Antichrist (2009)
Very eerie, disturbing movie directed by Lars Von Trier (after he just got out of a mental hospital for depression) about a grief-stricken mother and her therapist husband. After the tragic death of their toddler son Nick, a professional couple retreat to their sylvan cabin, "Eden". There, the woman becomes increasingly haunted by something which appears to be demonic, but might actually simply be the demons of her own mind.

Incredibly disturbing movie. Watched May 2014

So-so life-time movie about a mother being abused by her out of control teenage son. Nothing special, but entertaining enough if you like real-life life-time dramas about people whose lives have gone to Hell.

Dark Shadows (2012)
Classic Tim Burton tale full of whimsy and absurdity about a vampire named Barnabas Collins who is dug up in 1972, after spending nearly 200 years underground because of the actions of a vengeful would-be lover (and witch) named Angelique. Barnabas has to learn to deal with "modern" seventies life and risks loving a young woman named "Victoria", much to the growing rage of Angelique, now two-times spurned.

Evil Dead (2013)
Mediocre flick capitalizing on the success of the original Evil Dead. This movie was polished, not campy, and all the qualities (cheesy makeup, over-acting, grainy film, low-budget feel) that made the first movie such a hit were neglected.

Lex's rating:
Mawkish, emotionally manipulative tale about a socially awkward and obsessive 10 year old boy named Oskar who embarks on a quest to find the lock that matches a key found inside the remains of a broken blue vase inside his deceased father's closet 1 year after the 9-11 attacks. It is implied that Oskar suffers from Asperger's disorder (as well as possible OCD traits and he self-harms by pinching himself until he bruises) is the lead character in the movie, and while I wanted to like the portrayal, I didn't feel particularly moved by the acting, even though in theory I should be able to empathize with this character. The entire time I watching this, I couldn't get over how *much* it was trying to make me feel deep thoughts and marvel at the profundity of the script- even the image of Oskar on the front with his hands on his face just seems too posed for my taste.

Interesting documentary about the Mothman phenomena of Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Mothman's horror-filled romp around the small town between 1966-67. Includes information about Chief Cornstalk and the TNT area, and Mothman's relation to UFOs and the MIBs (Men in Black) but doesn't go into John Keel (who was a big presence in the town around that time and wrote The Mothman Prophecies.

The real-life story of Colton Burpo, a 4 year old who has a near death experience and sees heaven after his appendix ruptures. Colton's experiences test the faith and resilience of his pastor father, his mother and sister, and the community at large. Mediocre, maudlin acting.

Lucid (2005)
So-so movie about a 32 year old psychotherapist working with a group of PTSD sufferers who claims Winnipeg is "shrinking" and that there are "repeaters". He spends his evenings drawing black sheep on the wall and replying his last message from his wife, a woman who wants nothing to do with him after she caught him cheating in their Gimli cabin.

Mac and Me (1988)
Fairly well-done life-time movie about the disturbing life of spree killer "Laurie Wade" (in real life, Laurie Dann) who killed 1 boy and wounded 2 girls and 3 boys at an Elementary school in Winnetka, Illionois on May 20th, 1988. Laurie suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and psychotic behaviour, but the real extent of her problems was ever understood by psychiatrists. Watching this movie, I began to wonder if she was possessed, she was so incredibly tormented and her behavior was so bizarre (yet oddly stable and manipulative). There are just so many disturbing elements to the movie, but it was well done, especially for a made-for-tv movie. Definitely one of the better-made-for-tv movies I have seen.

Extremely disappointing and boring "found footage" movie about a young couple besieged by paranormal, potentially demonic activity.

Lex's rating:
Visually stunning and beautifully acted story of a young man named Jean-Baptiste Grenouille who is born with am almost supernatural sense of smell (hyperosmia). Grenouille, abandoned by his mother at birth, is unable to bond to others and becomes obsessed with his desire to preserve "every scent", namely, the scents of young women. In order to accomplish this task, dark deeds are performed.

Sinister (2012)
Eerie tale about a 30-something writer named Ellison Oswalt who moves to a home where a family- minus one missing daughter- was hanged from a tree in the backyard. Ellison's son begins to have night terrors (which he had in the past but which apparently were diminishing before the move) and Ellison discovers mysterious super 8 film of various murders stretching back to 1966, all including families murdered in violent ways, filmed, with one child missing and never accounted for. And something else... all the murders include the image of the mysterious "Mr. Boogie" (Bughuul), a Babylonian demon said to "eat children".

Completely cheesy sequel to the first sleepaway camp. A bright-eyed camp counselor named Angela (played by Pamela Springsteen) loves camp and "weeding out the bad" at Camp Rolling Hills.

This leaves where Sleepaway Camp 2 leaves off. Angela is back! After running over a shaggy-haired New York teen and assuming her identity, Angela is back to camp (this time calling herself "Maria"). Ridiculous but enjoyable horror slasher. It is what it is...

Tekkonkinkreet is an amazing animated tale from Japan about two brothers; jaded, protective "Black"(Kuro) (who I'd guess is supposed to be anywhere from 14-16 years of age) and almost-11-year old "White" (Shiro) (who acts more like a 3-year-old and is innocent and "uncorrupted"). The brothers live in Treasure Town (a labyrinthine metropolis in Japan) as street urchins (with amazing parkour skills...including, it would seem, the ability to almost-fly) and battle Yakuza mob bosses and unsavory Golem-like beings controlled by an Aryan fellow who I am pretty sure is demon possessed.

The attention to detail in this movie is stunning. Definitely worth a view just to check out the gorgeous art work! Beautiful!

Creepy "found footage" film done in the style of "The Blair Witch Project" about two documentary film makers- Aaron and Jim- who delve head-long into the world of conspiracy theories after a conspiracy theorist they are taping named Terrence goes "missing". Jim and Aaron attempt to sneak into a secret "Tarsus Club" meeting and get the rituals on film for their documentary, but what happens next suggests that something far more sinister than either of them predicted is waiting for them in the woods.

Interesting plot about a late 20-something doctor, a new resident, who seeks respect and admiration and begins to intentionally compromise the care of an 18 year old girl so that she will stay in the hospital and talk with him and feed his ego (and his growing mental illness). This movie could have been a little more chilling with some writing tweaks and close calls and maybe some insight into why the good doctor engages in Munchausen by proxy (a childhood memory explaining his need for attention and admiration)?

The Room (2003)
Utterly hilarious movie about a gullible man named Johnny who is "betrayed" by his manipulative fiance Lisa. Some have postulated that the director and main star Tommy Wiseau, who totally self-financed this "movie", might have asperger's as his character, Johnny, doesn't seem to understand subtlety or nuances or have much empathy and everyone behaves in a stilted, odd manner. This movie was just... so bad. So bad, that it is worth a watch, especially with other people so you can stare at the scenes unfolding with your mouth open.
