My Favorite Films Never Made

Sort by: Showing 10 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
Megalopolis directed by Francis Ford Coppola

It was supposed to be a sci-fi film that is set in the near future of New York City with an Ayn Rand vibe to it. What killed the project was 9/11. If it weren't for that world-changing event, it would have been a masterpiece like The Godfather: Part I & II, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now.

As of 4/4/19, this passion project will finally get made. If pre-production goes smoothly, it'll likely be released in 2021 or 2022.

The Crusades directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger

A Crusader movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Total Recall), and possibly composed by Basil Poledouris (Conan the Barbarian, Robocop, The Hunt for Red October)? That would have been friggin' awesome and epic (no pun intended)! Instead, we got Cutthroat Island and Showgirls. BIG FAIL!

Return of the Jedi directed by David Lynch or David Cronenberg

Things would have been a lot different if either one ever happened. Boba Fett's defeat would have been less anti-climatic, the Ewoks would have looked less like teddy bears or less cutesy, and the movie would be less kid-friendly and maybe more in tone of The Empire Strikes Back, but without the cliffhanger ending. Hell, even Lynch or Cronenberg would have talked George Lucas over, regarding the Special Editions. It perhaps wouldn't exist or both versions would exist in one DVD/Blu-ray package, and people would be more kind to Lucas.

A two-part Hobbit films directed by Guillermo del Toro

Not only it would be less bloated, but also the character Tauriel wouldn't be there or could have been better developed. It's worth mentioning that director Peter Jackson and actress Evangeline Lily were not too fond of her, but the execs demanded it.

Even Guillermo del Toro would have been one step closer of getting At the Mountains of Madness made if he remained on board in directing.

Indiana Jones and the City of Gods directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Frank Darabont

From what I hear, the script is way better than what we got. But George Lucas didn't like it. That's another sign that he has sure lost his mind and artistic touch.

Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead directed by Michael Cimino

That never came to realization due to troubled production of Heaven's Gate, which also bombed at the box office and was panned by film critics at the time. Cimino could have been the next Francis Ford Coppola if the production went more smoothly and if it weren't for his big obsession with perfectionism.

Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban directed by Chris Columbus

Alfronso Cauron is a better director than Chris Columbus, though. For someone that has read the books, Columbus would have adapted it better. If you look at the first two movies, you can tell he's very passionate about and gave them a Goonies vibe to them, which he wrote. Also, there some scenes that would have been less rushed or ran a bit longer. It could have been sort of a solid trilogy before things get real dark if Columbus remained in the director's chair.

A one part Mockingjay film directed by Francis Lawrence

Both parts are solid movies. But it would have been right up with Catching Fire if it was just one movie. Lionsgate got too greedy and thought each part would make more money than the last like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But that backfired and so did The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which suffered worse and underwhelmed at the box office. Its follow-up was canceled as a result.

Star Wars: Episode I directed by Robert Zemeckis or Ron Howard

This is what George Lucas should have done with the Prequel Trilogy to begin with. Have him be the executive producer and have someone else do the directing and writing, since he's poor at both things. If he had more patience of finding the right crew, then his reputation as a filmmaker would have been more favorable. Other directors like Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element) and Alex Proyer (The Crow, Dark City) would have been suitable of making a Star Wars movie.

Also, Jar Jar Binks would have been less annoying and more likable. Especially if he's played by Michael Jackson, who wanted to play him. But as long as he doesn't give a forced music number like "Jedi Rocks", I would be okay with that. At least his voice wouldn't sound as obnoxious. If the Sith Lord theory is true, then he would made him more cool and badass (Jar Jar's the key to all of this). It also would have been a hell of a twist if it was revealed in Episode II, as it parallels Empire Strikes Back (It's like poetry, they rhyme). That didn't happened because George Lucas thought that Jackson would get more attention than the movie itself. Plus, that was when he was still being ridiculed as a child molester.

Honorable Mentions

These movies might get made, but with different filmmakers.

Napoleon directed by Stanley Kubrick

It's going to be produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) that'll be based on Stanley Kubrick's screenplay. That's a very good sign, but there hasn't been any major news of it as of 7/10/2017.

These are the movies that were once in consideration, but never saw the light of day. Although there are some that I added just for fun.

Suggestions are welcome.

For movies that I do hope will get made, but not on the cards right now, check out this:
