1942. BOB HOPE as Orville "Turkey" Jackson, BING CROSBY (Jeff Peters), DOROTHY LAMOUR (Princess Shalmar), ANTHONY QUINN (Mullay Kasim), DONA DRAKE (Mihirmah), YVONNE DE CARLO (handmaiden), GEORGE GIVOT (Neb Jolla), MONTE BLUE (Kasim's aide), VLADIMIR SOKOLOFF (Hyder Khan), MIKHAIL RASUMNY (Ahmed Fey), NESTOR PAIVA (sausage vendor), CY KENDALL (fruit vendor), DAN SEYMOUR (slave buyer), LEON BELASCO (undertaker), SUZANNE RIDGEWAY (handmaiden), PATSY MACE (handmaiden), BROOKE EVANS (handmaiden), POPPY WILDE (handmaiden), RALPH PENNEY (Arab waiter), STANLEY PRICE (idiot), NICK SHAID (Arab guard), SARA BERNER (voice of camel). Directed by David Butler. For me this was one of the best of the "Road" pictures. Packed full of direct to the camera jokes (and ad-libs) plus memorable songs such as "Moonlight Becomes You" and "We're off on the Road to Morocco". The film was highly praised by the critics and loved by the public.

The Paleface (1948)
1948. BOB HOPE as Painless Peter Potter, JANE RUSSELL (Calamity Jane), ROBERT ARMSTRONG (Terris), IRIS ADRIAN (Pepper), BOBBY WATSON (Toby Preston), JOSEPH VITALE (Indian Scout), CHARLES TROWBRIDGE (Governor Johnson), CLEM BEVANS (Hank Billings), NESTOR PAIVA (Potter's patient), HENRY BRANDON (Wapato - medicine man), STANLEY ANDREWS (Commissioner Emerson), IRON EYES CODY (Chief Iron Eyes), TOM KENNEDY (bartender), JACK SEARL (Jasper Martin), JEFF YORK (Big Joe), HARRY HARVEY (Justice of the Peace), LANE CHANDLER (cowboy advising "lean to the right"), SYD SAYLOR (cowboy advising "stand on toes"), OLIVER BLAKE (cowboy advising "aim to west"), HARRY WILSON (cowboy in saloon), JOHN MAXWELL (village gossip), WALLY BOYLE (hotel clerk), EDGAR DEARING (sheriff), DICK ELLIOTT (Mayor). Directed by Norman Z. McLeod. This was one of Bob Hope's biggest moneymakers which encouraged Paramount to make a sequel "Son of Paleface" in 1952. Hope is "Painless Peter Potter" - an inept dentist who gets involved with stunning Jane Russell out West. The film introduced the Oscar nominated song "Buttons and Bows" which became a big hit.

1954. BOB HOPE as Eddie Foy, MILLY VITALE (Madeleine Morando Foy), GEORGE TOBIAS (Barney Green), ANGELA CLARKE (Clara Morando), HERBERT HAYES (Judge), RICHARD SHANNON (stage manager), BILLY GRAY (Brian Foy), LEE ERICKSON (Charley Foy), PAUL DE ROLF (Richard Foy), LINDA REED (Mary Foy), TOMMY DURAN (Irving Foy), JIMMY BAIRD (Eddie Foy Jr), LINDA BENNETT (Madeleine Foy), JERRY MATHERS (Brian Foy aged 5), JACK PEPPER (theatre manager), GEORGE PEMBROKE (stage manager), JIMMY CONLIN (stage doorman), JAMES CAGNEY (George M. Cohan). Directed by Melville Shavelson. True story of top vaudeville star Eddie Foy. The highlight of the film was Hope's table top dance with James Cagney recreating his role as George M Cohan. He insisted on doing his part without payment as payback for the many free meals he had at Foy's home when he was starting out as a struggling vaudeville performer. "The Seven Little Foys" was a major box office success and critics were very impressed with Hope's dramatic performance in the film.

1942. BOB HOPE as Larry Haines, MADELEINE CARROLL (Karen Bentley), GALE SONDERGAARD (Madame Stephanie Runick), GEORGE ZUCCO (Dr Hugo Streger), LIONEL ROYCE (Karl), WALTER KINGSFORD (Dr Wallace Faber), VICTOR VARCONI (Miller), EDWARD GARGAN (Mulrooney), JAMES BURKE (union secretary), ROBERT EMMETT KEANE (Nat Burton), CARL "ALFALFA" SWITZER (Frederick), ISABEL RANDOLPH (Frederick's mother), JAMES MILLICAN (truck driver), ESTHER HOWARD (Mrs Topley), DOOLEY WILSON (porter), PAUL SCARDON (Dr Robert Higby), ERVILLE ALDERSON (sheriff), TOM FADDEN (Tom Douglas), FRED KELSEY (policeman), EDGAR DEARING (policeman), DICK RUSH (policeman), EDWARD PEIL SR. (policeman), JACK CLIFFORD (policeman), MONTE BLUE (policeman), ART MILES (policeman), MAX WAGNER (bus driver), JACK SHEA (ice cream vendor), BING CROSBY (man outside Union Hall). Directed by Sidney Lanfield. Madeleine Carroll is cast as an attractive spy who teams up with unsuspecting small time vaudeville act Hope to help her deliver some secret orders which involves him in cross country chases and several dangerous situations. The film was loosely based on "The 39 Steps" which ironically had starred Madeleine Carroll in the Hitchcock version. Bing Crosby appears in a cameo role. Another big box office success for Hope who was at his peak in the 40s.

1944. BOB HOPE as Sylvester the Great, VIRGINIA MAYO (Princess Margaret), WALTER BRENNAN (Featherhead), WALTER SLEZAK (La Roche), MARC LAWRENCE (Pedro), HUGO HAAS (cafe owner), VICTOR McLAGLEN (Captain Barrett), TOM KENNEDY (Alonzo), STANLEY ANDREWS (ship's captain), BRANDON HURST (Mr Pelly), JAMES FLAVIN (naval officer), ROBERT WARWICK (the King), RAY TEAL (guard), MIKE MAZURKI (pirate), HARRY WILSON (pirate), BING CROSBY (commoner on ship). Directed by David Butler. Another of Hope's best films from the 40s - this time for Samuel Goldwyn. Hope plays entertainer Sylvester (the man of 1,000 faces) travelling by ship when it is captured and overrun by pirates. Beautiful Princess Margaret (Virginia Mayo) teams up with Hope to make their way to safety so that she can marry the commoner she loves. There are many memorable and amusing sequences with yet another cameo role by Bing Crosby in a Hope film.

1947. BOB HOPE as Ronnie Jackson, DOROTHY LAMOUR (Baroness Carlotta Montay), PETER LORRE (Kismet), LON CHANEY JR (Willie), JOHN HOYT (Dr Lundau), CHARLES DINGLE (Major Simon Montague), REGINALD DENNY (James Collins), ANN DORAN (Miss Rogers), FRANK PUGLIA (Baron Stefan Montay), JACK LA RUE (Tony), JEAN WONG (Mrs Fong), JAMES FLAVIN (Det. Lt. Hennessey), JACK CLIFFORD (prison guard), RAY TEAL (State Trooper), ANTHONY CARUSO (first man on death row), ALAN LADD (Sam McCloud), BING CROSBY (Harry). Directed by Elliott Nugent. A most impressive supporting cast help to make this another box office winner for Bob Hope. He plays baby photographer Ronnie Jackson who desperately wants to be a private detective. While in the office of a private eye he is mistaken for the detective by Dorothy Lamour and agrees to take on the case of her missing uncle. This involves him with mobsters and puts him (and her) into many dangerous situations and tight corners. Entertaining cameos from Alan Ladd and Bing Crosby adds to the enjoyment.

1952. BOB HOPE as Peter "Junior" Potter, JANE RUSSELL (Mike Delroy), ROY ROGERS (Roy Barton), BILL WILLIAMS (Kirk), LLOYD CORRIGAN (Doc Lovejoy), PAUL E. BURNS (Ebenezer Hawkins), DOUGLASS DUMBRILLE (Sheriff McIntyre), IRON EYES CODY (Chief Yellow Cloud), HARRY VON ZELL (Mr Stoner), JEAN WILLES (Penelope - Junior's Harvard girlfriend), FRANK CORDELL (Dade), JACK PEPPER (customer in restaurant), HANK MANN (first bartender), CHESTER CONKLIN (second bartender), JUNE EASTON (Clara), DON DUNNING (Wally), CECIL B. DeMILLE (photographer), BING CROSBY (man driving car). Directed by Frank Tashlin. Many critics rated this film as the best of Hope's career. It is certainly one of my favourites. Much of the film's success is due to director Frank Tashlin who also wrote many of the gags and part of the script. His background in cartoons at Warner Bros. stood him in good stead when writing some of the splendid visual jokes for this film. Tashlin also worked with Jerry Lewis on some of his better films. The gag appearances by Cecil B. DeMille and Bing Crosby were an unexpected treat.
