Final Fantasy - Famicom and NES
My favourite cover for a game by a long shot, the original Final Fantasy for the NES was both simple yet complex and detailed at the same time, and the stark contrast and coloring make this a true work of art.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - PlayStation 2
Rockstar first started the multi-windowed cover that has become their trademark for the GTA series with GTA3, but it was Vice City, with its bikini girl, neon sign, guns & thugs and boy toys that will be remembered by all. Also, the GTA logo itself is possibly the best one out there.
Deus Ex - PC Games
The best sci-fi themed game cover, with its great logo and total sense of conspiracy and technology found within.
Ōkami - PlayStation 2
Japanese art at its purest. You just know the game will be equally beautiful with a cover like this.
Arx Fatalis - PC Games
Dungeon-crawling RPGs usually use sexy female warriors or dragons to sell copies, but Arx manages to blend sexiness, strength, mystery and sorcery into one female character on the cover, and the blood-soaked dagger is an incredibly nice touch too.
Prelude's rating:
Assassin's Creed - Director's Cut Edition - PC Games
The highly-textured and detailed central character is such great contrast to the faded crowd all around him. Gives impression he can blend in anywhere.
Prelude's rating:
Fallout 3 - Xbox 360
Brilliant logo, highly complex mask, and eye-catching green sepia shading. Great games sell themselves, but having a killer cover certainly helps too.
Super Mario Bros. 3 - Famicom and NES
Yes, it is possibly the simplest cover on this list. It's also the most yellow. But I bet it's also the most recognizable in this list. Marketing at its finest.
Prelude's rating:
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - PlayStation 3
What better way to tell everyone that this game will push the PS3 technology to its limit than to illustrate every crack, wrinkle and hair on Snake's aged face.
F.E.A.R.: First Encounter Assault Recon - PC Games
Sure the 'freaky little girl' is a direct rip-off from 'The Grudge' movie, but it worked. One of the freakiest covers in gaming.
Prelude's rating:
Star Control - PC Games
The veins, the fingers, the finger nails, the cryptic symbols on the bracelet. You know there's some crazy alien sci-fi universe inside.
Prelude's rating:
BioShock - Xbox 360
BioShock's cover was so stunning in all its steampunk glory that it took me months before I even realized the freaky little girl in the background. Not the mention one of the greatest title logos ever seen in gaming.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - PC Games
Not the finest C&C title by far, but the most amazing box art that Westwood Studios have ever released.
Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds - PC Games
Gorgeous use of an oil painting that makes the gamer know they will explore a lot more than just typical dungeons.
Prelude's rating:
Tomb Raider: Underworld - PC Games
Lara Croft has never been hotter nor fitter than in her latest entry. This is the female body in its pure perfection, and the mud splashes around her legs and pistols is just icing on the cake.
Diablo II - PC Games
Pure evil yet so mezmering that you can't look away. And love the 'II' effects in flames behind the Diablo logo.
