Ah shit, here we go again. I'll avoid any spoilers, as going into that will just make me frustrated.

While I did have many problems with THE LAST JEDI, I could at least appreciate it for trying to do something different. It was an ambitious film that actually tried to take the franchise in a mature and thematically interesting direction. I don't think it fully succeeded in bringing it home and it turned out to be a bit of a mess, but there was at least an attempt do something besides catering to nostalgia.

THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is a different beast all together. It's a mess as well, but a completely different mess. A narratively incoherent film that loses itself in a frenetically paced hunt for silly MacGuffins. It very rarely settles down to let us breathe and grow with the characters. It's in constant need to move and its storytelling suffers because of it. Instead of it being a film with something to say, it's reduced to something that feels strangely similar to a video game quest.

You see, in its attempt to do so much at such a short time, it fails to establish any sort of resonating idea or theme of its own. It's all very surface level. It lacks depth. Both thematically and emotionally. It completely ignores whatever THE LAST JEDI attempted to do, in order to just bring in familiarity. An obvious response to the backlash of that film, THE RISE OF SKYWALKER feels like the safest film they could make. So much so that it feels like uninspired fan fiction. But what is worse is that it tells me that they clearly didn't have an overall idea for the trilogy, as these films are so far off each other in terms of what they want to do with the material.

There are naturally still good things in it. The music, production design, visuals and so forth are still at the level you would expect from a STAR WARS film. And there are couple of good moments in it, but unfortunately that's all the film has to offer. A couple of good moments that's woven together in a rushed story that has nothing of value to say.
And that is perhaps my biggest gripe with this film. I could very easily recite what the plot of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is. I would have a much harder time to describe what it is actually supposed to be about.

The Last Jedi is an okay film. There are several good moments in it and it does some interesting things with Luke and Kylo Ren, yet the overall experience is brought down by a huge number of glaring flaws.

The most obvious one is that the film doesn't seem to know what to do with several characters. Finn, Rose, Poe and even Leia feels completely superfluous to the overall story. The main meat of this Star Wars film lies in the exploration of Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship, as well as our reunion with Luke Skywalker. Writer/director Rian Johnsen does a few interesting things here and he does a good job in subverting our expectations when it comes to them.

Yet the film constantly distracts from that because they have to go to whatever Finn and Poe is doing. Their storyline is boring and repetitive with plot holes and illogical character decisions. It also ultimately means nothing. Particularly Finn's subplot is atrocious, with him and Rose's visit to Canto Bight being reminiscent of the very worst from the prequels. This is a shame, as Finn was one of the more interesting things with The Force Awakens.

I like that The Last Jedi more or less spits in the face of those who've spent countless number of hours trying to make up weird theories in regards to certain characters back stories and so on. I appreciate that the film dares to go in another direction than what the fans wants them to do. This specifically with Luke Skywalker and Snoke. Snoke's death was extremely satisfying and it served the character development of Kylo Ren well. It was also nice to not get another Darth Sidious. Luke's death, on the other hand,
falls in the same trap as Han Solo's death from The Force Awakens, in the way that it fails to provoke the emotional reaction it should have. Instead it just passes as a thing that happened.

It does look very good. The visuals are nice, the music is wonderful and some of the action is spectacular. The porgs are cute. Overall, it's fine. It's somewhat interesting. But it should have been much better.

Let It Snow (2019)

It's cute enough with a couple of sweet moments in it for it to be a fine enough December watch under a warm blanket. I only wish that they would have cut out like one of the characters and given that time to flesh out the rest of the characters instead. Now it's a bit unfocused and scattershot, not allowing anyone to fully shine.

I get what the intent was, but while I was watching it, I felt like the overly exaggerated SJW twitter-feminism the film throws at you, did it more of a disservice than anything else.

It tries to be loud and provocative in order to make a point, but instead of it feeling like an empowering response to sexual assault and toxic masculinity in these post "me too" times, it comes across as patronizing and ridiculous. It's almost as if the film deliberately tried to make fun of itself and its themes by being so caricatured in its portrayal of feminism, white men and campus culture. Yet that is obviously not the idea behind it and that's where we have a huge problem. You don't want a film that touches upon such heavy themes to feel like a joke and that's exactly what BLACK CHRISTMAS feels like. It feels like a joke that somehow missed its own punchline.

Then again, someone will probably just say that this film wasn't for me. And I guess they would be right. That being said, the rest of the film and filmmaking was quite bad as well.

I'm sorry, but this film was utterly useless. I don't mind watching trashy horror films, it's actually some sort of guilty pleasure of mine, but one of my few requirements when it comes to film is that I'm at least able to see what's happening. The lighting in this film is so poor that I spent the majority of it trying to adjust my eyes to it in hope of being able to figure out whatever I was supposed to look at. I get that you want to dim the lights a bit in your moody Christmas slasher, but there's a difference in dark lighting and things just being fucking dark. This was just fucking dark.

The rest of the film is garbage as well. It's poorly acted, the kills are difficult to make out because of the lighting and sloppy editing, and the plot is poorly plotted with some severe pacing problems. I was hoping for some fun Norwegian Christmas carnage, as we don't have a lot of Norwegian slasher films, but this was a huge waste of time.

There's a surprisingly high amount of heart and emotional depth to it, and it is fueled by a lot of charm and quick wit. But it is also a musical, and musicals are often only as good as their songs. Unfortunately too many of the songs are a bit underwhelming. Which is a bit of a shame.

There's one great kill in it and the look of Jason is kinda neat. The rest of the film is trash, but it's also trashy in such a way that it ought to be kinda enjoyable. All of the ingredients are there. Yet I couldn't find myself to enjoy it as I was constantly annoyed by what they've done to Jason. The idea itself is fine or whatever. Having some sort evil worm lurking around and possessing people is a decent idea for a horror film, but don't make Jason that worm. Don't make a FRIDAY THE 13TH film in which Jason's full appearance is only present for like five minutes. I'm sorry, but I just can't get over that.

My first initial reaction when I left the cinema after viewing this film was that it was quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen. That was a bit hyperbolic, but this is however one of my most miserable times at a movie theater in recent memory. This film is an absolute train wreck. A complete disaster.

This is a horror film that has been made by a filmmaker that has clearly seen a couple of horror films, but who has completely failed to understand what it is that makes horror scary. They seem to think that it's enough to put in creepy horror music over stock images of the lake, woods and cabin for it to be scary, but seeing as the film has failed to make the location uncomfortable in itself, it doesn't work. There's no atmosphere present. There's nothing to build the fear on. This is even more evident in the dozens of jump scares that occurs throughout the film. The jump scares just happen. There's absolutely nothing unsettling beforehand or anything that builds towards it. They're just there. It's like the filmmakers know that jump scares is something you put in a modern horror film, but they don't know how they're supposed to use them.

They also seem to think that it's scary to just put in creepy imagery and sort-of dream sequences of weird things happening, but they've not realized that there has to be a clear reason as to why thing is happening for it to work. Or at least something to make it emotionally involving. This film is full of exposition, yet nothing of it makes any sense. So you're just left with a bunch of scenes that means nothing.

The script is awful. It's really dumb. Not that a dumb scrip is anything unusual in a horror film. There are plenty of great horror films that are as dumb as a rock, but this film is so dumb that it gave me a migraine. The dialogue is terrible. The film is constantly referencing other horror films through dialogue, but there's nothing clever about it. The only thing it achieves is making me want to watch those films instead. Character motivation is all over the place. There's not a sense of consistency anywhere. Characters will do one thing in one scene, then act completely different just a few seconds later. There's not a sense of natural development at all, and things just seem to change for the sake of it. The plot is completely nonsensical. Overwritten, yet just a confusing mess of things that doesn't make any sense - all of it leading up to an ending that is so bad that I couldn't even believe it. Which is is exactly how I feel about this film. I can't believe how bad it is.

Extremely slow and expository to begin with. The action appears weightless and repetitive, and the emotional beats feels more forced than earned. The film picks up some momentum once Schwarzenegger show up, as the dynamics between him and Linda Hamilton is at least somewhat interesting, but this was nonetheless disappointingly mediocre.

For being a film that is titled MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL with superstar Angelinga Jolie in the title role, there's actually very little of her in the film. There was a moment were I thought that they hadn't actually gotten her this time, so they just used CGI to bring her in. She's barely in it and is given absolutely nothing to work with. I've seen some people praise her performance in this film, which is strange to me and It leads me to believe that they're basing that off her work in the previous film rather than this one. Because aside from flying around in a couple of action scenes, she barely does anything.

The rest of the film is a mess. It's colorful, but the obvious CGI is more distracting than enchanting. There's too much going on in each frame, that it just becomes a blur of color without any depth to it. The attempts at creating something fantastical, beautiful and whimsical becomes ugly instead. The plot is underwhelming. There are far too many subplots and supporting characters that are introduced, but never properly developed or given anything to do. This results in a film that drags on in a sluggish tempo. Thankfully Michelle Pfeiffer is a lot of fun and there's some macabre enjoyment in its holocaust-inspired finale (lol).

Joker (2019)

JOKER is bleak. It's dark and depressing. Brutal and unflinching. Cruel, vile and despicable. And on the surface of it, there's not a glimmer of hope, joy or kindness to be found. Yet it is still uniquely captivating in its uncomfortable nature. A thought-provoking sledgehammer that you simply can't take your eyes from and one that deserves your utmost attention.

This was slightly better than what I expected it to be based on a few of the reviews I've read. I was surprised by how emotional it was. Not that RAMBO has ever lacked an emotional core, but here I felt that there was a sense of melancholy, sorrow, and tragedy that was dripping into every possible frame until it all culminated into full rage and relief at the end. It is a bit a clunkily executed though. The script is very on the nose in terms of what it wants you to feel and a lot of the dialogue/voice-over should probably have been rewritten a couple of times more. It's also a bit too fast-paced for its own good. When it tries to evoke so much emotion, then you really need a a few more moments to let it fully sink in. LAST BLOOD do have a sense of urgency about it, which is fine considering the plot, but personally I think I would have tolerated another 15-20 minutes here. Just to have the film slow down a bit.

That being said, the film is violent. It's really violent. And it's violent in the best possible way. While the actual plot is like a mixture of TAKEN and HOME ALONE with some underwritten villains that can't deliver a good performance if their life depended on it, it works beautifully as a framework for Sly to do what he does best. The last act is just glorious carnage and I was really amused by it.

It breaks my heart to say that I was not a fan of this film. I was expecting to adore it. It just so damned wonderful and in so many ways - it was. I love the craftsmanship behind it. The creature designs and world building is beautifully quirky, imaginative and sweetly innocent. Yet the story and characters that are presented fell completely flat for me. I did not get emotionally invested and I found eventually found the film to be more of a chore than something enjoyable.

If it weren't for the decent performances and chemistry between all the actors, then the second half of Stephen King's IT would have been an absolute disaster. An overly bloated, dumb, condescending and disjointed horror film that fails to produce any sort of scare, dread or atmosphere in its quest to become the biggest and most epic mainstream blockbuster ever. The ambitions are certainly there, but the clunky storytelling and uninspired scares can't carry the weight of those ambitions, causing this film to drown itself in its own muddy waters.

Going in to this film there was a minor part in me that feared that Tarantino would take the Manson family murders and turn it into something exploitative and slightly distasteful. Thankfully, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD is not that kind of a film. It's not really about Manson either. Instead Tarantino has crafted a film that is sweet, warm, gentle and slightly melancholic. A film about aging, friendship and the fear of being made redundant. It's a time capsule that perfectly captures the end of an era, the end of something that good and pure. It provides us with the feeling of being in a fairy tale. Which is, as we all now, occasionally better than what reality has to offer us.
Bml93's rating:
People who added this item 49 Average listal rating (35 ratings) 4.7 IMDB Rating 5.9

A proper feel-bad horror film that is told in a competent and straight-forward fashion. Unfortunately the film feels uninspired. It lacks creativity in both plot and filmmaking. The craftsmanship is solid on its own, but there's no flair here. Nothing to make it stand out. Because of that, the scares lacks impact and the emotional beats fails to stick with you. And with an ending that is supposed to truly get under your skin and make you feel bad, it's a sign of failure when it doesn't.
