I consider myself a bit of a completionist, but I don't have the time or energy to do the research to make sure I'm reading these comics in order of events. This guy has gone WAY above and beyond the call of duty and has rounded up some help to do exactly that. He's separated the Marvel Universe into a massive timeline with everything and an "Essentials" reading list. What I've included here is from the Essentials list as far as I've read, for the COMPLETE list, check out his site. Trust me, it's worth the trip.
