Beautiful Films: The Night of the Hunter

Misunderstood and undervalued on its release in 1955, Charles Laughton's masterpiece is now widely regarded as one of the greatest US films. While Mitchum gave a memorable performance as the phoney villainous preacher with Love and Hate tattooed on his hands (and exaggeration suiting the film's dark fairytale quality), much credit must go to Stanley Cortez' cinematography. Not forgetting Shelley Winters as the devout wife, and silent film star Lillian Gish, splendid as the guardian angel of little children, with rifle in hand.

I'll do some more in a small Beautiful Film series.
