Black Pond (2011)
A strange man stumbles into the lives of an unhappily married middle class couple, with tragic, and hilarious results. Made for ยฃ25,000 and featuring the excellent Chris Langham.
countzer0's rating:
Skeletons (2010)
Quirky, inventive and heartwarming drama from Nick Whitfield. Nice photography of the Yorkshire setting.
countzer0's rating:
Down Terrace (2009)
Shot in 6 days for a budget of ยฃ6,000, this is the kitchen sink Sopranos. Hilarious and disturbing, you've never seen Julia Deakin like this.
countzer0's rating:
What do you do when you inherit ยฃ28,000? Do you put a deposit on a flat in Bracknell? Peter Strickland shot a beautiful revenge drama in Transylvania, on Super 16 no less.
countzer0's rating:
Archipelago (2011)
Tensions in a middle class family reach breaking point on holiday in the Scilly Isles. Uncomfortable to watch, but often very funny. Beautiful digital cinematography by Ed Rutherford.
countzer0's rating:
The Last Yellow (1999)
Mark Addy is a joy in this revenge goes wrong tale. Also featuring the great Samantha Morton in an early role.
countzer0's rating:
This Is Not a Love Song (2002)
The script was written in 2 weeks, they shot it on DV in 18 days in the beautiful Trossachs. A cracking little chase film with good characterisation. Budget: ยฃ300K.
countzer0's rating:
Crying with Laughter (2009)
Stephen McCole actually did stand-up gigs, writing his own material, to prep for this role. The plot seems outlandish until you find out it is based on Malcolm Shields' experiences.
countzer0's rating:
Summer (2008)
A powerful redemption tale of 2 friends doomed by the education system. Robert Carlyle is excellent in this.
countzer0's rating:
Tyrannosaur (2011)
Another bleak redemption story with two fearless performances by Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman. A must see.
countzer0's rating:
Taut, twisty, claustrophobic thriller. Atherton impresses.
countzer0's rating:
The Hide (2008)
The thriller pared down to the barest minimum: 2 men in a shack. Both actors are utterly compelling and there are many little moments of black English humour. Budget: ยฃ100K.
countzer0's rating:
Arnold's first feature reminds me a little of a Kieslowski. A nice humanistic tale of coming to terms with tragedy.
countzer0's rating:
Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
Meadows and Considine's revenge tale is utterly compelling, never glossing over the complexities and consequences of revenge. Made for ยฃ700K.
countzer0's rating:
Jobson's semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in an alcoholic family is powerful and personal.
countzer0's rating:
Interesting films made on a budget of less than $1m, in no particular order.
