entertaining whatsoever and I guess it was a strategy to make sure that none of them could upstage Lohan in any way. Sure, this come-back (which actually started a few years before with āFalling for Christmasā but I didnāt see it yet) never came near the level of āIron Manā for Robert Downey Jr. or āThe Wrestlerā for Mickey Rourke. However, at least, it was nice to see her finally in a good shape after all these years and I hope she will keep this up and maybe even tackle some more challenging work in the future (she probably wonāt though).

Lift (2024)

Notes: I do have a weak spot for heist movies but, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how lame this movie actually turned out to be, especially since it was directed by the guy who gave us āThe Italian Jobā. Iām not a huge fan of this remake but I have to admit that it was a decent flick and it was, back then, a commercial success. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, right from the start, I was just so bored and one of the reasons was the fact that everything looked so fake. It reminded me of āThiefā, one of my favorite movies in the genre. Back then, they used an actual vault and the actual tools to break in which were supplied by real-life thieves who served as technical consultants on this film. Anyway, the damned thing was so raw and so fascinating to behold but, in this case, they kept using some supposedly āhigh-techā gadgets which all looked rather pathetic. It has also been a while since I have seen a movie with such ugly CGI. Another issue was the fact that all the characters were just terribly flat. I mean, I have nothing against Kevin Hart, the guy can be actually pretty funny, but he was just never convincing as some kind of mastermind thief. At least, Gugu Mbatha-Raw was, as usual, really lovely and she did what she could with this material but itās a shame than such a talented actress keeps wasting her time with such underwhelming Netflix features (see also āThe Cloverfield Paradoxā).

Trigger Warning (2024)

Notes: To be honest, it wasnāt the worst movie I have seen recently released by Netflix (I have to admit that I have watched a lot of garbage lately) but the main thing that bothered me was that the fact the whole thing felt so empty. Indeed, for a good while, in fact, for almost the whole duration, I was wondering what the damned thing was supposed to be about. Eventually, it wasnāt a great story at all and the plot turned out to be really paper thin. Concerning Alba, it turned tout that she had to basically carry the whole thing on her shoulders. In fact, none of the other characters was developed whatsoever but there is a fair chance that it was done on purpose just to make sure that nobody could upstage her in any way. The most amazing thing about this actress is that, 20 years later, she still looks so gorgeous but, even though her character was pretty badass and had some potential, Iām afraid she wasnāt really convincing though. Is there anyway that this movie could have worked at all? I do believe that a bad director can mess up a great story and a great director can turn a lame story into a great movie. In this case, they could have gone for a really raw and/or violent approach or the main character could have been more complex but this director really did nothing at all with this material which was already not interesting in the first place.

Despicable Me 4 (2024)

Notes: As expected, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing though. Seriously, I pretty much phased out during the last 30 mins and barely followed what was going on anymore but Iām pretty sure I didnāt miss much. At least, I have to admit that the Minions jokes were still pretty good (it actually reminds that I still havenāt watched āMinions: The Rise of Gruā but I guess Iāll check it out at some point, even if it will probably be nothing great whatsoever). Indeed, even though some people might find them annoying, I think they are still pretty funny. However, Iām afraid that pretty much nothing else really worked in this movie and, in my opinion, the main issue was that the damned thing was just too random. Indeed, by now, so many characters are involved in this franchise (Gru, his wife, his brother, his mother, his adopted children, his new-born baby, his minionsā¦) and, instead of having some kind of plot, they just switch every 5 mins to a different character with each their own (usually really underwhelming) sub-plot. Itās too bad because the idea of Gru going to his high-school was not really original but it had some potential. However, as mentioned before, this story was basically lost into a multitude of lame sub-plots.

Unfrosted (2024)

Notes: I have noticed that this movie was pretty much a critical flop when it was released but, since Iām a huge fan of Jerry Seinfeld and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, Iām afraid I would have to agree with the critics on this one. Indeed, even though it was pretty neat to finally see Seinfeld in a movie, even directing one for the very first time, Iām afraid that the damned thing was just not good though. Sure, from the very beginning, you might wonder if making a movie about the creation of the Pop-Tarts was such a great idea but, on the other hand, David Fincher did manage to deliver a modern classic about Facebook. Eventually, I can imagine that Seinfeld could deliver a pretty good joke about Pop-Tarts during his stand-ups but there is a big difference between having fun about it for maybe 5 mins and delivering an actual full-length feature about this subject. Iām not saying that it was impossible but the fact that Seinfeld never directed another movie before probably didn't help. Anyway, there is no doubt that he didnāt pull it off, thatās for sure. Indeed, as mentioned before, the story was hardly interesting from the start but, to make things worse, the characters were not much better in spite the solid cast involved. Concerning the cast, the best of the bunch was probably Hugh Grant but even his character was not exactly hilarious though. However, the worst thing was probably the fact that most of the jokes were barely amusing at all

The Watchers (2024)

Notes: I was willing to give Ishana Shyamalan the benefit of the doubt since she was only 26 years old and since it was her directorial debut but, Iām sorry, the damned thing was just not good. Eventually, like anyone else, I was wondering what M. Night Shyamalanās daughter would do but, unfortunately, instead of doing her own thing, she basically delivered a typical M. Night Shyamalan half-baked horror feature. Like with her father, sure, the whole thing didnāt look bad and there was a decent creepy mood but, to be honest, pretty much nothing else did work though. Above all, what bothered me the most were the huge plot-holes constantly showing up. I mean, right from the start, why was the action taking place in Ireland? Why was the main character an American? Only because Fanning was a bankable actor? How was this whole bunker/coop/whatever supposed to make any sense? Who came up with these rules? None of the 4 characters were properly developed either so I had a hard time to care about what they were going through. It was also quite laughable how the remaining characters went back to civilization as if nothing happened to them. Seriously, how her twin sister reacted completely unfazed by her story was rather priceless. Finally, through the whole duration, I was wondering if she would go for some twist which has been such an enduring and tedious trademark in her fatherās work and, of course, she did. However, this twist was just too predictable so it barely had any impact whatsoever.

Borderlands (2024)

Notes: I have noticed that this movie was a huge critical flop when it was released but, to be honest, it turned out to be rather hard to judge this movie for me after all. First of all, there was the fact that, after Eli Roth delivered a hard R-rated movie as it was supposed to be from the start, the studio spent more than a year completely retooling the damned thing to get a PG-13 rating which basically ruined the damned thing. The other issue was that, last weekend, I was just moving in into my new apartment and, even though I saw this movie in the afternoon, I was actually exhausted and started to really doze off during the 2nd half. Anyway, even though I have to admit that most of the story was indeed seriously derivative, it was just so cool to see Cate Blanchett, at 55 years old, playing some badass space gunslinger and, of course, she completely nailed it. Claptrap, the robot voiced by Jack Black, was also quite entertaining. Unfortunately, all the other characters involved were rather half-baked and barely entertaining. Especially for Kevin Hart, after the even more underwhelming āLiftā, it was the 2nd movie I have seen this year during which he tried to tackle something really different than his usual comedies and completely failed (at least, āJumanji: Welcome to the Jungleā did work though). My rating was probably too generous here but I donāt think I will watch the damned thing again at some point just to make sure, my love for Cate Blanchett is so strong, I think you should watch anything with her, even if it might actually be one of the worst movies of the year.

Madame Web (2024)

Notes: After hearing so many bad things about this movie, I seriously lowered my expectations but I still ended up watching the damned thing in the movie theater. Anyway, probably because I was expecting something so awful but I donāt think it was so bad after all. Sure, it was nothing amazing and it did feel indeed rather half-baked but I thought the end-result was harmless and there were even a couple of decent ideas. I mean, it was directed by a woman with a cast of interesting actresses (Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Emma Roberts) and I liked how all these characters were connected together. Unfortunately, even though Tahar Rahim is a fine actor, his bad guy was just so underwhelming. Basically, he was some kind of villainous version of Spider-Man shooting some poison instead of webs. Anyway, the guy was pretty lame. Furthermore, it was pretty obvious that they struggled with the script (according to Dakota Johnson, the end-result had actually pretty much nothing to do anymore with the script she signed on to make). I mean, you get to see the main character driving around, she drops the girls into some random woods so she can go back to New York just to read some journal and goes back again to these woods and all this with the same stolen cab. Then, after this very clunky sequence, she then dumped then again so she could make some trip to Peru which was just weird. The ending was also hardly convincing. Indeed, it is not as if all these girls were orphans so it didnāt make sense that Cassandra Webb would become their foster somehow.

Damsel (2024)

Notes: To be honest, I think the poster pretty much spoiled the damned thing. Indeed, you get to see the young actress looking pretty badass with a sword so you know from the start that she will fight some dragon from the very beginning but, seriously, it took forever to get there. It was also another issue, the fact that they could have easily removed 30 mins of running time. I mean, for crying out loud, the poor girl actually did manage to get out off this cave at some point and, yet, they did send her back almost right away so she could save her baby sister which was, narratively speaking, pretty shabby. And yet, I always had a weak spot for minimalistic features and 2/3 of the duration was basically about Brown all alone in some cave with some massive dragon chasing her and this part was actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, she is really charismatic and the fact that she is only 20 years old was also appreciated as she was therefore pretty much the same age of her character instead of being 10 years older which is so often the case. Unfortunately, this movie didnāt have much else to offer. Indeed, the introduction, even if it did look fine, was such a bore and, to make things worse, it did feel rather unnecessary. The whole point was to see a princess fighting a dragon instead of getting rescued but nobody really cared about why she actually got there. Anyway, I think I was rather generous with my rating here.
