My favorite Feuillade films

My favorites

All five episodes of Fantômas are hands down the most captivating films that Feuillade can offer, even though his later films are technically superior.

Fantômas was also first Feuillade film I ever saw...

...and it was love at first sight!

Judex is not only Feuillade's coolest character, he's also one of the coolest characters of the silent film era. Also, in the end Judex is not quite the justifier one expected.

The problem with Judex the film is that it marks the changes in tone: the beginning is reminiscent of Fantomas or Les Vampires but the latter half of the film is all about love, family, forgiveness and doing the right thing.

René Cresté is the perfect Judex, and Marcel Lévesque is at times quite lovely (especially when compared to his character is Les Vampires, but also because his fiancée in the film is a gorgeous action heroine). René Poyen and Olinda Mano provide lots of kissing. Oddly Musidora seems to overact a bit at times.

It took me a while to really appreciate Les Vampires as it was much different than I expected. Now it's like a good friend.

The best thing about Les Vampires is probably that it has everything, from suspense and jokey scenes to spectres and eavesdropping. Gorgeous Musidora and cute Edouard Mathé are in it too. Marcel Lévesque is quite annoying at first but you'll get used to his character. Fernand Herrmann and Louis Leubas are both amazing in Les Vampires - everything considered, Leubas is one of Feuillade's best actors.

Vendémiaire (1918)
Vendémiaire is beautiful, though I guess some of the themes are a bit pompous in an old-fashioned way. WWI films made at the time are extremely interesting. The film is quite poetic, at times a bit harsh, and rather natural.

René Cresté is effortlessly beautiful, and it's great to see him like this, as Judex was obviously a role that left him quite typecast. Ed. Mathé doesn't seem at home with his role as a blind captain (perhaps because Mathé never went to war) and Biscot is a bit annoying as a wandering entertainer.

Tih Minh (1918)
In Tih-Minh the women are in general quite helpless (with the exception of the gorgeous Jane Rollette!), hypnotized and passive. They're not allowed to venture with the men. So there's stuff about Tih-Minh that I don't like, and some things I don't believe fit into Feuillade films but in the end it's still very entertaining and looks great. Biscot sort of replaces Lévesque as a comic relief here, and does a great job. I'm very glad Tih-Minh wasn't the first Feuillade film I saw.

A nice comedy with Musidora and Marcel Levesque, with Levesque's character trying to cheat Musidora into thinking he's a great catburglar.

The story is quite simple but film looks beautiful and the child actors are excellent.

Barrabas (1919)
I'm surprised I didn't like Barrabas more. The first episodes were quite boring but the film moved into better direction in the middle. Some scenes in the final episodes were amazing, gorgeously beautiful scenery and light.

The best actor/actress in the film? Jane Rollette. She stole every scene she was in. Effortlessly charming and very natural talent.

Some of the jokes were a bit dull or sexist even. Yes, Biscot is cute but it's not enough.

I loved the hotel bedroom scene with Ed. Mathé and Jane Rollette. All in all Jane is awesome in most Feuillade films.
