Still/Born (2017)

Christie Burke does a lot of heavy lifting in a film that is not as captivating as her performance. She is more or less carrying the entire film on her shoulders and it would be easily disposable without her in it.

The film itself offers nothing to distinguish itself from other horror films of this kind and the filmmaking leaves a lot to be desired. I can appreciate how dark it eventually gets, but the film falls into the same kind of dull tropes and cheap jump scares that usually brings these films down a notch.

It just never manages to keep the atmosphere up and there are too many moments in which the tension is deflated by something dumb or silly happening, like a lame jump scare or a plot element that makes little sense. That being said, Christie Burke is really good and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her get crazier for every new scene.

There's an emotional core to the film that I deeply appreciated. It made the film a lot more tolerable than what it could have ended up as. For despite a neat premise and some clever execution of that idea, the film is a lot more tiresome than enjoyable. The humor very rarely works and it's way too sanitized and watered down for it to fully work as a reference to the slasher genre, and thus it doesn't really work for me. It's a mash of ideas that actually lacks some blood for it to fully grow.

The Fly (1986)

- Rewatched

The amazing thing with the THE FLY is that it takes an admittedly goofy concept, and treats it as a proper human drama with richly developed characters and an established emotional connection that feels earned and genuine. The gloriously crafted body horror is horrifying on its own, but the horror of THE FLY comes from the tragedy of the story itself. Watching a man slowly deteriorate to a monster, losing himself in the process, while his only human connection is completely unable to help, is a frightening idea and it is shown to near perfection in THE FLY. There's a sense of fear, despair, helplessness and sadness surrounding the entirety of the film and it's something that truly gets under your skin. Body horror is a lot fun, but when a film manages to combine that with something that scares you on an emotional level, you know you've seen something that will stand the test of time.

Wounds (2019)

A Lovecraftian inspired descent into madness, toxic masculinity and alcoholism that slowly creeps its way under your skin. It's just a shame that once it gets there, it does nothing interesting with it. The creepy imagery is intriguing in itself, but WOUNDS half-baked ideas fails to do anything for me. Ultimately leading me to wonder what I was supposed to get out of it.

The Thing (1982)

- Rewatched

The practical effects are amazing, but THE THING truly shines in how amazing it is at building up and portraying fear and paranoia. This is John Carpenter at the top of his game.

Hellions (2015)

Tries to be its own artsy version of something like ROSEMARY'S BABY, but completely lacks the substance and filmmaking to achieve it. It opens up promisingly enough and I generally like the production and costume design of it. There are pumpkin heads everywhere, which is something every film should have. But unfortunately, the film quickly descends into a series of ugly looking images that fails to evoke any sort of dread, terror, spookiness or sort of meaning to them. The purplish color correction of the film is also way more distracting than anything else as it adds absolutely nothing to the film. It's superficial fluff that only proves that the film is trying to mask its lack of depth through a poorly thought-out stylistic choice.

Obligatory viewing in October. It's one of my favorite films. Gorgeous stop-motion animation. Beautifully detailed and well-crafted characters that are put into a wonderfully weird world, which is spun around an amusing and charming story. A story that manages to be as entertaining as it is emotionally genuine.

If you were to create an origin story for Dracula, then DRACULA UNTOLD is not the worst way you could do it - even if it isn't exactly what you would hope to get. It is very much a CGI-heavy action spectacle that emphasizes more on 300-style battles than character-driven horror and atmosphere, but for what it is, it works fine enough. Though the film is easily at its best whenever it embraces the darkness, gruesome and macabre that surrounds its vampire story, and it stumbles more whenever it tries to turn this into a light superhero film.

Luke Evans delivers a decent performance and it is nice to see that they incorporated some historic inspiration into his Dracula. The stand-out is however Charles Dance, who adds a lot of gravitas to the film with his minor role. I would love to see him as Dracula one day.

The Wolfman (2010)

- Rewatched

It's fine. There's some decent werewolf carnage in it. Benicio del Toro delivers a decent performance and Anthony Hopkins is chewing so much scenery that there's hardly any left. The problem is however that the film lacks atmosphere. THE WOLFMAN is a film that should drown you in its mood. The filmmakers have placed all the right elements there, in order for it to work. The constant presence of the moon, the fog, its use of the Victorian era as a backdrop for the plot and Danny Elfman's wonderful score. Yet for some reason, none of it translates into an atmosphere that truly sucks you in. Director Joe Johnston fails to truly put some sort of unique visual flair to it, so it feels more like a fabricated copy than something exciting. And without that atmosphere, the film feels a bit flat and not as engaging as it could have been.

Far better than what it has any right to be. Yet, with that said, I've now just realized that the majority of these computer screen films that I've seen have been quite decent. This one is not as hilarious as its predecessor, but thanks to its high energy, creativity and playfulness, it manages to be just as enjoyable.

I think it's a flawless horror film.

Opens up with an intriguing premise, only for it to then quickly lose itself in a convoluted mess of ideas that never manages to establish the sense of dread, fear and paranoia those early minutes promised. Instead we're left with a film that it's difficult to get a fully realized grasp on and it is therefore difficult to really care that much about it.

This film is so out of touch with everything that it's amazing to think that actual humans put it together. Screw this.

Jamie Lee Curtis. God bless her heart. She's actually giving a solid performance in this film and you can see that she's desperately trying to brink some sort of gravitas and dignity to this film. Unfortunately the same amount of effort haven't been put anywhere else in this film, as it is just boring garbage.

This film is amazing. Sam Raimi truly perfected how to do these kind of comedic horror films with DRAG ME TO HELL. It's cartoonishly over-the-top in the most beautiful way. The body horror is gross and in your face. The camera work is fun an inventive. The musical score is equally exaggerated to a wonderful effect with its sinister violins and sounds of impending doom. It's all very showman-like and it really works in DRAG ME TO HELL's favor. Raimi, with all of his techniques, never hides that the fact that you're watching a film. At one moment he even break the fourth wall by having a fly directly land on the camera lens. It's silly, but oh Lord, it's so much fun to watch.

Yet the film is also emotionally rich and heartfelt. You do really feel and care for Alison Lohman throughout the entire film. The allegory for bulimia, while not really delved too much into, is effective and provides the film with some additional emotional depth. Which makes DRAG ME TO HELL just stand out even more. It's spooky. It's fun. But it is also emotionally relatable.

Fright Night (1985)

FRIGHT NIGHT is a wonderful blend of horror, comedy and 80's cheese that is made all the more enjoyable by its cast of characters and its delightful effects.
