"Remember, shithead! Keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times!"
This is one of Renny Harlin's few decent movies and that is mostly thanks to Stallone and the over-the-top performance from John Lithgow. I also really like the mountain setting of the movie. That is something that is rarely seen in action movies. But apart from that this really isn't anything special. It lacks a lot of fun and good one-liners, and as great as Lithgow is, he's not really that much of a threat to Stallone. Especially during their fist fight. That was cringe worthy to watch. I would say this is for Stallone fans only.
"Next time, I'll deflate all your balls, friend."
Stallone is the only one of the classic action heroes that still managed to create a new franchise these days. Sure, it was with a lot of help from a lot of other action stars, but he is the man behind it all. I think he might have had a little too much on his plate while making this as star, writer, and director, but he still pulled it off. This movie had a lot of great action sequences from a lot of your favorite heroes, and the last one at the villa was pretty damn epic. The only problem is that they decided to use horrible CG effects instead of practical effects. The blood in this film looks like it was made on MS paint by a blind dog. It's awful. Especially the effect used for Eric Robert's death scene. I could not believe my eyes the first time i saw that in the theaters. The movie also feels like a bit of a cheat when it promises you a movie filled with this huge group of action heroes, but it's mostly just Stallone and Statham for the most of it. But looking away from that this is still a pretty damn fun movie.
"To beat me, he will have to kill me."
This is by far the cheesiest, but the most fun Rocky movie. The movie is pretty much just montages and boxing matches. Who could have imaged that the realistic and grounded boxing drama Rocky would eventually have a sequel with super soldier Russian boxers, giant James Brown musical numbers, robots, mountain training montages, and Rocky personally ending the cold war. It's so ridicules you just can't help but love it. This is also the first movie for Dolph Lundgren as the great Ivan Drago. One of the greatest movie villains of all time. No one else could have played that part. This is just a fun time at the movies.
"Rambo's a pussy."
Who can not love the buddy cop team up of Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell? It's brilliant. And they pulled it off too with a great action movie. It's a shame they never made any sequels to this one because this is one of those movie i really think could have been turned in to a fantastic action franchise.
"When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing."
This was the first Rambo movie that actually felt like a true sequel to First Blood. It was a brutal and bleak movie that was no fun at all. This is not a date movie to say the least. Rambo 2 and 3 felt like cartoons in comparison. First Blood and this feels like a completely different, and much better franchise that Rambo 2 and 3. And this is the kind of effects The Expendables movies should have used. Great practical effects all around. If the used any CG here it was totally unnoticeable. And the final shootout was one of the most brutal and epic ones i have ever seen on film.
"You're the disease, and I'm the cure."
This was by far my favorite Stallone movie as a kid. I watched my VHS copy of it to death. It is so gloriously cheesy and hilariously so-bad-it's-good i can't help but love it. Cobra Cobretti is definitely Stallone's coolest movie character to date. His mirror aviators, the matchstick in his mouth, and his personal pearl handled Colt .45. No one is cooler than Cobra. This also has Brian Thompson as one of the craziest movie villains ever. He also get's one of the greatest death scenes ever. This is a movie that all fans of 80's action movie has too see.
"You're gonna regret this the rest of your life... both seconds of it."
How can you go wrong with Sylvester Stallone vs Wesley Snipes? You can't. And this is proof of that. This is an amazingly cheesy and great action film. It also has one of the funniest future visions i have ever seen on film. A future with no violence ever, all the music are old commercial jingles, you wipe your butt with three seashells somehow, and every single restaurant is a Pizza Hut. And that isn't even half of all the crazy stuff they came up with here. Wesley Snipes also gives his greatest performance ever here. Simon Phoenix is one of my favorite movie villains ever. Sandra Bullock is also in this film and she is as charming and adorable as ever. This is definitely one of those movies i can watch over and over again and never get tired of. A true action classic.
The Expendables 2 (2012)
"You wanna man up? I'll man you up."
This took everything great about The Expendables and cranked it up by a hundred. This was pretty much just a fun action joy ride from beginning to end. And unlike the first one most of the team is actually in the entire film. This movie also gave us a memorable villain finally with Jean-Claude Van Damme as the brilliantly named Jean Vilain. I have not seen Van Damme have this much fun with a role in many years. He truly was the MVP of this film. This movie also gave Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis so much more to do. In the first one they all just talked together in a church. That was so fucking disappointing. But here they get to kick some ass. That final showdown at the airport was an action fans wet dream come true. They even dug up Chuck Norris again to join in. The only bad thing i can think of is that Jet Li exits the movie after about 15 minutes and is never seen again. But at least he got in a pretty awesome fight scene before that. This really is one of the best pure action movies of the last 10 years or so and obligatory viewing for any fan of old school action.
"Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe."
This is the movie that first put Stallone on the map as a legitimate action hero. Sure, he had done action movies before, but nothing as groundbreaking and great as this. A lot of people think this is just as bad as the other Rambo movie with Stallone just going around shirtless while killing foreigners left and right. But this is far from that. This is an intense and actually claustrophobic action thriller about Rambo being hunted in the woods by a bunch of cops. He has to survive by making traps and outsmarting everyone, not just blowing everyone away with giant machine guns. He only even kills one person in the entire film and that is by accident while protecting himself. But even with all of that this is still one of the best action movie ever made. This is proof that you don't need giant explosions and guns to create great action. It's actually a shame those sequels got made and soiled the great name of this film. If they had just called those movies something else i would probably have liked them better, but as sequels to this they just don't work at all.
"You're gonna eat lightnin' and you're gonna crap thunder!"
Yeah, this is not really an action movie, but there was really no other movie that could ever top this list. I love Rocky! It is by far one of my all time favorite movies. It's in my top 5 at least. This is such a great and inspiring underdog story. I remember getting so mad the first time i watched this because Rocky didn't win the final fight against Apollo Creed (hope i didn't spoil that for anyone), but i totally get that ending now. It was not about winning, it was about actually doing what you love and not letting where you come from or hoe rich or poor you you are stop you. Rocky went from being a bum who was shaking down guys for a load shark to not only getting a chance to fight one of the current champions in boxing, but finally getting the courage to ask out the woman he was in love with and making her his girlfriend. It also has a lot of funny moments and great characters. Paulie and Mickey are still two of my favorite movie characters. The boxing scenes in this movie are also really good. The final fight against Apollo is still very tense each time i watch it. Even when i know the outcome i still stand up and root for Rocky each time. I can't think of a single thing i don't like about this film. It's a classic and one of my favorite movies.
This is just a list of his action movies so no Cop Land or Antz.
