Burn My Eyes - Machine Head

Released: August 9, 1994

1. Davidian 10/10
2. Old 9/10
3. A Thousand Lies 8.5/10
4. None But My Own 8/10
5. The Rage to Overcome 8.5/10
6. Death Church 7.5/10
7. A Nation on Fire 9/10
8. Blood for Blood 8.5/10
9. I'm Your God Now 9/10
10. Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies 8/10
11. Block 8.5/10

Best Tracks: Davidian, A Nation On Fire, Old, I'm Your God Now

Worst Track: Death Church

Conclusion: An incredible debut and stands with 'A Vulgar Display Of Power' as the greatest groove metal album of all time. Unlike what was to come in the latter half of the 90's from MH Burn My Eyes is utterly uncompromising, you can hear all those influences Flynn talks about like Ministry and Neurosis, hell even the gangster rap influences work, marrying that world's urban decay themes into metal rather than silly the nu-metal dramatics that would come later on. Burn My Eyes is still one of the greatest metal debuts of all time and a classic of the genre.

The Blackening - Machine Head

Released: March 27, 2007

1. Clenching the Fists of Dissent 8.5/10
2. Beautiful Mourning 8/10
3. Aesthetics of Hate 8.5/10
4. Now I Lay Thee Down 8.5/10
5. Slanderous 7.5/10
6. Halo 9.5/10
7. Wolves 7/10
8. A Farewell to Arms 8/10

Best Tracks: Halo, Clenching the Fists of Dissent, Now I lay Thee Down, Aesthetics of Hate

Worst Track: Wolves

Conclusion: Holy shit, those duelling guitar melodies! honestly that's the highlight of The Blackening for me, they've never sounded better. There's a lot going here and its clear there's a significant injection of fire and imagination into the entire process. Despite Robb's subtly delusional desire to take the band into other directions throughout the years its clear they are far better suited as an angry groove/thrash metal band that appeals to the pissed off 15 year old lad in us all.

Unto the Locust - Machine Head

Released: September 27, 2011

1. I Am Hell (Sonata in C#)
I: Sangre Sani (Blood Saint)
II: I Am Hell
III: Ashes to the Sky 8/10
2. Be Still and Know 8.5/10
3. Locust 8/10
4. This Is the End 8/10
5. Darkness Within 8.5/10
6. Pearls Before the Swine 7.5/10
7. Who We Are 7/10

Best Tracks: Darkness Within, Be Still and Know, I am Hell

Worst Track: Who We Are

Conclusion: After a 4 year hiatus Machine Head returned with this extremely impressive follow up to The Blackening, with the same progressive and melodic elements that made that album so monumental.

The More Things Change... - Machine Head

Released: March 26, 1997

1. Ten Ton Hammer 8.5/10
2. Take My Scars 8/10
3. Struck a Nerve 8/10
4. Down to None 7.5/10
5. The Frontlines 7.5/10
6. Spine 7.5/10
7. Bay of Pigs 7/10

9. Blistering 7.5/10
10. Blood of the Zodiac 8/10

Best Tracks: Ten Ton Hammer, Take My Scars, Struck A Nerve, Violate

Worst Track: Bay Of Pigs

Conclusion: A solid sophomore effort, after Struck A Nerve tracks are in danger of falling into the unimaginative filler trap at times but are saved from banality with excellent instrumental moments and legitimate fire and aggression.

Release Date: December 16, 2003

1. Imperium 7.5/10
2. Bite the Bullet 7/10
3. Left Unfinished 7/10
4. Elegy 8/10
5. In the Presence of My Enemies 8/10
6. Days Turn Blue to Gray 7.5/10
7. Vim 6.5/10
8. Seasons Wither 7.5/10
9. All Falls Down 7/10
10. Wipe the Tears 7/10
11. Descend the Shades of Night 8/10

Best Tracks: Descend the Shades of Night, Elegy, In The Presence Of My Enemies

Worst Track: Vim

Conclusion: While The melodic aspects of Flynn's are much improved for me his aggressive stylings get in the way of my enjoyment on this album somewhat, I want more instrumental passages or melodic singing and less of his incessant roar, but that's just where my tastes have gone I guess, I like more of the prog-metal approach where the music can breathe. There's still a lot to like here though, and its a significant improvement over Supercharger to be sure.

Bloodstone & Diamonds - Machine Head

Released: November 7, 2014

1. Now We Die 7.5/10
2. Killers & Kings 7/10
3. Ghosts Will Haunt My Bones 7/10
4. Night of Long Knives 7/10
5. Sail into the Black 8/10
6. Eyes of the Dead 6.5/10
7. Beneath the Silt 7.5/10
8. In Comes the Flood 7.5/10
9. Damage Inside 6.5/10
10. Game Over 6/10
11. Imaginal Cells 6.5/10
12. Take Me Through the Fire 6/10

Best Track: Sail Into The Black

Worst Track: Game Over

Conclusion: The material definitely sounds a bit more forced this time around, lacks the organic metallic quality of the previous two albums (The Blackening and Unto The Locust), hell it's a bit whiny at times but there's still a lot to like here, even if its patchy. It gets particularly interesting on Sail into the Black, adding much needed shades and experimentation to the process. But heck as long as Flynn isn't rapping again I'd be happy, I mean Flynn won't be rapping again, not in the 2010's right? right? Onto the next album...

...oh fuck.

The Burning Red - Machine Head

Released: July 27, 1999

1. Enter the Phoenix 8/10
2. Desire to Fire 6/10
3. Nothing Left 6/10
4. The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears 5.5/10
5. Silver 8/10
6. From This Day 6.5/10
7. Exhale the Vile 6/10
8. Message in a Bottle 7.5/10
9. Devil with the King's Card 5/10
10. I Defy 5.5/10
11. Five 6/10
12. The Burning Red 8/10

Best Tracks: The Burning Red, Silver, Enter The Phoenix

Worst Track: Devil with the King's Card

Conclusion: To be honest there are moments of genuine beauty on 'The Burning Red', with melodic passages that make you only wish Flynn had purely explored his Cure and melancholic alt-rock influence as opposed to just caving in to the dire rap/metal hybrid nonsense that was so en-vogue at the time, watered down riffs diminish things to banality and MC Flynn is less annoying than Fred Durst but that doesn't make his rapping that much more bearable.

Catharsis - Machine Head

Released: January 26, 2018

1. Volatile 6.5/10
2. Catharsis 6.5/10
3. Beyond the Pale 5.5/10
4. California Bleeding 6/10
5. Triple Beam 5.5/10
6. Kaleidoscope 5.5/10
7. Bastards 7/10
8. Hope Begets Hope 6/10
9. Screaming at the Sun 5/10
10. Behind a Mask 7/10
11. Heavy Lies the Crown 6.5/10
12. Psychotic 5/10
13. Grind You Down 6/10
14. Razorblade Smile 4.5/10
15. Eulogy 5.5/10

Best Tracks: Bastards, Behind a Mask

Worst Track: Screaming At The Sun

Conclusion: Musically speaking Catharsis isn't Supercharger terrible, it isn't St Anger bad despite the scathing reviews suggesting as such. Its just way off the greatness of The Blackening or Burn My Eyes and it's pretty clear Robb is bored of metal again. I mean yeah Bastards sounds a lot like the Dropkick Murphy's, but y'know what I kinda like it.

Supercharger - Machine Head

Released: October 2, 2001

1. Declaration 3.5/10
2. Bulldozer 6.5/10
3. White-Knuckle Blackout! 5/10
4. Crashing Around You 5/10
5. Kick You When You're Down 5/10
6. Only the Names 5.5/10
7. All in Your Head 5/10
8. American High 4/10
9. Brown Acid 3.5/10
10. Nausea 4/10
11. Blank Generation 3.5/10
12. Trephination 4.5/10
13. Deafening Silence 5/10
14. Supercharger 5.5/10

Best Track: Bulldozer

Worst Tracks: Blank Generation, Brown Acid, American High

Conclusion: By 2001 I'd moved pretty much left MH behind and was a fully fledged Tool and Neurosis obsessive delving further into progressive and extreme music (as well as a bunch darker alternative stuff) while MH were seemingly stuck in an altogether more creatively stunted direction. The reviews for Supercharger I read at the time didn't make me a particularly excited either, a confused mess seemed to be the general consensuses. And yeah, all these years later and actually listening to Supercharger for the first time I can't help but concur, a real low point for the band.

Around the age of 14 at the tail end of 1996 I became a huge MH fanboy, had the posters on my wall, wore the merch, saw the band live. My interest had waned considerably by the time they released the Nu-Metal flavoured 'Burning Red' and I didn't jump back on board until 2007's The Blackening. Here's a retrospective look at their back-catalogue and my opinion of their best to worst works.
