November to December 2016 Tomatometer Predictions

Tomatometer Guess: 88%. Marvel Studios already had one huge hit earlier this year with Captain America: Civil War, and judging by the early reviews, Doctor Strange looks to be another home run for the studio.

Actual Score: 91%. What a shock, Marvel released yet another solid entertaining blockbuster.

In all seriousness, though, this movie has top notch acting from Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous hero (and every other cast member as well) amazing special effects, and great action balanced with some off-kilter comedy.
It's far from perfect, though. The humor occasionally fell flat and made the film feel uneven at times, and while the villain(played by Mads Mikkelsen) is serviceable, he's not given a whole lot of screen time.

Overall, it may not be in the upper-echelon of Marvel films, but it's still worth seeing in theaters and possibly worth revisiting in the future.

Tomatometer Guess: 90%. Though Mel Gibson has been away from the limelight after his "regrettable" comments a few years back, he's been attempting to make something of a comeback this year. First, in front of the camera in "Blood Father", and now behind it in Hacksaw Ridge.

With a star-studded cast and great initial word-of-mouth, it looks like it could be a smash hit.

Actual Score: 86%. Say what you will about his personal life, but Mel Gibson is a talented director, and Hacksaw Ridge is proof that he hasn't lost his touch yet.

The story, though somewhat cliche, is fascinating and moving. The acting is top notch from the entire cast. No one actor feels miscast or out of place in the film, everyone brings their A-Game. Especially Andrew Garfield, who is immensely likable as Desmond T. Doss, portraying a likable pacifist without coming off as preachy.

The battle sequences are brilliantly done. They're tense, well-shot, and are brutal. The violence never feels like it's glorifying war, but rather showing the horror and tragedy of it.

Seriously, this movie is easily one of the best I've seen all year, if you can stomach some of the graphic violence, you should go see it when you get the chance.

Tomatometer Guess: 71%. Given Dreamworks' inconsistent track record and the fact that this movie is based off a series of toys, I'm not expecting Trolls to be great, but I am expecting it to be at least enjoyable.

Actual Score: 76%. Trolls: The Movie is as cliche, cookie-cutter, and predictable as you can get with an animated film. However, it's at least competently made. The animation is nice and colorful, the dance numbers are well done, the leads are fun, and the story does have some heart.
It's definitely aimed more at kids than adults and not as good as say Zootopia, Finding Dory,or Kubo, but it's not as cringeworthy as some of DreamWorks' other efforts (I'm looking at you, Home).

Tomatometer Guess: 80%.

Actual Score: 91%. Though I preferred Jeff Nichols' other film from earlier this year, Midnight Special, Loving is still a gripping and heartbreaking drama with amazing performances from Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton.

Tomatometer Guess: 87% Denis Villeneuve directs this cerebral sci-fi film that is sure to be a critical hit like his previous works.

Actual Score: 96%. Superbly acted and brilliantly directed, Arrival is a thought provoking and dramatic Sci-Fi film that should not be missed.

Tomatometer Guess: 83%. Director Ang Lee's next film after Life of Pi. Enough said.

Tomatometer Guess: 82%. J.K. Rowling returns to the wonderful world of Harry Potter in this prequel spin-off.

Directed by David Yates and written by Rowling herself, it is intended to be the first in a series of 5 films.

Actual Score: 77%. Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them is an exciting and charming adventure set in the Harry Potter universe. It manages to lift elements from the previous films while also standing on its own and not feeling too much like fan service. It suffers from uneven pacing and occasionally choppy editing, but is still worth seeing.

Moana (2016)
Tomatometer Guess: 86%. Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho are co-leads in the 56th film from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Actual Score: 99%. I'll be honest,I didn't expect much from Moana. Not to say that I thought it would be bad but after Zootopia earlier this year, I expected it to be "good", but not great. Well, much like Zootopia, I was pleasantly surprised.

Moana is an absolute joy to watch in more ways than just one. As per usual, the animation is stunning and beautiful to look at.

The characters are also well done. Dwayne Johnson is charismatic as the demigod Maui and Auli'i Cravalho is very likable as the eponymous Moana.

The musical numbers (composed by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda) are catchy and reminiscent of Aladdin. Despite being very young, Cravalho has a beautiful singing voice.

Overall, I had a great time with Moana and chances are you will too. I highly recommend seeing it.

Tomatometer Guess: 78%. Robert Zemeckis directs this upcoming World War II thriller starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.

Actual Score: 61%. Allied is a well-acted and intriguing drama that may suffer from the pacing in the first act but is still a solid film.

Jackie (2016)
Tomatometer Guess: 85%. This biopic stars Natalie Portman as First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

Actual Score: 87%.
JWR's rating:
Tomatometer Guess: 84%. Set before the events of the original film, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones as a smuggler who joins forces with a group of rebels to steal the plans for the Death Star.

It is intended to be the first in a series of unrelated anthology movies.

Actual Score: 84%. With a darker tone, and more of an emphasis on the "war" aspect of Star Wars, Rogue One is an intense and exciting action film. However, it's pacing issues in the first act and lack of compelling characters keep it from being perfect.

Passengers (2016)
Tomatometer Guess: 73%. Directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and starring the two biggest faces in Hollywood right now, this sci-fi film is about two passengers on a spaceship who form a romance when their sleep pods open early.

Actual Score: 31%. While far from terrible, Passengers is a case of a brilliant concept not developed to its fullest potential. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are enjoyable, and it has entertaining moments, but its creative premise is traded in for an cliche romance.
JWR's rating:
People who added this item 452 Average listal rating (287 ratings) 4.9 IMDB Rating 5.7
Tomatometer Guess: 65%. Justin Kurtzel (2015's MacBeth) directs and Micheal Fassbender stars in this film Based off of the popular gaming series of the same name.

Will it finally be the film to break the video game movie curse, or will it suffer the same fate as Warcraft from earlier this year?

Actual Score: 18%. To nobody's surprise, a movie based off of a video game was terrible.

But seriously, this movie was a mess. The story of the 10+ hour games crammed into a sub-2 hour movie feels rushed and choppy. The actors all look bored and disinterested in the material. The script does a terrible job of adequately explaining what's going on to people not familiar with the games.

The best moments of the film take place in the past, where the action sequences and parkour are shown. Sadly they are far and few between since 80% of the movie takes place in the prison where Michael Fasbender's character is held. Sadly, these modern day scenes are bland and unengaging.

And even when they go to the past, they cut back and forth between both time periods via choppy editing. The action scenes are undone by terrible fast paced editing and bloodless violence thanks to the PG-13 Rating.

Overall, I'd highly advise skipping this movie and saving your money.

2016 will be a year remembered for many things (both good and bad). Hopefully, some of the films coming out in November and December will be one of those points of discussion.
