Luke Skywalker & Frodo Baggins

Each is the main protagonist of the story. He comes from humble beginnings in isolated out of the way place (Tatooine/The Shire) where he was raised by a relative (Owen Lars/Bilbo Baggins) after being orphaned. His uneventful life would become disrupted when he comes into the possession of an item of key importance to the evil regime looming over his world (The Death Star Plans/The One Ring) that is being hunted down by agents in service of the dark lord. (Darth Vader/The Nazgul) A sagely wizard (Obi-Wan Kenobi/Gandalf) encourages him to go on a journey of his own to transport the artifact in his possession to a heroic stronghold (The Rebel Base/Rivendell) so that a plan can be put together to destroy the enemy's superweapon. (The Death Star/The Ring) Along the way he'd gain a number of allies that would become a sort of ragtag family. Even when his initial quest is complete however, he decides to continue on and see through this ultimate battle of good versus evil to the end even. He brandishes a blade that used by a relative on his own adventures (Anakin Skywalker/Bilbo Baggins) that becomes passed down to him. However he has to struggle with the allure of the dark forces that surround him (The Dark Side/The Ring) and if he faltered would lead to him becoming a tool of the dark lord himself. (Emperor Palpatine/Sauron) Along the way he comes to see in one of his enemies a humanity when he realizes that he had gone through much the same trials and temptations he is dealing with (Darth Vader/Gollum) and therefore wishes to hold out hope for his redemption. But when upon the final stretch of his journey deep within enemy territory (The Death Star II/Mount Doom) separated from his allied army that is doing battle afar, he'd be forced to do battle with that character whose interference ironically turns out to be pivotal in the mission being accomplished. Afterwards he be reunited with his friends and comrades in order to celebrate their victory and begin life anew.

During all this however, he must contend with consistently being a wanted man by powerful villains for one reason or another. (Jabba the Hutt & Darth Vader/Sauron & Saruman) He winds up taking on a major role of leadership (a general/a king) with which he leads a band of heroes in the decisive battle against the dark lord's army (The Battle of Endor/The Battle of the Morannon) whilst his young friend and ally ventures into the belly of the beast himself. Ultimately the battle is won and he gets to celebrate with the victory with his friends and allies. Including the beautiful princess he had been romancing (Leia Organa/Arwen) who he will finally get to start a life with.

And they are also ultimately the keeper of the story. (Artoo being around to witness the main of events of the saga throughout the years that would be recounted to the author of the "Journal of the Whills"/Sam being given custody of the "Red Book of Westmarch" where Bilbo and Frodo recorded the events surrounding their adventures)

(like announcing the dissolution of the Senate to the Empire's regional governors/like going out to treat with the Men of the West before the Battle of the Black Gate) He also attained a command role inside his group's most important structure. (as the commander of the Death Star/as the lieutenant of Barad-dur) His cruelty can overshadow that of his underlings, including taking amusement in threatening people with the suffering of those they care about in order to get them to do as he wants and all the while planning to backstab them anyway. (Threatening Alderaan in order to get Leia to reveal the location of the Rebel Base but destroying it anyway to make an example of them/Threatening to indefinitely torture Frodo in order to get the Men of the West to agree to his terms even though they plan to attack regardless in the books whilst on film he tried to break their spirits by similarly saying that Frodo had been tortured and killed)

He'd build a powerful army and wage war upon the world of the free peoples. Running an entire faction of his own (The Confederacy of Independent Systems/Isengard) whilst the dark lord took care of business within his own domain. (The Galactic Republic/Mordor) His refined demeanor and powerful voice giving him a striking presence that could inspire others to follow him but strike fear into his enemies. He would offer a member of his order the chance to join him on his campaign (Obi-Wan Kenobi/Gandalf) only to be steadfastly refused. He would offer a member of his order the chance to join him on his campaign (Obi-Wan Kenobi/Gandalf) only to be steadfastly refused. Leading to him keeping that character as his prisoner before he could be rescued by allies. His end would ultimately come with an ally's unexpected betrayal. (Palpatine/Grima Wormtongue)
Darth Vader & The Witch-King

Each is a powerful warrior who was once a man of high-standing (a Jedi Knight/a lord of men) who would come under the influence of the dark lord. (Darth Sidious/Sauron) Seduced by the promise of power he'd allow himself to be open to the forces of darkness but it would come at the cost of humanity. Leading him into becoming something less than human, something twisted and evil. (a cyborg/a wraith) He'd become the deadliest of the enemy's servants and utterly a slave to the will of his master. Being draped in black he'd go forth to serve as both a field agent and a commander. Going on to become one of if not the most recognizable symbol of fear for his side. He'd eventually be tasked with tracking down a vital artifact that could lead to their downfall in the hands of their enemies (The Death Star Plans/The One Ring) which would lead to him pursuing the main character (Luke Skywalker/Frodo Baggins) as it had come into his possession. Down the line the two would have a confrontation where he'd give the protagonist a severe injury that would leave a scar on him that he'd carry the rest of his life. (chopping off Luke's hand/stabbing Frodo with a Morgul blade) He'd eventually meet his end during a major battle (The Battle of Endor/The Battle of the Pelennor Fields) where he'd partake in combat with a young warrior (Luke Skywalker/Eowyn) which would become particularly personal because somebody they cared about gets threatened (Leia Organa/Théoden) and ultimately lead into his death where the fulfillment of a prophecy is seen. (The prophecy of the Chosen One bringing balance to the Force/The prophecy by Glorfindel that the Witch-King would fall to the hand of no man)

Darth Sidious & Sauron

Each serves as the main antagonist of their respective stories. One who extols and ominous air that hangs over everything. Whilst powerful in the dark arts arguably his most dangerous talents include being able to corrupt people's hearts and turn them into his servants as well as manipulating large swaths of people. Being able to put up a charismatic guise (As a mild-mannered politician/In his fair forms) in order to ingratiate himself to those around him. He'd relentlessly campaign to bring the free peoples under his dominion and in this pursuit would see to the creation of a powerful superweapon (The Death Star/The One Ring) that the heroes saw as the thing that would turn the tide of the conflict in his favor if it wasn't destroyed. His downfall would come during a confrontation between the protagonist who is struggling with the influence of the dark lord (Luke Skywalker/Frodo Baggins) and another who had previously succumbed to it. (Darth Vader/Gollum) These events would lead to the latter's death in which he'd take the big bad down with him. (Vader sacrificing himself to destroy Palpatine/Gollum falling into Mount Doom with the Ring)

Darth Plagueis & Morgoth

Each served as the preceding dark lord within their world. One that while not an active part of the story everybody knows in which he is only mentioned has a legacy that lives on to influence its events. Most importantly through his former disciple that took on up his mantle (Darth Sidious/Sauron) who serves as the main antagonist. He would look into and become best known for knowing the arts that would allow him to twist and shape life itself.

So I posted this list years ago, and for a time it was an ongoing pet project. I wound up putting it into private when I saw it became a behemoth with a lot of weak comparisons that were pretty much there for the sake of trying to cram in as much as possible. It became pretty embarrassing actually. However, I've decided to trim out the fat, well over half of the thing, distill it down to the basics, and finally put it back. Hopefully with the age from all these years since from a wiser perspective. To try and really put the quality of the points about story and theme ahead of just match-ups for the sake of match-ups. As well as including new ones that struck me as being more fitting. Even if that means certain notable characters getting left out for the time being. My biggest weakness the first time around was my facile understanding of Tolkien's literature. I have to own up to that. With the match-ups I have included now I try to note when comparisons come from one source or the other whilst generally honing in on the elements they share. Once gain, I'll be editing this as an ongoing process throughout. So even the things I have written down there already will be refined further. If you have any suggestions for alterations or additions feel free to share them!
I will say for the record that the biggest weakness for me are the entries for the protagonists from "The Hobbit". (The villains actually seem to fit fine with counterparts I think are worthy of them) The ones who aren't Gandalf anyway. Their positions in their respective universes I think work okay, but the scope of their roles aren't completely congruous. (Granted you could maybe argue for that being the case for some of the other ones as well) The reason for this being that whilst there are more carryover characters from the two main "eras" for lack of a better term I am dealing with from Star Wars (The Prequel and Original Trilogies) the same cannot be said for the majority of those form the Middle-Earth lore. (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories) I'll try my best and am willing to hear suggestions on how others think I should handle that.

I recent found a list called JEDI OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF A NEW HOPE on this website made by a user called KCenturion. I thought it was very cool, well done, and fun to read. It's how I found this site, and what inspired me to do this list. If you haven't seen his list I recommend you check it out.
This list is comparison of many things, mostly characters, from the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings sagas. Since I thought of most of these before finishing the book a few of them fit more in line with the films. But I tried to have most of them fit with both versions. For this I use STAR WARS characters from both trilogies (No EU characters, but I use some EU info for the lesser developed characters that appear in the films). For LORD OF THE RINGS I am using both the books and films (any items exclusive to either are marked) as well as things from THE HOBBIT (as it is the real start of the LOTR story). I am also using some character who are more or less just from the legenderium of LOTR that did not appear physically in LOTR or the Hobbit. They at least play some type of part in the story.
I don't know if anybody's done a list like this before, so I apologize if it's similar to any lists done in the past that I didn't know about. I tried to avoid reading other lists about this topic and tried to do this all on my own. I'm also not trying to say that George Lucas ripped-off J.R.R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson ripped-off George Lucas, or anything else like that.
I'd love feedback. I know some (actually probably a lot) of these are stretches (particularly the middle character comparisons), but keep in mind that this is just for fun. I know A LOT of these are not really that similar but this is basically just to see how far I could go no matter how vague.
