Gorgeously lighted coming-of-age film chock-full of old music and '50s nostalgia. Reminded me a lot of The Spirit of the Beehive, but similarly to that film, left me kind of cold emotionally, unfortunately.

Pretty alright FedEx commercial considering that Tom Hanks is one of the few actors I actually dislike and that it has no right to last more than two hours.

Once you've seen about three Kaurismäki films, you pretty much know what to expect: approximately 3.5 stars. Kaurismäki seems to get less subtle as he gets older, but this is still pretty sweet.

The only one of the Big Four of Vietnam War films I hadn't seen; I guess because I had a hunch it would be as mediocre it was. The message of the movie is that USA would've won the war if Willem Dafoe was sent to fight it alone.

Christian Bale, the Dark Knight of Cups, visits rich people's cribs and walks around the beautiful wilderness, looking equally worried everywhere he goes. I'm almost as worried for my inevitable re-watch of Tree of Life which I held in very high regard back in 2011: did Malick's style actually work better there or have I just grown tired of it altogether?

Kurosawa was amazing with colours (too) and Tatsuya Nakadai is always awesome, but this film is way too long. Also kind of lost track of who is who and what their motives are at some point but that's more a problem of my stupidity.

The film begins very strongly: the Transylvania scenes have a really nice atmosphere and beautiful gothic images. Skipping the mindnumbingly boring sea voyage section, I was expecting to like this more than Murnau's Nosferatu, but then the second is unfortunately drawn-out and uninteresting, what with Van Helsing & co. explaining all things related to the plot and vampire mythology in general. A commendable effort, in any case.
P.S. A friend of mine advised me not to watch the film with Philip Glass' score. I gave that a quick shot, since that was included as an extra on my DVD, and it seems like it completely butchers the film's atmosphere. So yeah, I would probably not recommend that.

Samasta syystä suurin osa stand-up-komiikasta on mielestäni yhdentekevää.

To be commended for evoking claustrophobia extremely successfully; I almost wish the entire film was focused on that, instead of the cave-dwellers who are a tad lame in the end. The action scenes could've been directed better, and I found the characters pretty annoying. Nevertheless, this film has a cool premise and I think it succeeds pretty well as a genuinely thrilling horror film.
