Honorable Mentions

Games I played in 2011 that I thought were fun but not enough to scratch the top ten.

Pokémon Black Version - Nintendo DS

Scepticism plagued me when I saw that there's going to be a fifth generation of Pokemon. I love Pokemon but since the third generation, I think its completely running itself to the ground with newer and newer Pokemons getting added, most of them are pretty useless and never improving its core gameplay but instead putting gimmicky aesthetics to its multiplayer feature. Black/White is still is the same old Pokemon game but I have to admit, it is a lot better than the fourth generation. The graphics are quite nice, the battle system has improved and its story was the most interesting since the second generation. Shame it doesn't have a lot of replay value surprisingly.

The last piece of story from Ezio's life, it feels like this game was made for just the sake of it. Ezio is the most beloved character in the Assassin's Creed games and it's not surprising that this game was released. While it was still the same good old Assassin's Creed gameplay and Constantinople looks incredible by design, it did feel short in terms of story since in the entire game, Ezio felt like a bystander rather than a main character. It's also way too short for a full released.

A Star Wars MMORPG is a dream come true for someone who likes Star Wars and for the most part, The Old Republic delivers on that. The story for each of the classes are top notch, thanks to Bioware. Your character has a voice and in Bioware fashion, your decisions matter. Combat is pretty much the same as the KOTOR games and it works well. My only problem with the game is that some of the levels are way, way too big and you have to work hard for a faster transport.

Sonic Generations - PlayStation 3

A good Sonic game? In this day and age? Seriously, when was the last time you played an actual good Sonic game? Well, there' Sonic Colours but you have to admit, the blue hedgehog has not been doing very well for the last couple of years. On the 20th Anniversary of this old franchise, Sonic Generations capture many things that the older, better Sonic games had. The level designs are fun, the controls are a lot tighter and the 3d levels are actually quite responsive.

Resistance 3 - PlayStation 3

Resistance 3 was part of the plethora of shooters in the same quarter of the year with number 3 at the end of their titles. This is one of the more impressive shooters to come out in that quarter, even with a short length, it had a plethora of versatile weapons and able to carry them all and I liked how it reminded me of the campy alien films back in the 1950's even if it does seem like it takes it self quite seriously.

Orcs Must Die! - PC Games

Question; are Orcs inherently evil? I mean in most fantasy fiction that I have encountered, they're mostly the bad guys. Maybe they're just misunderstood. Of course, that doesn't mean that they aren't fun to slaughter, which they are. Orcs Must Die takes a very three dimensional take on the "defend this point" type of games. Collect money, set traps, see pain, rinse and repeat, which can be the game's weakest point, being a bit repetitive at points. One fun change to it is that you have a character to move about instead of just an external omnipotent force.

Mario Kart 7 - Nintendo 3DS

Mario Kart games are like a tradition to me. For a new Nintendo console, Mario Kart is the first game purchased with it. Since Mario Kart DS, the controls have drastically improved and 7 is no different. My problem with this game is that it doesn't have many fun features that Mario Kart DS had and the gameplay changes were quite minute. Yes, changing what your cart looks like is quite nice but the gliding and underwater parts felt lazy to me.

Rayman: Origins - Xbox 360

Platforming games are pretty uncommon in this day and age, and Rayman Origins does a good job capturing what a true platformer is. The art designs are gorgeous and kind of wacky, the level designs are pretty imaginative and the controls function very well though it isn't tight, which can lead to many mistakes

L.A. Noire - PlayStation 3

L.A. Noire is one of the more positive signs that adventure games are coming back. This game is an adventure game at heart as you find important items and use them to get to a specific goal. Noire perfectly captures the 1940 settings of America and its atmosphere does make you feel like a detective. As I've said, it is an adventure game and that notion does put off some people who wants a GTA set in the 40's. While it does lack in deeper gameplay, its story, voice acting and its highly innovative face capture makes L.A. Noire something quite special.

Battlefield 3 - PlayStation 3

In my opinion, this is the best out of the "3" first person shooter games to come out in 2011. Battlefield games are at heart, multiplayer games and BF3 is no different. I think this is the first in the numbered series where it has a single player story but it's kind of pointless to talk about it as it is incredibly dull. BF3 shines of course in its incredible multiplayer. It's realistic gameplay, vast number of vehicles and robust upgrade system makes you keep coming back for more.

Bastion - PC Games

From an independent game stand point, Bastion seems like the most ambitious and highly funded indie game I've seen. The art design is gorgeous, the soundtrack is amazing, one of the best I've heard in gaming and its narrative is somewhat quite relaxing, all thanks to the baritone narrator throughout the game. The gameplay can be hit and miss at points as the isometric view can hinder where or when you attack and move, especially in combat.

inFAMOUS 2 - PlayStation 3

Being a super hero, or super villain, never felt so authentic. Infamous 2 continues it's predecessor's engaging sand box style of gameplay and adds more powers, more story and even bigger missions. All the powers you acquire caters to the overall gameplay, from exploration to combat and adds a surprising amount of strategy when fighting different types of enemies. The story is a good, albeit repeated, continuation with better characterisation and a very satisfying pay off at the end.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - PlayStation 3

The third game in the Deus Ex series is a welcome return from a somewhat disappointing Deux Ex: Invisible Wars. Human Revolution recaptures the first Deux Ex's open ended nature and the weight of choices via conversations in missions. It perfectly captures the sci-fi, cyberpunk feel of films like Blade Runner, the upgrade system is one of the most intuitive I've ever experienced, and it is probably one of the finest stealth games I have played in a long while. My only problems with this game are that the majority of boss battles are a joke and the gunplay isn't as competent as the stealth

Minecraft - PC Games

While Minecraft has been out for a while, it was technically released fully in 2011 so it counts. Minecraft is probably one of the most important games to come out this generation and its impact is undeniable. From its simple controls, deep crafting system and open ended freedom, Minecraft is just awesome and will probably endure for the years to come. It is recommended that you play with friends but it is still fun to play on your own, making and planning projects, losing track of time.

The third and hopefully, last in the Uncharted trilogy, Drake's Deception is a very humble ending to the PS3's signature franchise. While it doesn't have the fun character skins and is slightly lacking in the awe factor that Uncharted 2 brought, it is still the same great Uncharted game. Great story with memorable characters and incredible graphics and action set pieces. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the previous games but if it works, it works though the aiming on this game is a lot stiffer. Multiplayer is awesome as well as it captures the cinematic gameplay that the single player offers and it is fun as hell.

Portal 2 - PC Games

You'd be surprised how little games today involve just using your brains and wits. Portal 2 builds from what made Portal work and made it even better. The story is not a rethread but a clever continuation supported by clever comedic writing, great pacing and excellent voice acting. The developers fully knew that the overall gameplay of Portal is pitch perfect so they concentrate on the game's most excellent aspect; the level designs. With the additions of gels, bridges and carriers, the level designs are so ingenious that you will keep questioning how they come up with them. It also has probably one of the best co-op I have ever played in a game since the best and most ingenious levels are in this mode.

Batman: Arkham City - PlayStation 3

Best super hero game ever? That doesn't even justify it. The Arkham games are the finest example of how to do a game based off a licensed property and how to do a super hero game. Arkham City ups the quality by being more of an open world. The gameplay, though not changed a lot, is still the awesome stealth + beat em up style and it doesn't need fixing. While I much preferred Asylum's more linear approach to its storytelling, it is the same good old gritty and gothic story that Batman is known for and it is an overall highly respectful fan service for those who love Batman.

2011 was an important year for the Zelda franchise. 25 years old, it surprises me how a franchise this old has aged so incredibly well. Skyward Sword celebrates the franchise's 25th anniversary by being the chronological first in its storyline. Skyward Sword is the best game Nintendo Wii has to offer because it is probably the only game in its whole library that utilises the Wii's gimmicky motion controls to the fullest, even if they are not perfect. What can I really say more about the gameplay, it's Zelda, that's where it always shines the most but certain changes are very much appreciated such as the overworld being a lot more seamless when swapping from dungeon to dungeon, not to mention the dungeons being the best designed sets of dungeons in the whole series. The story, while not as good as Majora's or Twilight's, is a lot more cinematic and there's very good characterisation from Link and Zelda. Oh and did I mention that this game's Zelda is just awesome?

I had to contemplate deep and hard if whether Skyrim was more fun to play than Skyward Sword and vice-versa. Being a Zelda fan, I should have put Skyward Sword at number one but there are more factors than that. Which game had the better gameplay, which game did I put more hours into, which game had a more compelling story etcetera etcetera. In the long run, by a hair pin I had to go with Skyrim, basing from the hours of play and re-playability of it because it is so damn fun. Not only did I spent more time on this game than any other game in this list, it has many things to offer in its huge, living world. Most of the quest are very interesting, the atmosphere is incredible, the gameplay is the best out of all the Elder Scrolls games, its RPG elements are accessible but still deep and it is just easy to get lost in this game. I think I spent like 100+ hours in this game and I don't think I barely even scratched it.

These are games that I have personally played. Games had to be released in 2011 in Europe. Does not include remakes or late releases from the previous year.
