Laurel and Hardy Shorts 2
- Brats (★★★★½)
- Helpmates (★★★★★)
- The Live Ghost (★★★★)
- Dirty Work (★★★★½)
- Me and My Pal (★★★★)
SCREENING: Laurel and Hardy
DATE: January 12th
CINEMA: BFI
LOCATION: Southbank
NOTE: These shorts were supposed to be screened in chronological order, finishing with The Live Ghost in 35mm. However, Helpmates was also screened in 35mm, and the changeover to digital caused a severe glitch in the projection before Dirty Work could be screened, and we had to wait a few minutes for the next short to start. They played The Live Ghost instead, to reassure us with that much-deserved entertainment as we waited for the digital projector to be fixed.

NOTE: My returning anxiety tried to prevent me from seeing this twice. I meant to see this on Tuesday, but I couldn’t sleep well enough to make it even though I did so early. It happened again the night before this screening, and I decided that was the last straw, so I drank two shots of coffee for the first time. It worked, and I went to see the film almost feeling as though this never happened.

NOTE: My history with this film......sure is intriguing. I planned to see this at LFF, but late in September came the announcement of Vox Lux’s UK premiere. This was the only chance I had to see that in cinemas, and I couldn’t get my Wild Rose ticket refunded or sold until the morning before its premiere. When I saw it on opening day, the sound system broke around the 55-minute mark, turning the audio quiet and fuzzy for a moment before following with a deafening, endless boop sound that sent the whole audience out of the screen. It was eventually cancelled, and we all got refunds. Swapped my ticket and saw the whole thing on Sunday with a smaller crowd but no technical f-ups whatsoever.
