Several Glasgow locations were used to represent early 20th Century New York.
The film depicted a true life event which took place in Somalia but was filmed in Morocco, mostly in the cities of Rabat and Salé.
The film was based on the true story of the construction of the railway in Thailand by prisoners of war, but was produced in Ceylon.
Since this was made during the Cold War filming in Russia was not possible. Sets were instead constructed in the unlikely locale of Spain, near Madrid. Some of the winter scenes were shot in Finland.
The Overlook Hotel filming took place in Elstree studios in England. It was the largest set ever constructed in Elstree at that time. A second unit filmed some exterior shots in the USA.
Although set in the USA and Vietnam, Full Metal Jacket was filmed entirely in the UK. Thousands of plants were imported to be used as background scenery. Filming locations included Beckton Gas Works which stood in for the ruins of Hue.
John Carpenter needed some semi-derelict locations for this movie and found the ideal setting to be St Louis which had neighbourhoods where entire blocks had been burnt out in urban fires in 1976.
The D Day landings which took place on the beaches of France during the Second World War were renacted in Ireland at Ballinesker Beach.
Fin de siecle Paris was recreated in Sydney's Fox Studios and Madrid.
World War Z (2013)
Glasgow stood in for Philadelphia in this zombie movie.
Gladiator was shot in several different locations. The opening battle in Germania was filmed in Britain's Bourne Woods, whilst Ancient Rome including the Colosseum was replicated in Malta's Fort Ricasoli, near Valletta. Some scenes including the gladiatoral training school were made in Ouarzazate, Morocco.
These films were produced in places which were not the setting of the story.
