Red Country - Joe Abercrombie

Lord Grimdark treads into the gritty western genre and of course it's a hell of a lot of fun as always, The Bloody-Nine is back too, Woo-hoo!

I avoided the whole GOT franchise thing for the longest time, what with the show being hugely popular and me being a contrarian arsehole and all. So with the whole hubbub dying down with the generally perceived anti-climatic completion of the TV series I decided to give the Songs Of Ice and Fire books a crack...and yes, wow, indeed some of the best fantasy books of all time (especially the first three). Will I ever get around to watching the TV show? At this point I'm not sure I want to, we all know what it's like to watch adaptations after reading the book and it's never quite the same, is it?

A Storm Of Swords is rightfully considered the best of the series and well up there with the best books I've read.
Infernal Sprout!'s rating:

The general consensus among fans is things go slightly downhill here and I tend to agree, but the standard set by A Storm Of Swords was so incredibly high where else could it really go? I still rank these books very high though, because Martins writing is exceptional, plus I love Brienne and Samwell and most bizarrely of all Theon, who goes from one of the most hated characters to perhaps the most interesting one of all! Meanwhile conversely Dani becomes one of the dullest, I mean c'mon take your dragons and go to damn Westeros already Haha!
Infernal Sprout!'s rating:

So I guess this means I've joined the hordes waiting for 'Winds Of Winter', Damn, ten years... Dani just became interesting again too, fingers crossed it comes out soon. I can certainly understand Martins plight through, wrapping this epic story in one (or two) books is an immense task as well as the pressure of the expectations of an enormous fanbase that has vastly proliferated due to the show's popularity. Overall I'm very grateful to the man for these books that have reignited my passion for fantasy -which I loved when I was younger but stagnated as reached my late teens, and reading as a whole -which has somewhat drifted and become increasingly sporadic in latter years, there is such detail and rich imagination in these books I find it very hard to criticise any of it too harshly. Hope to re-read in the near future so I fall in love all over again.
