Consider this a tie with Part 1. Both are masterpieces of arguably equal quality. Part 1 has the benefit of being first and thus more iconic but personally I find Part 2 to actually benefit in its continuation. Due to personally feeling the story (slightly) more and its recognition being less than it's deserved I chose it to represent The Godfather spot on my list.

Ran (1985)
This one is a bit odd. I don't know if I'd call it Kurosawa's best movie. It's definitely not his most approachable and not everyone is going to have it resonate with them on the same level it did with me. But there are a few things that can universally be agreed on. It's strikingly beautiful, it quite brilliantly adapts King Lear (a play which itself has been quite divisive but I personally love), the action and scale is impressive and engaging... and it has a masterful central performance (in my opinion really only rivaled by Rashomon). It's hard to argue that Seven Samurai is not the better movie and I wouldn't. There's just more of a history and connection with this one.

Seven Samurai (1954)
Controversially ranked ever so slightly below Ran. Lists like this do occasionally take into account factors other than film quality.

I consider this, Fellowship of The Ring and The Two Towers to be a singular movie just in parts. But instead of taking up three spots on the list I felt the most sense for the conclusive part which wraps up the story to also represent the trilogy. Plus it happens to be my slightly preferred part. Though they all work best as a whole, so it naturally has the benefit of building off of the established story and characters.

The entire original trilogy would find its way on this list in some spot but since I'm only doing 1 movie per franchise I opted to represent Star Wars with what has always been my favorite (even before I knew of its reputation among fans) and, well, the best.
ObligatoryName's rating:
This is essentially the same situation with Star Wars. Raiders of The Lost Ark is near equal for me. It was naturally the first one I saw and will always have a place in my heart for that. Plus it's a near perfect and fun movie to begin with. But this is the one I most watched growing up and is probably the most fun if not better than Raiders in other aspects. As a side note, I find Temple of Doom while definitely the weakest of the three, quite underrated.

I love the whole Vengeance trilogy, but while I have a soft spot for them (particularly Sympathy For Mr Vengeance) it's hard to argue with this one. The other two might have made my list but this one definitely needed to be there.

Evil Dead II (1987)
One of the most endlessly fun and rewatchable movies ever. Though I admire the first in some ways even more (plus it was my first) and love it nearly equal with all their differences, there's just something about this movie that possesses me to always give it the edge.

I also really love Army of Darkness and think it's probably the most underrated of the trilogy.

The second in Polanski's Apartment trilogy, this is quite objectively the best and my personal favorite as well. But Repulsion and The Tenant are both among my favorites. So like I have done before, I include them here in an honorary spot instead of using the limited 125.

Another movie that is just so rewatchable. Putting aside its qualities which are legitimately great there's just something about it that has cemented itself in my life over many years.

The first Kurosawa movie I saw (I think I was maybe eight). It's pretty much flawless, with a central performance that was one of the first to make me realize just how essential one person can be to the whole of a project.

Maybe the first adult horror film I had seen (the same year but before The Exorcist). It's hard to say but I was very young and even from then I absolutely fell in love it and the genre as a whole. It was a milestone for the time and I'd say still holds up in what it does.

Aliens (1986) (1986)
I flip back and forth between Alien and Aliens. Both are great in very different ways. Alien is near perfect suspense horror and it has the benefit of that initial wow factor while Aliens is coming off of that as a sequel. But I also think Aliens has more going for it than people give it credit for, and I think it wins a bit in rewatchability.

Alien would be here as well, but only one film per franchise. While I find Alien 3 somewhat underrated and an overall good movie (the assembly cut) it would not come close to making the list. Resurrection is kind of a mindless guilty please but no, just no.

Movies have always been an important part of my life, since my earliest memories, and would blossom thanks to my dad and two uncles, and quite lax filtering when it comes to what I was able to see, and see a lot I did (across the whole spectrum). I was the youngest of my generation so with my one uncle along my sister and cousins (as we spent a lot of our weekends together at his place) would often rent from the video store, buy, or go see all sorts of movies. From adult comedies, dramas, etc but especially in the realm of horror for the night time viewings. With the other uncle I tended to be introduced to the old classics (the classy comedies, dramas, noirs, sci-fi, thrillers etc) of cinema, and yes he was a major horror film buff. Then my dad rounded me out with tastes from everything, things from when he grew up to the the modern (at the time) hits. Speaking of horror, considering how much I seen and how young I was, outside of (maybe) a couple horror films I didn't get scared (unlike everyone else I was with) and could sleep in a dark room alone right after (apparently I'm a freak that way), this has even lessened to the point of no reaction to practically anything (not just movies) that is supposed to be "scary." But despite this, or actually probably because of it, the horror genre has become one of if not my favorite. You might notice a lot of the movies I picked, are either outright horror or have some sort of horror involved. But that's getting off topic, without further ado I present...

One hundred and twenty-five of my favorite movies. Though not necessarily my favorite one hundred and twenty-five (if that makes sense).

My intent in the picking process was to include movies that had some sort of impact on me in various stages of my life (but not strictly affected by nostalgia), or simply resonated with me in some way. Some of these movies I believe to be of the best, but in some cases there are movies I think are better (in one way or another) than certain ones included, yet they aren't. I'm going less objective and more personal, though genuine quality does come into play.

When I originally made this I would think up movies and add them. This filled my list up pretty quick. To get something definitive the list would need to be much longer and probably broken up in some way. Maybe I'll eventually do something like that but until then this is what we have.

If you're surprised or disappointed by the omission of something (not that I would care about the latter), look to some of the movies I have rated 8-10 with the knowledge that some of them actually have a good chance of ranking among some of these. As is I had to limit myself to a maximum of only 5 movies per director. And I chose to stick to only one movie per franchise (and even loose trilogies). A decision made when I realized how quickly it can be overwhelmed. And it's a bit more boring if there is I'm not challenged to make a variety.
