Darling (1965)
Watched: February 22, 2020.

Director: John Schlesinger

Starring:

Julie Christie as Diana

Dirk Bogarde as Robert Gold

Laurence Harvey as Miles Brand

Two words: Julie Christie.

She carries this movie about the swinging sixties. She is absolutely mesmerizing, beautiful and natural as Diana. There's something about her character, careless and free at the same time, as she wanders from lover to lover, without never knowing what she really wants...

I like to think of this film as a time capsule of the 60's in the U.K.

A good film.

Director: Agnès Varda

Starring:

Corinne Marchand as Florence 'Cléo' Victoire

Antoine Bourseiller as Antoine

This is a very charming film! Cléo is afraid of having a deathly disease, but everyone around her seems to diminishes her fear... until she meets that one man who listen to her and understand her. Sometimes, it takes someone you don't know at all to really listen to you. I liked how the characters find each other at the end of the film: Cléo and Antoine, the benevolent soldier. Also, this film feels like an hymn to the beautiful city of Paris. I've never been there, but somehow I felt like I visited it through this film..!
A great film!

The Fury (1978)
Watched: February 21, 2020.

Director: Brian DePalma

Starring:

Kirk Douglas as Peter

John Cassavetes as Childress

Carrie Snodgress as Hester

Amy Irving as Gillian

Andrew Stevens as Robin

First of all, I have to say I feel like this film is underrated. I was surprised to see it aged very well and it is a very entertaining and stylish film. That being said, it is not perfect, nor DePalma's best work, but it is an interesting film, mixing the multiple genres of sci-fi, horror and spy-thriller. The cast is great: Kirk Douglas is great and believable as a former government agent desperately looking for his kidnapped son. Cassavetes is also particularly great as the villain. Amy Irving's performance is also worth of notice, as Gillian, a young girl with psychic powers who helps Kirk Douglas' character find his missing son. The score, composed by John Williams, is a perfect mix to the suspense atmosphere.
Good movie!

Very entertaining film! Al Pacino is great as Tony D'Amato, coach of the Miami Sharks in the film. Jamie Foxx also shines as rookie Will Beamen, who unexpectedly becomes a star Quarterback. If you love sports, especially football, you'll most likely enjoy this film!

Director: Randa Haines

Starring:

John Hurt as James

Marlee Matlin as Sarah

Piper Laurie as Mrs. Norman

I thought this film was very touching, especially Marlee Matlin as Sarah, a 25 year old deaf woman. I think it depicted really well the oppression suffered by deaf people, how it is easy for us, non-deaf people, to interpret as we want ,what they are meaning to express. It was a thought-provoking movie for me, with a nice story. John Hurt managed to be both charming and annoying in this film, and I don't know what to think of his character, quite frankly. Although the film is good, the ending was predictable and, I think it was disappointing. Like, something was missing or... I don't know. Nonetheless, a good film!

Director: Charlie Chaplin

Starring:

Charlie Chaplin as A Factory Worker

Paulette Goddard as A Gamin

This film is amazing! Charlie Chaplin's genius is perfectly illustrated in this film, which he directed, wrote, starred in and even scored. This man was just unbelievable. He's hilarious without even saying a word. The film, a comedy about the industrialized world, is the final film in which we see Chaplin's iconic characters, The Tramp. It's themes of unemployment and modernity in The Great Depression are very well depicted. The characters are lovable. There are plenty of hilarious moments and the music is great. I really love the ending, when we see Chaplin and Goddard walking away in the middle of the street, going who knows where... There's promise at the end of this film for the two main characters. This film is perfection.

YOU MUST NOT MISS THIS FILM IF YOU'RE AN AVID CINEMA LOVER!

This film was very good. I was impressed by Jeanne Moreau's performance. Not only her character was very well written, but she did a great job portraying the chambermaid, giving her sass and humor, as well as intelligence and depth. The dynamics of power were very well depicted, and you realize that power is not always determined by hierarchy. Sex, desire, talebearing are examples of demonstrations of power in this film. Great film by Buñuel!

Wow! This film was really great! Actually, I'm shocked by the ratings, they seem pretty low to me. The themes were interesting and well depicted (love, loneliness, aborption, coming of age, daughter-mother relationships, etc.). The cinematography looked amazing. The score and the music were good. But, most of all, the performances by the three main leads were very remarkable. This film aged very, very well in my opinion (and to my surprise). Interesting film here. The main focus isn't really the whodunnit, but it's more about the hierarchies and the dynamics surrounding the characters (who were, by the way, very well written). I think it's an entertaining film, while slow at times, but nonetheless a good film with an interesting intrigue. The acting is great, the atmosphere is stylish. I thought this film was kind of cheesy. The music was good, but the story wasn't really interesting. Two women fighting for the love and affection of Willie Nelson... not my cup of tea. Acting wasn't exceptional either.
One thing I liked though, was that director Jerry Schatzberg did well capturing something I would call the "country culture". Dances and music and clothes... all of that was enjoyable. OK film.

I found the film's story rather insipid. Probably because it was pure war propaganda and it felt really dated. I did not get the flower storyline either: I just didn't get the meaning of it. I must admit Greer Garson's performance was the highlight of this film. The sets looked fake, except for the war sequences which I found to be realistic. I was disappointed with the film considering its high ratings.

I enjoyed this film as a whole. However, I must admit I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting much, regarding the high ratings on Listal and IMDB and the success it had at the Academy Awards in 1954 (8 Wins, 13 nominations). Also, this cast is quite impressive (Lancaster, Kerr, Clift, Reed, Sinatra). It is a good film, but I felt like the story was too slow at times. Overall, great performances by all (especially Montgomery Clift). Good film about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

What an interesting film! I did not know much about it before watching it, except it was on the Criterion Channel. The story is rather original: A disabled young girl expose her parent's infidelities by reuniting them in a mansion with their respective lovers, to their surprise. Truths are revealed through a game of Chinese roulette. I really liked the film. It's though-provoking: Why do the parents hate their child so much? What happened to these people to make them so indifferent and insensitive? This film gave me a lot to think about, and its structure (the game), made the whole thing very enjoyable! Great performance by Andrea Schober, who plays the mysterious crippled Angela Christ. Great film with a great athmosphere!

I watched this at the theater with my mom and my grand-mother. I loved this adaptation at least equally as the 1994 version. The cinematography was beautiful. Beautiful performances from Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, the latter giving fresh air and maturity to the character of Amy March (also, thanks to Gerwig's brilliant adaptation). I thought Chalamet was midcast though, as well as Watson, but it didn't affect the quality of the film for me. Great film!

Loooveeed this film! A warm film, with the perfect mix of comedy and drama. It became an instant favorite. What a touching story! Top notch acting from Bates, Tandy, Masterson and Parker. The theme of true and deep friendship was beautifully depicted, I just could'nt help but cry.
I haven't read the book, so I can't compare it to its original work, but I absolutely adored it.

Really loved it. The acting was great (especially DiCaprio and Pitt), the cinematography was beautiful, soundtrack was amazing and Tarantino saved Sharon Tate... what's more to say? This film shows how great of a storyteller and filmmaker Tarantino is!
