Lost River (2015)

I seriously didn't expect from Ryan Gosling to make such a weird and messed up movie.

I guess it's not bad once you realize what you have just watched: a film about sensations and visuals that doesn't really need to tell a story.
It's kind of a Only God Forgives' lost cousin.

The Lords of Salem (2013)

Satanism, witchcraft, musical and visual aesthetics in this neoclassic horror flick by Rob Zombie.

Really trashy and baroque at times, but also really neat and visually stunnig - verrrry very weird and spooky sequences too.

Crazy, kinda disturbing and perverted (that pretty much sums up Japanese cinema), but also poetic and philosophical in its own way.

A real piece of art, in my opinion: the colors, the scenographies, the visuals - it's raw, gritty and cold, with few dialogues (since the main character is mute) and wonderful landscapes. It's like Nicolas Winding Refn just went back in time and shot with a camera what was going on during the Middle Ages.
Nature has a leading role, and it is the real protagonist (or antagonist).

This is an atypical film, because Refn is largely known for his metropolitan dramas filled with sparkling neon lights, and it's really interesting to see him work with natural environments. Refn's cinema is mainly made of colors and anthropology, it tells about people through cinematography and anxiogenic sequences without the excessive use of words and dialogues.

It's not something you always experience watching a sex scene from the inside of a womans's birth canal. Like one of those Japanese hentais.
Gaspar Noรฉ always knows how to bend our minds (see Irreversible or Seul Contre Tout), here he (very) slowly takes us on a messed up journey through the ghost of a drug dealer.

The title intro of the film is one of the coolest ever made, but its adrenalinic power has really nothing to do with the movie - in fact, it is very slow built, but aside of that, it's still pretty good and trippy.

Killer Joe (2000)

Twisted and violent picture by William Friedkin, with several sequences of brutality and depravity. Definitely a film about family, but not for families.
You might want to skip fried chicken for dinner for at least a week after watching this.

Cemetery Man (1994)

Just like the poster says: zombies, guns (this one not so much) and sex, laced with poetry, black humor, onirism and surrealism. It'll make you laugh, but also think about the meaning of life and yadayadayada.
Also, Michele Soavi contributed in directing Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, just saying.

Natural Born Killers (1994)

Truly schizoid movie, it's like it went straight out of a strip cartoon filled with disturbing black humor and tons of violence.

acqua gassata's rating:

The King
It's not necessarily a list about horror or arthouse movies - it's about surrealistic and schizoid scenarios (sometimes, with a hint of humor), mysterious and dark atmospheres, absurdism, mixed with beautiful cinematography.
