ABCs of Death 2 (2014)
While definitely more consistent than the original I felt there were less standout moments and maybe the novelty has warn off just a smidgeon. Fortunately a few really solid entries appear towards the back end and pull the whole thing together.
The Babadook (2014)
This movie had so much going for it in the first half and the concept of personal grief and domestic issues being portrayed as a monster was a really smart idea and the grief is really well shown. The highlight of the movie is in the first half when the mother is just dealing with her difficult child. These scenes are extremely tense and well executed but unfortunately the horror elements can't carry the same intensity. It doesn't get bad per-se but there is some less than amazing effects that do distract from the film but otherwise the film is very nice looking and the acting is top notch. A very solid film, especially for a debut. Very nearly great.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Bland story, convenient writing, surprisingly uninspired setting and a slew of uninteresting characters, except for one. Baymax is the only reason for seeing this. His schtick never gets old, every joke works and his design is brilliant. Makes what would be another eye-roller of a Disney movie consistently entertaining and enjoyable.
The first two acts are pretty bad. Not offensive, just highly uninteresting. The third act is better but still pretty damn lackluster. Apart from the occasional nice shot with appropriate music, Godzilla is extremely generic. They try to shoehorn the post-war themes of the original Gojira into this and it really doesn't work. Also, for some reason they gave Ken Watanabe every single cheesy line so it was impossible to take him seriously whatsoever. Overall very meh and it sure didn't help that my only option was to see it in 3D which looked like poop like every post-conversion 3D film.
Gone Girl (2014)
Very long and very silly but passably entertaining. Just an absurd amount of twists that just get sillier and sillier and every time a twist happens you know you have at least another 30-40 minutes waiting for that to resolve.
Goodbye to Language (2014)
A really cool film experimenting with 3D techniques and sound design. Really interesting but a bit headache inducing as well.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Funny and imaginative but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Just too many mean-spirited characters and no heart.
Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
It's humorous, somewhat clever and the cameos are fun. Is decent.
Tokyo Tribe (2014)
Lots of highs and lows, Tokyo Tribe balances out to be an overall fun experience but the third act falls apart and it would have been nice if every rapper was actually good. Killer soundtrack and sets though.
When it's not being absurdly cliche, it's sucking the original film's dick to death.
Far surpassed my expectations. Could have and should have been terrible but Kevin Smith really found the perfect tonal balance to pull this off. Surprisingly great acting also really helped sell the premise and its actually a really good looking film too. Easily Smith's most impressive film and I'm definitely looking forward to his next 3 Canadian themed films.
V/H/S Viral (2014)
I couldn't tell if the plot was weird or just badly conceived but I'm leaning on good because the segments were generally pretty good and I liked a lot of the music in it. A lot of fun overall and having Marcel Sarmiento direct the main plot was a great choice.
For a movie that is only there to set up the television series this actually works pretty well as a stand-alone film. The characters don't really stand out but its cutesy and fun.
