The Firm (1993)

"Did I lose you?"
"You look tired."
"Did I?"
"I've loved you all my life. Even before we met. Part of it wasn't even you. It was just a promise of you. But these last days... You kept your promise. How could you lose me?"

Well, that's another Grisham book/movie to cross off the list. I'm just going to cut to the chase and say that The Firm was a step down from the book A Time To Kill. It was good and suspenseful and all, but it took a while to get going and it just felt weak in comparison to A Time To Kill. This is another one of those cases where I prefer the movie over the book. Even though the movie does feel a bit too long at times and a couple scenes drag out, it's not too big of a problem as the book itself was pretty long and it was able to keep me interested most of the time. The casting was well done and actors like Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Jeanne Triplehorn as the hot wife, Wilford Brimley, Ed Harris and Gary Busey when he was still a respectable actor. It had a lot of twists and it was overall a very fun thrill ride that worked better as a film than it did as a book.

Blitz (2011)
April 3

"You're not supposed to smoke in here."
"What are you going to do, shoot me?"

While there really isn't a whole lot that's wrong with this film, but it thinks that it's much more cooler and much more intelligent that it really is. It tries too hard to emulate the style of Guy Ritchie's movies and a ton of British crime movies, but in the end it's just a generic Statham movie. Now that isn't too say that I haven't enjoyed other movies standard Jason Statham fare because I have, but those movies knew what they wanted to be and they wanted to be standard action movies, so it's easier for me to take those movies for what they are. Now this movie is entertaining at times I'll give it that, but the story and dialogue really could've been improved and it's just a movie that exists for the sole purpose of doing so.

"I don't want my daughters growing up entitled and spoiled. And I agree with my father - you give your children enough money to do something but not enough to do nothing."

Just like Nebraska this is another Alexander Payne film that failed to engage me, although this one is better than the latter movie. This one did have it's moments of greatness and it is funny at times, but I found myself caring more for the kids than I did for George Clooney's character who I didn't really like that much. Nothing wrong with his performance, but I just didn't like his attitude. I did really like Shailene Woodley in this movie though and it's the only time she delivered a good performance as the other movies I had seen her in didn't do a good job of showing me her capabilities as an actress and I think the more and more the media hypes her up is when she will become even more overrated that she is now. I really think that there's a great movie inside and that great movie is trying to claw out of the screen and show it's true colors, but it's trapped like a bird inside a huge stadium. I'm starting to think that Alexander Payne just lost his true touch after Sideways (Which is his best movie.) and is just not the director he once was. It's a decent movie, but in the end it didn't have that much of an impact on me.

"But we didn't see anything that looked the same and we could have just Gerried off in all these different directions."
"Yeah, but we could have bailed early, you know, we could have just bai... we ma... we... I mean, there were so many just different Gerries along the way..."

*Sigh* I never learn my lesson with these kind of movies do I? I hate movies where nothing of substance happens, but somehow I keep watching them anyways. The only reason I watched this is because Gus Van Sant directed it and I have a lot of respect for him as a director. While his most famous movie Good Will Hunting is overrated, he's made movies that can be pretty amazing and most of the time he can pull off movies with minimal dialogue very well. Like Elephant which was a very fascinating movie on what was originally a typical school day. In this movie though the minimal dialogue hurts the movie more than it helps it. It's just Casey Affleck and Matt Damon walking in a desert for 90 fucking minutes and there is nothing artistic about it, nothing interesting about it and nothing even good about it. Well, the cinematography was good, but I give the weather the credit for that as I do not want to associate it with the actual movie. Cinematography alone doesn't make a good movie anyways, so the only positive with this movie doesn't change anything. There are scenes that drag on and on like Affleck and Damon walking for what feels like 10 minutes and see the picture I used for this movie? The movie stays on that shot for 2-3 minutes! See why most movies don't use the real time style of filmmaking? Because a key part of movies is that they are life with the boring parts cut out, but this movie just disobeys that rule like a troubled teenager. This movie actually reminds me of that Breaking Bad episode where Walter White and Jesse are stuck in the desert due to their van breaking down, but the difference with that episode and this movie is that they knew how to keep the scenario interesting and it had much more dialogue which played a huge part in what made that episode work. That episode of Breaking Bad is this movie done right.

This movie is a big fat waste of space and a waste of time. I actually stared at a wall near the course of 90 minutes years ago and I would even go far to say that I had more fun doing that than I did watching this movie. I refuse to even acknowledge it as a movie because all it's just Casey Affleck and Matt Damon walking in the desert and Gus Van Sant wanting to get paid for it. These two actors must be the only thing on the movie's budget as I can't see how else this movie would've had a budget of 3 million dollars. Do not watch this movie! Even if you like Van Sant's work, skip this movie. The only reason I can even recommend it is if you're someone who has a crush on the two leading actors and want to stare at them for 90 minutes. Even then there are more productive ways of doing so.

"I'd forgive you if you were crazy, but you're not. You're weak."

This movie has caught my eye on numerous occasions, so now I decided to finally watch it. Coincidentally this is the second movie on the same day that has minimal dialogue. The only difference with this movie is that it has a lot of other things going for it. It's a very simple, yet very compelling revenge film that's pretty close to reality and some people have compared this to Blood Simple and I can actually see the connection with that film. It falls short on being a great movie, but it's still a really well-made film and it's worth checking out if you have Netflix.

"When life throws you dick you make dick-ade!"
"Dick-ade doesn't sound like a significant improvement over dick."

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later, but this is the first time I saw a movie in theatres that I didn't like since Aliens in the Attic. I mean I guess Iron Man 3 was the last movie I saw in theatres that I kind of felt ripped off by, but that was somewhere in the middle. I didn't like that movie nor did I dislike it. In this case though I just did not like this movie at all. Now I should start off by saying that I can't stand Kevin Hart. I think he is a very annoying guy who seems to rely on the same kind of loud humor that his career is built off of. This however was the only Kevin Hart movie I have anticipated in my life because I actually thought that him and Will Ferrell could make a good team and if it wasn't for his involvement in the movie, then I wouldn't have much interest in this movie. Now this is one of those cases with the advertising being much funnier that the actual movie as this movie just wasn't as funny as it should've been. I mean it did have some very funny jokes every now and then, but there were many points in the movie where there should be jokes, but they just weren't there. We get this one very awkward scene where Will Ferrell tries to give oral sex just to prepare himself for the horrors of prison, but it's portrayed in such an unfunny way and I don't know how they could've made that scene funny. Also it seems like this movie is trying to be a satire at times, but it's just too by the numbers. I could also see myself predicting how the conflict was going to be resolved and this wouldn't be that big of a problem is this movie was consistently funny. This movie just wasn't worth the extra money to see in theatres and if you still want to see this movie despite what I've said then wait for it to hit Redbox or on demand. Do not make the same mistake I did by seeing it in theatres and this will certainly be the last time I'm seeing a Kevin Hart film in theatres.

The Drop (2014)
April 5

"There are some sins that you commit that you can't come back from, you know, no matter how hard you try. You just can't. It's like the devil is waiting for your body to quit. Because he knows, he knows that he already owns your soul. And then I think maybe there's no devil. You die... and God, he says, Nah, nah you can't come in. You have to leave now. You have to leave and go away and you have to be alone. You have to be alone forever."

I was kind of expecting more from this movie and I feel like it didn't deliver that much story-wise, but it's still a pretty good movie due to Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini's performance and it's good to see that the last movie he was in is a good one. Like I said, this movie isn't so great story-wise, but it still has a ton of stuff going for it.

"This time next week, I'll be sucking down piña coladas in a hot tub with six girls named Amber and Tiffany."
"More like taking a shower with two guys named Jamal and Jesus, if you know what I mean. And here's the bad news: that thing you're sucking on? It's not a piña colada!"

This one is another one of these "Why the hell didn't I see this earlier" kind of movies. This was a very refreshing take on the whole heist movie and the cast is also what makes this movie shine like Clive Owen as the bad guy. It also has a ton of clever dialogue and a good number of plot twists. I was so close to giving this movie a perfect score as it had all the ingredients to be a masterpiece of the heist film genre, but the ending was too disappointing for me to do so. For a movie that had so much going on, the payoff was pretty weak. It just wasn't that good of a twist and the whole tone of the ending was a bit too upbeat. With that said it's still a great movie, but the ending is what keeps it from being perfect.

Re-watch

"So, what do we do now?"
"We could hug?"
"Yeah, you'd like that, you faggot!... I'm sorry, I'm new to this."

I had the urge to watch a Will Ferrell movie that was actually funny ever since I watched that mediocre excuse for a comedy that was Get Hard and the movie that came to mind was Step Brothers. Now this is my second time watching this and while I'd say it's even more stupider and ridiculous than I remembered, but it still manages to make me laugh and I think I laughed more this time than I did last time. If that doesn't make a good comedy then I don't know what does.

"Know what we used to call you Peter? The November Man. Cause after you passed through, nothing lived. You were one bleak motherfucker my friend."

All I can say about this movie is yawn. Wow, this was pretty boring to sit through. Beyond that this movie didn't know if it wanted to be a serious spy movie or not and the pacing in this movie was all over the place. This could've been an entertaining movie, but it is just a very dull spy movie and it is one of the more disposable movies of 2014.

This was a really underrated and very darkly funny movie. Christopher Walken unsurprisingly carries this movie very well and I just really enjoyed watching it from start to finish. It's a really underrated movie and it's too bad it's not talked about that often.

"Or you can get this damn train moving and get us the hell out of here."
"Thought you'd never ask."
"Charlie, when this is over with, remind me to knock you out."

I actually wasn't sure if I thought this was a good movie or an OK movie at first, but as soon as it ended I decided that it was a good movie. I mean it's not trying to be anything that it isn't and it's decent entertainment. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson are just as good as a team as they were in White Men Can't Jump and it did have it's share of funny moments. It's an enjoyable ride and that's all I was expecting from this movie.

"All the time. The guy is a fucking coke head. He's up to his neck in this shit."
"All right, who's John Holmes?"
"The porn king. Sam, the guy's a legend."
"Never heard of him."

This is another underrated gem that is better than it's credited for. It had a compelling true story, some very good characters and some pretty good acting most notably Val Kilmer's performance which just shows how underestimated of an actor he really is. It was a very good movie and it's far from being as bad as the critics made it out to be.

"How do you do this?"
"I try to find something to love in everybody. Even if it's a small thing. Something about the way someone smiles. There's always something, there has to be. I try to make myself generous. I do things I don't want to do. I... I think about what not to criticize. And the strangest things come back to me."
"Like?"
"You."
"Me?"
"Yeah. Yeah people like you walk into my life."

You know what's so damn frustrating about this movie? It's that it was so close to being a good movie. The first two acts were very solid and it was able to keep my interest with a decent story and the obvious parts like Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore making out. What kills this movie for me is the third act which is when the movie started to get ridiculous. From that point the movie decided it should be a thriller even though there was no suspense beforehand and that's when the movie falls apart. Not to mention that the twist in this movie was predictable. I also hated the ending and not since That Was Then, This Is Now has an ending completely ruined a movie for me. If it wasn't for that ridiculous third act, this movie would've been an 8/10, but because of it this just isn't a good movie anymore.

I wasn't sure what I was going to think about this movie at first as it's written by the same guy who did that other Elmore Leonard adaptation Out of Sight which I didn't care for that much. Fortunately, this movie was much better as it had a really good cast, some humorous dialogue and an overall really interesting plot. It's a highly enjoyable movie and I'm a little surprised I didn't watch this earlier.

"I read somewhere how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong... but to feel strong."

This is another one of these movies where I don't understand the amount of praise it gets. For some reason it has an 8.2 on IMDB and is even in their top 250 films which is baffling as I can think of many other movies that deserve to be in that list more than this one does. It's just a very weak movie with lack of character development and lackluster writing. The main character is probably my biggest problem with the movie because he is just so damn pretentious. Hell, he is so pretentious that he makes Ricky Fitts from American Beauty look like a fucking genius. I mean there's this one scene where he symbolizes an apple for Christ sakes. Now I like Emile Hirsch, but I hate that this is the movie he is known for. He's been in movies that are much better than this one. Now there are some good things about this movie like the acting which is fine for the most part, the cinematography which looked really nice and the soundtrack with Eddie Vedder which is probably the best thing about the movie. It's a very overrated movie and I just don't understand the praise it gets.

Meh, I wasn't really feeling this one like I was with the first movie. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still good and Vincent Cassell is still great as Mesrine, but it just feels inconsistent and unfocused compared to the first movie which was a really well-done crime movie and the storytelling was just much better in that movie. This really wasn't that good of a movie. Besides the script being average at best, the pairing of Jim Belushi and Tupac just didn't work. I mean I just couldn't take Belushi seriously as an actor at all and he just isn't cut out for serious roles. This movie officially tops Fast Five at being the best movie in the series. The best way that I can describe this movie is that it's non-stop action. It's definitely the most exciting movie of the series and all the actors really look like they had fun being in this movie. It also had it's share of funny lines and the new additions to the cast like Jason Statham and Kurt Russell really added to the movie especially the latter who pretty much steals the show. The tribute to Paul Walker was also really well done and it was the perfect way to end the movie. It's still a little overhyped and it's not even close to being the amazing film everyone else makes it out to be, but it's still a really well-made film that tells a decent story and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't invested in it. Now last month I confessed that I just couldn't stand Birdman, but I still acknowledged that Alejandro González Iñárritu is a really talented filmmaker. Birdman was just a gimmick that isn't even groundbreaking as the whole one-take thing has been done before. This movie on the other hand is a fantastic emotional powerhouse. It's got great characters, phenomenal storytelling and it's just a perfect movie from start to finish.

Definitely better than the first one. While it still has its few bad segments, the worst ones in this movie aren't even that bad unlike the first one and there's more good segments than there are bad ones.

"Remember when you was a kid and you would spend the whole year waiting for summer vacation and when it finally came it would fly by just like that? It's funny, Jimmy, life has a way of flying by faster than any old summer vacation really fucking does."

Even though I didn't really feel like watching a movie, I just did anyways because I just wanted to end the month on a better note that ABCs Of Death 2 which I don't think anyone would blame me on that. So, I decided to go with this one and I really hate how the critics just wrote this movie off as a Tarantino rip-off when it is so much more than that. It is certainly one of the more inventive Tarantino-esque films with great dialogue, lots of interesting ideas and great characters especially the odd ones like a crippled Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi as a hitman named Mr. Shhh. This was just a really fun movie and it was just a really good one to end the month on.
