Nora and Solveig are hiking through snow-covered, rough, but beautiful scenery on a tour of several days that will take the two young women to the top of a mountain. Solveig, three months pregnant, seems incapable of doing anything the way Nora wants her to. Solveig hopes that the trip will set in motion a process of soul-searching that will help them to cope with their grief and give their relationship a chance. But although their plan sounds sensible, in reality, it proves to be a painful process during which all their pent-up bitterness, hurt feelings and fears gradually surface. Viva Riva! (2010)

Even the church will betray its tenets for a piece of the action. But Riva's main nemesis is Azor, a crime boss in the classic style: big, decadent and brutal. Riva catches sight of her dancing at a nightclub and it's not long before Nora matches the fuel cache as a coveted object of his lust.

Ari and Oona. Two 15-year-old girls, two dysfunctional families. Absolute opposites and yet somehow similar. No one listens, no one hears. Ari feels she is misunderstood and compensates for this by having sex with unknown men; Oona expresses the pain over her beloved father's suicide through self-mutilation and morbid drawings. Opposites attract. Ari is a blonde who paints herself up like a canary, Oona loves things as black as night. Their unlikely friendship helps them survive the hypocrisy of their families. Ari finally gains some kind of self-respect, and Oona learns to give vent to her pain. Then something happens that threatens their friendship at its very roots.... The scope of the debuting director's creative interests is evident both in the mix of cinematic devices that enrich the narration (animated passages, amateur film recordings, music videos), as well as in the artistic stylization, which directly references her grounding in comics.

For over 40 years, Lynn Hershman was at the heart of its developments and collected hundreds of interviews with many of the key personalities, visionaries, artists, curators and activists influencing feminist art. Based on those recordings, !W.A.R. documents the changing dynamics of feminism and is a committed film manifesto that asks crucial questions about the role of women in politically conscious art, beginning in the politically charged 1960s that included Guerrilla Girls campaigns, protests against galleries that showed only male artists’ work, heated debates on the politicisation of the female body, changing concepts of sexuality, as well as gender and race within feminist discourse. Hershman Leeson’s film is a visit to the pantheon of the feminist movement: Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, Carolee Schneemann, Yvonne Rainer, Yoko Ono, Marina Abramović, and even Miranda July. Carrie Brownstein wrote music for the film, but the soundtrack also includes Laurie Anderson, Janis Joplin, Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip, Erase Errata and Tribe 8. !W.A.R. is a collective portrait of the women who have made art what it is today.

homo@lv (2010)

In the summer of 2005, two guys came up with the idea to organize an unprecedented event - a festive lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people's parade through the streets of Riga, the capital of Latvia. Following the example of similar LGBT parades in Western cities, they decided to call it 'Pride'. Little did they know that their good intent would spiral into a chain of inconceivable events lasting several years. The great emotion stirred up would dramatically divide Latvian Society; the persons involved would be showered, in turn, with human excrement and holy water. Families would be torn apart, jobs lost, and a pastor expelled from the church for free thinking. They could not have imagined that crowds of Western 'reinforcements' would flock to support both sides or that Jesus, the Devil, patriotism and human rights would all be used in the rhetoric surrounding the topic, and that the media would eagerly report it all. In the end, could it be that the victims of this hostility were all those involved, because for someone, somewhere it was beneficial to set us against one another? Kaspars Goba worked on this film for five years. The extensive footage collected over the years enables the spectator to get an extraordinarily deep insight into the opinions and life stories of the individuals on both the Pride and NoPride fronts. The astonishing unearthing of Pride in Riga as shown in Kaspars Goba's work, from its inception in 2005 through to the announcement that Pride would not be held in Riga in 2010, enables the viewer to consider these events from a different perspective. One can contemplate the role politicians play in manipulating people's ideals, and also ask: what is the price of democracy in Latvia?

Chantal is the manager, hostess and stage-hogging frontwoman of ‘House of Shame – Party’. In this documentary, filmmaker Johanna Jackie Baier tells her story. It begins with Chantal’s escape to Berlin from the confines of a small country town in southwest Germany in the autumn of 1980. Interweaving interviews and portraits, but also on- and off-stage stories, backstage gossip, copious amounts of music and excerpts from her shows, the film allows Chantal’s story to unfold before a backdrop of recent and very recent history. HOUSE OF SHAME takes us to the squats of Oranienstrasse of the early 1980s; to Martin Kippenberger’s newly founded club ‘SO36’; to the studios of the artists of the ‘Neuen Wilden’ movement (Salomé et al), and the epicentre of gay emancipation. The film also takes a look at the lives and deaths of transsexuals. No amount of colourful parades and riotous parties can conceal the fault lines in a personality: a body can thwart everything and lead to apartheid among sex workers, in bars and even in everyday professional life. The eponymous party is always the film’s focus. It’s been eleven years since this weekly party slot premiered. An instant hit, within a year, Chantal’s get-together had become the Thursday night floor-filler par excellence. The event is now a must for any self-respecting visitor to Berlin game for encounters of the transgressive kind – regardless of whether this involves inter-, trans- or other queer gender transgressions or simply the line between good taste and burlesque … Masculine types, queens, courageous heterosexuals – they all queue up gladly to catch a glimpse of Chantal and her weird and wacky entourage.

How Are You (2011)

HOW ARE YOU is a remarkable documentary about two now famous artists. The film brings us back to when they fell in love with each other and started working together. And even though the two young rebels started out shooting salt water into their veins, they ended up meeting a real queen at the peak of their fame. In an astonishing few years Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have become some of the biggest stars in the international art world. In a sharp, playful and humorous way they pinpoint important themes such as identity, sexuality, welfare and democracy. With simple twists and turns they make us confront ourselves and make us face the conformity and tightness of everyday life and our idiosyncrasies. The film not only displays a strong selection of their works - and the makings of these.

Lightflight (2011)

In 1953 Herbert Tobias was the first German photographer to work for “Vogue” in Paris. He was expelled from France in the same year however for protesting during a raid at a gay venue in the French capital. Success and failure were always Herbert Tobias’ twin companions. Having taken his first photographs as a soldier in the German army, after the war he worked as an actor and fell in love. After coming out in 1950, he escaped arrest by going to Paris where he found refuge at Willy Maywald’s studio. His initial success as a photographer was swiftly followed by his expulsion. Moving to Heidelberg, he competed successfully with 18,000 contestants to win a newspaper photography competition run by the “Frankfurter Illustrierte”. Tobias was on top again; much in demand as a photographer, his work was shown at exhibitions and he was also the subject of articles. But Tobias was not just a fashion photographer; his nude photography, his portraits and his documentary images would have graced any collection of contemporary art had art photography been more acknowledged and marketable at the time. Today, his portraits of Hildegard Knef, Andreas Baader, Klaus Kinski or Amanda Lear are now considered classics in the art of portrait photography. Sadly, Herbert Tobias was not to experience this late recognition of his work. Finding it increasingly hard to submit himself to the daily madness of fashion photography, he withdrew from photography, preferring to work in film and appear as an actor. Herbert Tobias died in 1982 as a result of an Aids-related infection. His grave in Altonaer cemetery in Hamburg was later turned into a memorial – albeit not until 2007. This film illuminates the life and work of this artist in all its breadth and diversity.

Werner Schroeter was one of the most significant proponents of New German Cinema. Schroeter was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. At the time, he was working for the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf gallery on a musical piece entitled ‘Schönheit der Schatten’ (The Beauty of Shadows) based on the works of Robert Schumann and Heinrich Heine. For Schroeter, oscillating between hope and trepidation, it marked the beginning of a race against time. In her film, Elfi Mikesch, who photographed a number of Schroeter’s films and who collaborated closely with him to create his vision, provides us with an intimate insight into Schroeter’s artistic output during the remaining four years of his life. MONDO LUX portrays Schroeter full of creative energy and enthusiasm for the cinema, theatre and photography. We observe him at rehearsals for ‘Antigone/Elektra’; preparing the photographic exhibition ‘Autrefois & Toujours’ and working intensively on the dubbed version of his last film, DIESE NACHT, which was shot in Portugal in 2008. Copious excerpts from Schroeter’s films, ranging from EIKA KATAPPA (1969) to DIESE NACHT (2009), reflect the colourful spectrum of his oeuvre, inscribed in a retrospective view that is pervaded by music. The film also illuminates biographical connections and enshrines the passionate bond that Schroeter felt towards film, opera and theatre, but also towards his friends, the people with whom he lived and worked. Schroeter was an artist propelled by Eros and by passion, a man who felt the proximity of both beauty and death. MONDO LUX constitutes an intimate space – a space in which, in view of the time the protagonist has left to live, every day becomes quite unlike any other. Werner Schroeter died on 12 April, 2010.

Zhao Liang’s film portrays Aids sufferers of both genders; they are all people with very different biographies. As if it wasn’t bad enough being infected by HIV, their suffering is compounded by the fact that in the People’s Republic of China the disease is hushed up and people living with Aids are ostracised. In China, the public at large knows very little about the disease and most people associate the virus with promiscuity. This fear of discrimination forces most patients to hide the fact that they are positive. The Aids sufferers in Zhao Liang’s film were willing to share their experiences with him. The filmmaker was able to make contact with them via internet support groups; he also visited children with Aids at a ‘red ribbon’ school; but above all, he talked to Aids sufferers during the making of Gu Changwei’s film. It is their presence which lends Changwei’s film its particular authenticity.

Generations is a 30 minute 16mm film about mentoring and passing on the tradition of personal experimental film making. Barbara Hammer, 70 years old, hands the camera to Gina Carducci, a young queer filmmaker. Shooting during the last days of Astroland at Coney Island, New York, the filmmakers find that the inevitable fact of aging echoes in the architecture of the amusement park and in the emulsion of the film medium itself. Editing completely separately both picture and sound, the filmmakers join their films in the middle when they have finished making a true generational and experimental experiment.

Maya Deren's Sink, a 30 minute experimental film, is an evocative tribute to the mother of avantgarde American film. The film calls forth the spirit of one who was larger than life as recounted by those who knew her. Teiji Ito's family, Carolee Schneemann and Judith Malvina, float through the homes recalling in tiny bits and pieces words of Deren's architectural and personal interior space. Clips from Maya Deren's films are projected back into the spaces where they were originally filmed appearing on the floorboard, furniture, and in the bowl of her former sink. Fluid light projections of intimate space provide an elusive agency for a filmmaker most of us will never know as film with its imaginary nature evokes a former time and space.
