People with Social Anxiety Disorder

During a concert in New York's Central Park in 1967, Barbra did what for her was unthinkable -- forgot the lyrics to a song. Unable to shrug off the incident and carry on like many performers do, the consummate perfectionist found herself unable to perform in public for nearly another three decades.

Finally ready to face her fears, Barbra performed live in Las Vegas over New Year's in 1994. Still battling her own fears, the star chose to use teleprompters to ensure that she did not forget the words to the songs.

Trent Reznor suffered from social anxiety disorder during the five years that followed the "Downward Spiral", along with the death of his grandmother.

""I'd be lying if I didn't say I didn't wake up nervous at the star of this tour," he adds. "I've always had weird social anxiety. I could walk into a room and feel like I was the guy who didn't belong there, even if it was backstage at my own show."

Imagine performing in front of millions of people as a young child. For some this may seem like a nightmare -- unfortunately for Donny Osmond this may have been where the nightmare began. When the musical talents of Donny and his brothers were discovered at an early age by Andy Williams, the family troupe began a merry-go-round of public performances.

During one of his first performances on the Andy Williams Show, Donny recalls running offstage after his song, afraid of the audience applause and flashing lights. Later, at age 6, he recalls being put on the spot and asked to perform an Ella Fitzgerald song -- and later feeling like a failure because he couldn't do it.

Although his feelings of anxiety began at an early age, it was not until 1994, while playing the lead character in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, that Donny became paralyzed by fear while onstage. He recalls little of the night the show premiered, other than the curtains being opened and closed.

Kim Basinger was so withdrawn as a child that her parents had her tested for autism and other psychiatric disorders; the tests did not find anything. Growing up, her worst fear was reading aloud in class, to the point that teachers believed she was having a nervous breakdown. When Kim took the podium to accept her Oscar in 1997 for LA Confidential, she couldn't find the words to speak, even though she had practiced for days.

Kim has spoken publicly about her struggles with panic disorder, agoraphobia and social anxiety, appearing in the HBO film, "Panic: A film about coping". Kim received psychological therapy for her anxiety but still remains shy and susceptible to panic and agoraphobia.
