So much of modern American cinema misses what once made it great, that being dirt under the fingernails blue collar grit. Themes of brotherhood, masculinity, black humour and poverty are threaded into this deceptively simple neo-western tale of two bank robbers. For me it says so much more about the current social divisions in the US than the vast majority of cinematic output of an elitist Hollywood obsessed with big bucks and fabricated corporate funded virtue signaling.

Looper (2012)

To be honest I'm not a huge Star Wars fan and the recent backlash against Rian Johnson for being a "SJW propagandist" was a bit of shock as being fond of his previous works I saw very little sign of it. Looper is a film I actually LOVE, in fact it might just be my favourite sci-fi flick of the decade, and I continue to enjoy it on repeat viewings. Being that it was clearly influenced by some of my favourite films of all time helped some, but it took it in an interesting and original direction and I really fell in love with those characters and that world.

The best action flick of the decade? Yup it's definitely The Raid II, yeah it's absurdly violent, almost pornographic at times but it's just done with an insane level of brilliant choreography one cannot help but stand back and applaud. A perfect sequel, it take the bone snapping brilliance of the first to a whole new level with much more complex exploration of the crime underworld in The Raid's lunatic parallel Indonesia in which the criminals would rather use martial arts and DIY tools than a bullet to the head.

Yeah you'd have a real hard time escaping the whole Marvel superhero thing this decade, and for the most part they're pretty good fun but being a comic book nerd growing up a lot of the movies didn't really live up to the awesomeness of those comics. And sometimes they get things right...my expectations weren't that great, a Racoon with a BFG and a tree guy who says nothing but "I am Groot"!? Batista doing something that didn't involve power bombing people through tables!? This was gonna be Marvel's first flop, right? Yeah they blew that out of the water, a wonderful movie with warmth, humour and heart that owes as much debt to the likes of the brilliant Firefly and anime classic Cowboy Bebop as it does its source material.

My other favourite superhero movie of this comic book adaptation heavy decade was the final part in a trilogy that I enjoyed from the beginning. Being a Memento fan back in the day I was pretty excited that Christopher Nolan was taking on Bats but I had no clue he'd knock the ball out of the park the way he did with three such high quality movies. So epic and such good fun.

Source Code (2011)

I thoroughly enjoyed Source Code, for me it got that right balance of what a Sci-fi flick should be, it provided a clever idea (in this case a spin on the Groundhog Day formula) but never got lost in flab of its own self-importance and outstayed its welcome (unlike a whole bunch of other movies released this decade), sure it has a certain amount of escapist cinemtic sparkle to it but its exploration of tragedy and most importantly hear is what really hooked me.

Do not fuck with Rama. C'mon there isn't a badder m'fucker in the whole of 21st Century action cinema, Statham would get eaten alive by this guy. Childish argument? Of course...The Raid is pulsating, bone snapping, ultra-violent brilliance.

A subtle, atmospheric, ambiguous, melancholic ode to the Spielbergian sci-fi films of the 80's that went down with the general public like a wet fart. But hey there has to be some Joe Schmo on the planet who loved it, didn't there? Yup, that's me, right here, here I am, I'm waving not drowning! But seriously I think that it's quite sad that such a beautiful piece of work was such a flop, yeah I get why a lot of people didn't like it but my hope is that it's discovered by a lot more weirdo's like me and reaches cult status, it certainly deserves it.

Look into the greatest boxing matches of all time and your gonna find 'Irish' Micky Ward and Aturo Gatti's legendary light welterweight trilogy in there. Being admittedly a fairly casual boxing fan I knew very little about Ward outside of those but this brilliant sports movie definitely provided that in spades. For me the actual boxing scenes were not a patch on Raging Bull but it was the story in between that I really loved and for me was more of an enjoyable movie, the fact that Wahlberg's Ward and Bale's Dicky Eckland (Ward's half-brother and trainer) were so much more likable than De-Niro's La Motta helped a great deal with that. Again as a Brit working class guy I like to see the blue collar side of American life and that was great. Now how's about a Gatti movie O. Russell?

When I was younger I was never that fond of Westerns, outside of perhaps the Dollars trilogy. But as I get older I must admit I'm becoming more and more partial to the genre. Being a philistine I have neither read the source novel nor seen the original film but I enjoyed this Cohen bros remake a great deal, finding the characters quite brilliant and the story both charming and bittersweet.

Not necessarily the most popular films, nor the most critically acclaimed but the ones I enjoyed the most.
