I was a film student in the late 90's/early 00s, during the final days of VHS as the tide was turning towards DVDs. Up until that point I was limited to local video stores, foreign and arthouse films were new to me. On the advice of a classmate, I ventured out to a distant library, eager to seek out these types of films.
The library contained a sprawling selection of older films on VHS, easily putting to shame any Blockbuster or chain store of the day. There was no limit to how many videos you could check out at a time and you were allowed to keep them for a week. Needless to say I was a kid in a candy shop, taking home stacks of videos every week. As I watched the films I was like a sponge, taking in every nuance, shot, or stroke of artistic expression. These were the films that truly shaped me as a filmmaker and will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.
...look through this list and try to imagine the impact it had on a budding film student, experiencing these films for the first time.
