When looking at David O. Russell's two previous films, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, one can't help but feel that American Hustle is a little drawback. Certainly, the performances are excellent, with Amy Adams being particularly good (and showing some decent cleavage (omg!)), and it was definitely a fun film to see. But the reason for why it's a fun film is more because of some genuinely funny scenes that were funny by themselves. As a whole film, on the other hand, American Hustle feels unfocused, messy and too long.

One of the biggest problems I had with this film is that it feels very much like a character study on the various characters in this film, meaning that the plot is irrelevant. But that's not really the case. This is a plot-driven film with quirky characters, and therefore, the focus on the characters entirely causes the film to be a structural mess. And slightly inconsistent.

But! I certainly enjoyed it and had a lot of fun.

The sequel to the terrifying Insidious is not as insanely, constantly scary as its predecessor was. But James Wan has nonetheless managed to craft an extremely spooky horror film that gives the viewer an unsettling and creepy feeling throughout its entire running time.

While Wan doesn't manage to craft the same amount of terror that made Insidious a modern horror masterpiece, he keeps on improving himself as a filmmaker. Insidious: Chapter 2 is very well-made. It's basically flawless from every technical aspect, it's well-shot, outstandingly acted and it's story is, quite surprisingly, very sharp. This chapter has in some ways replaced scares with a much more fascinating story, one that seeks to explore more of the world that was created in the first film. And as we get deeper and deeper into "The Further", the film's atmosphere only gets spookier. It's an extremely well-told story, specially for a horror film.

Wan has already established himself as a master when it comes to creating creepy images that's likely to stick with you for a while, and he does so again, even if it not as often, with Chapter 2. He's also one of those few directors that manages to rightly use jump scares, making them effective when they occur. Making sure that we do get some scares in a film that's really more about atmosphere and storytelling than full nightmare-terror.

Saying that Matthew McConaughey has finally turned his career around is starting to get a bit old, seeing as he has only delivered outstanding performances in three years now. But his performance is Dallas Buyers Club is one of those performances that's likely to be remembered as his best work, when his career is coming to an end in the future. He carries this film, with the help of an outstanding Jared Leto, on is shoulders.

Dallas Buyers Club is a solid film and McConaughey's struggle with HIV/AIDS and his battle against pharmaceutical companies does make for some quite compelling drama. The problem with the film is that it seems to just end out of nowhere, not giving the topic or the characters involved a satisfying conclusion. Another problem is that Jennifer Garner's character could have been completely cut from the film, and it wouldn't have removed anything major from the film. Which is a shame, because this film could have been really excellent. Now it's only very good.

Captain Phillips is an extremely tense and nail-biting thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat for the most of its running time. I appreciate that it manages to leave basically everything besides what's actually important out of it. Meaning that it tells a rather simple plot in a very effective way with characters that ends up being fully complex because of the actions we see them do in their situation, as opposed to forced and unnecessary scenes to simply develop them. Which was rather nice, and it does also mean that it's rather well-paced, despite it lasting over two hours.

It's also a showcase for Tom Hanks acting abilities. Particularly his final scene, which itself is worthy of an Academy Award nomination. Barkhad Abdi is also terrific in his role. If there's one flaw in the film, it would probably be that the last half could have been tighter, but it's not really a big deal since it's so tense.

RoboCop (2014)
@ Cinema

Many people are likely to completely dismiss or hate this remake of the Paul Verhoeven classic. Many people are going to disagree with me on this, but that close-mindedness is a bit foolish. This 2014 version of Robocop is how a remake should be done. It does keep the basic premise of the original, and sends it in a completely different direction with its own ideas. The original is certainly more humours, satirical and better, but this is a very different Robocop and it works rather well as it is.

The first half of the film is very interesting. The training of Robocop, and how they're creating him is actually very competently made. And it sets up for some solid commentary. The aspect of a corporation trying to market Robocop and robots is quite fascinating. There are also some emotional moments that works quite as well. The action is also solid. And it's refreshing to see an action film that manages to avoid pumping in many unnecessary action scenes. So the action does never get tiresome, and it's very slickly made. I see a lot of people typing angrily on their keyboards because of the PG-13 rating, but the truth is, this version of Robocop didn't need the R rating. And the reason for that is quite simply because it's a very different film.

The sad truth is however that no matter how good this remake is, and it's quite good, many fans of the original are blindly going to hate it. So the film doesn't really stand a chance against those people, and many of them are likely to overlook the qualities in this film. But, with an open mind, I don't see why you shouldn't find the new Robocop entertaining.

How people are able to completely loathe Twilight, and be so mild to this, is beyond me. This is exactly the same thing. It's not particularly worse, but it's certainly not any better. This film never falls in to being completely awful because it's constantly slightly entertaining throughout, but oh my, it's incredibly bland.

I've got absolutely no clue regarding the novel it's based on, but this just seems like a rehash of every single teenage-fantasy element that has worked in previous films, including Twilight, mixed together. Mediocrity at its most generic.

Red Heat (1988)
@ Blu-ray

Aside from being a very generic film, the biggest sin this Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle commits is that it's criminally dull. It's so boring that it took me two attempts to get through this garbage.

I'm able to enjoy a Schwarzenegger film. I'm one of those who enjoys his accent and limited acting, as well as most of his brainless film. But this was so humourless and the action so generic that it was like going to a funeral. So dire.

The Lego Movie is a blast. Who could have guessed that when it was first announced? The animation is a lot of fun. Cleverly making CGI look like stop-motion. It's colourful and dazzling with a lot of things happening at the screen at the same time. The film moves with extremely fast pace, not allowing one single dull moment to occur. It's fun.

It's also very cleverly written, which is what really makes The Lego Movie such an entertaining film. There are some very funny references here, which I will not spoil here, and some great humour throughout the entire film. And not having "Everything is awesome" constantly on your mind after seeing this is impossible.

Her (2014)
@ Cinema

Once in a while you encounter a film that just really hits every personal and emotional note in you, a film that in many ways manages to visually portray many of your own emotions and feelings. For me, Her turned out to be a film like that. I felt personally connected to this film. Having gone through my very first break-up a couple of months ago, and in many ways suffering from loneliness myself, I ended up seeing a lot of myself in this film. And when it was over, I felt inspired to change my own life and to actually do something with my own emotional struggle. Needless to say, this film managed to bring out a few tears in me.

While that certainly is the main reason for why I absolutely love Her, I do also adore it for it's very simple sci-fi premise, it's charm and humour, and touching love story. It's beautifully acted, cleverly written, gorgeously shot and the music is instantly memorable. Best film of 2013.

Well, it's not really a Die Hard film is it? It got Die Hard in the title, and Bruce Willis is playing someone named John McClane, but besides that this really just feels like a bigger budgeted generic straight-to-DVD action film. And it's the action that's the redeeming factor in this film. There are some great sequences here, but it's sadly drowned by everything else.

The main issue is primarily the script. If there ever was one? The plot is at best non-existent, the humour is absent and it's extremely repetitive when it comes to dialogue. You need more than two hands to be able to count how many times Bruce Willis said he was on vacation, or how many references there was about his age.

The first film were a horror comedy. The sequel is an action comedy gorefest of sheer brutality and ludicrous violence. It's incredibly silly, yet so magnificent. It's bigger, louder and possibly dumber, but the premise of Nazi zombies fighting Russian zombies is so awesome, that this is definitely going to be a guilty pleasure by many.

I do still hold the first film a little bit over this. Slightly. Which is simply because of the fact that the first one took place in a snowy landscape. Blood, gore and snow just looks so damn awesome together.

Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
Re-watched

@ Blu-ray

It's not better than the first film. It's lacking a bit in almost every department, ranging from humour to fight scenes, to actual plot. And it's sorely missing Nicolas Cage's presence. Jim Carrey is cool, but his role is too small and undeveloped to leave any real impact. It's a lot darker, and seem to play a lot more on shock value, but it ends up being a mix of hit and miss. Something turns out to be rather funny, other thing just ends up as awkward. There's a scene where The Motherfucker is going to rape one of the female superheroes, but fails to get a hard one. Awkward. Not really funny. Gives the film a strange tone.

A sequel shouldn't necessarily copy the exact same things that made the film it precedes so great, but Kick-Ass 2 makes a fatal decision in leaving out the thing that made Kick-Ass top-notch entertainment. Hit-Girl. This sequel decides to focus more on Mindy Macready instead of her alter-ego, cheating us for a lot snappy dialogue and thrilling fight scenes. Instead we end up with a lot of traditional and dull high school drama.

Still entertaining. Not as good as it could have been.

Don Jon (2013)
@ Blu-ray

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut is sometimes chucklingly funny, but it's very often way too much awkward for its own good. This is not because of the porn displayed in the film, nor for it's topic of porn addiction, but simply because every single thing in the relationship between Gordon-Levitt's character and Scarlett Johansson is so awkward it's almost unwatchable. That's not good.

The relationship his character develops with Julianne Moore seems far more interesting, but unfortunately, it's not developed enough. Because of that, I'm having a hard time buying a lot of the things that occurred in the film.

@ Blu-ray

Matthew McConaughey delivers an extremely strong performance, which has turned out to be quite usual for him lately, making it no surprise for me. Surprising however are the two performances from the young boys in this film, who are quite simply phenomenal.

Mud comes across as film that proves how good it can be if you've got a good story. This is great storytelling. Engaging characters interacting with each other in a simple, but solid story, that manages to be sweet and heartwarming without becoming too much. This is compelling cinema.

Sharknado (2013)
@ Netflix

One would think that a film with the title and premise of Sharknado would be the ultimate "so bad it's good" film. Sadly. It's not. The problem is that seeing as the film's goal is probably to be so bad that it's good, it lacks the thing that truly makes a film "so bad it's good". Which is that it's not done on purpose. The charm comes when the people involved actually thinks they're making a good film. That's not the case with Sharknado.

So what we're left with is simply a film that's rather bad, mostly dull and not as entertaining as it really should have been. It doesn't deserve the hype.

I'm actually quite surprised that I liked this film. Usually I tend to just roll my eyes and groan at the different songs performed in these kind of films. But this one I kinda liked. It was rather entertaining.

Delightfully campy and weird, cute and charming, great choice of songs and quite overall just a lot of fun. The sequence of them singing "Please, Mr. Jailer" turned out out to be another memorable film moment for me.

This British horror film has several good thing going for it. It looks good to begin with, and it's delightful to see that some of the characters in this film at least try to think rationally. Even if they tend to do stupid things on occasion. It's also bizarrely enjoyable, as there's some really weird things going on and the slow burn build-up is solid. Even when it doesn't provide any actual scares during those parts.

The problem is however when it's coming to its conclusion. During its final moments, a horror film about a haunted house needs to really give some scares or tension. You can't have a lot of build-up, and then don't release it towards the end. The problem for me here is that it looks like they tried to unleash hell, but it just came of as really tame, and not frightening at all. It also didn't make a lot of sense either.

This film is not a terrible experience, but it could have been much, much better.

Few people can play a slick lawyer better than Matthew McConaughey. He is very good, and his performance in The Lincoln Lawyer is just one of many recent performances that has totally turned his career upside down.

If you've seen these kind of courtroom thrillers before, you'll probably have no problem guessing how this one is going to turn out. But that's easily forgiving when the film is as well-made and entertaining as this one. I really enjoyed it.

I had really high expectations for The Master, but it just didn't fulfil those expectations. The acting in it is terrific. Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding, Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) is magnificent and Amy Adams is brilliant. The cinematography is also very good. Besides that, I didn't really get too much out of this film.

My problem with this film is that I couldn't resonate with it. I couldn't engage myself in it. I just didn't find anything in it that particularly interested me.

I liked Red. It was funny. The sequel is occasionally entertaining, but considering the cast and basic premise (which is good for solid escapism), Red 2 doesn't deliver enough fun for it to avoid being pure mediocrity.

It's disappointing to see that every action scene is similar to the one that occurred before it. It's disappointing to see Bruce Willis sleepwalking through the film. It's enjoyable to see Anthony Hopkins chew the scenery with pure camp, but this is so sin the middle of the "good" and "bad" spectre that it's almost insulting.

When viewing 12 Years a Slave I found myself constantly thinking that this was powerful, brutal and unflinching stuff, but that it lacked something to really hit me emotionally. But when I left the cinema, I fully realized what I had just seen. And then it struck me with emotionally devastating force, and when that happens, you know you've seen something extraordinary.

Ranking up there with films such as Schindler's List, this is essential viewing on our own history, and a prime example of how you can achieve great, insightful, emotional and powerful stuff with the help of cinema. Because I believe that 12 Years of Slave is not just simply a great film because it's about slavery. Everyone can a make a film about slavery, and then whip some people. But not everyone can make a film that's so honest as this film. Not every film can shake up your emotions after you've left the cinema. Only a tremendously powerful film can do that. I've used that word, powerful, a lot now. But that's simply the best word to describe the experience that 12 Years a Slave is. It's powerful.

Jack and the Giant Slayer is a mostly fun and light fairy tale-adventure film with some decent looking giants, but there are two things that made me dislike this film quite a bit.

The first thing is that I think it's all over the place tonally. It's a very simple story probably aimed at younger kids, but there are several moments of what's supposed to be really cruel violence on the screen. There are moments when the giants appear to be biting off someone's head, and they'll just awkwardly cut away from it. Things like that and some really childish humour creates a little bit of a mess. But the worst thing is that the film doesn't end at its natural conclusion, instead it goes on for 30 more minutes. And seeing as for me, the film really did end 30 minutes earlier, the last unnecessary battle does nothing for me, other than feeling like a chore.

This remake is terribly boring during the first half. It tells a story that's not bad or anything like that, it's just told in such a dull way. And when thing finally starts to happen, it feels like two completely separate films.

And in the second half everything is happening way too fast, making it almost impossible to process any of the things that happen on the screen. It certainly doesn't help that I'm having a slightly difficulty with buying some of the actions by the characters. It's almost a mess.

And he's absolutely spot-on. It's extremely well-thought out and you're definitely going to learn a lot about general filmmaking by watching it.

It's also funny how this is not just your average guy sitting in front of a camera talking with a monotone voice for 20 minutes. No, here he takes on a role of a serial killer, and his review occasionally sidetracks off to his demented personality. It's hysterically funny.

This is one of those films you simply see because of the acting. Most of the performances in this film are terrific, and Cate Blanchett is outstanding.

For me, Blue Jasmine simply worked in small dozes. There are occasionally moments of brilliance in certain scenes, but when I view the film as a whole, complete piece of work, I don't really think I got that much out of it. It just seems to skimp over every theme it introduced. And an excellent performance alone is not enough to make me fall for a film.

Splitting up and releasing Nymphomaniac as two separate volumes is a bit silly, and it does make certain Listal things rather complicated. Nymphomaniac should be one full experience, and luckily, my local cinema decided to show both volumes with a ten minute long break between them. Anyways.

For all the controversy Nymphomaniac has caused because of its graphic sexual content, featuring body doubles having real sex, I was quite surprised to see that none of it felt pornographic or anything like that. Making me think that people are either really sensitive, or that I just don't see any problem with sex and full nudity in film.

But despite all of the different, various sex scenes and nudity in Nymphomaniac, it's never erotic or sexually arousing. It's not going to turn you on. Instead, it's probably going to make you feel dirty, and not in a glorified way, but really dirty. I felt for a shower immediately after the film ended. Lars von Trier delves into the dirty, and quite ugly side of sex and sex addiction, and he therefore manages to create a film that's truly fascinating and unique.

Because Nymphomaniac is not really a film about sex. It's a film about an individual's freedom, and ones desire to follow ones instincts to the very end, no matter the consequences. And Lars von Trier manages to tell us that extremely well. This is a film that never feels long. Because in between every sex scene, there's some really well-told drama mixed up with a lot of humour, and very clever references to literature, art, religion and nature. Nymphomaniac is certain to provoke a lot of people, but I found it to be a really rich experience. I f only it ended to minutes earlier.

It's graphic content of course, but that's all there is to it. And when the only thing a film provide is torture, rape and screaming, without anything to build the film around that, it easily becomes incredibly dull. A film like I Spit on Your Grave 2 needs to feel provocative in order to work. It doesn't. It just feels tame and meaningless, and in a genre like this, that's the worst thing you could end up being.

You see, when I, during the various rape and torture scenes in this film ends up focusing more on how silly Jemma Dallender's screams and cries sound like, there's definitely something wrong here.

Never was a huge fan of the last film, and I've never touched the video game. I guess the film would have made more sense if you've played the game, or if you for some reason remember anything from the previous film. I found there to be some confusing aspects in this film, but then again, the plot wasn't exactly compelling enough for me to get interested in it. Take away the Silent Hill setting, and you've basically got a very ordinary horror story.

But where this film falls flat is that it heavily relies on graphic, disturbing images to shock or scare you. The problem with that is that if you're going to attack the viewer with those kind of images, you need to build that around some sort of atmosphere. The images themselves don't work if there's nothing else there to grab you.

Yeah... The animation in Despicable Me 2 is naturally excellent. But that's kinda to be expected from these big animated films. I'm rather disappointed by the plot. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first film, but the villainous angle was rather refreshing. The sequel does feel much more generic.

Every laugh this film has to offer comes from the yellow minions, who are hysterical and used more frequently this time around. Probably because they received so much love from the first film. But I'd be careful to use them too much. One can get too much of a good thing eventually.

Melancholia (2011)
@ Blu-ray

There's no real plot in Melancholia. It's more about describing a feeling, a state of mind, rather than actually telling a story. Which in itself is usually very interesting, but to be able to do that properly, the film needs to give the viewer something to be able to hold on for two hours. Lars von Trier fails at that this time.

It's very early stated that this is a film about depression. It's a depressing film. But I never feel any progress. I feel no change in any of the characters, no development. Nothing. It's just two hours of misery that doesn't tell me anything more than what first 10 minutes did. It really felt like an unnecessary watch.

It's fun to watch Sylvester Stallone and other 80's action legends do these kind of films. It makes me happy that despite their age, they continue making these films.

They might not be cinematic great. Bullet to the Head is not a particularly good film on a cinematic level. But it's a decently entertaining film starring Sylvester Stallone. Something to watch on a Friday with pizza and beer. It's mildly amusing, got some creative death scenes and the violence is not toned down. Decent watch.

I've not read the book, nor have I seen any other film adaptations of The Great Gatsby, so I have not to compare it against. Which is fine, really. For me, this film is mostly driven by the love story between Gatsby and Daisy, brilliantly portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. So I don't really think the film starts properly before it hits the one hour mark. That's not good. This is a long film, and I really didn't like that first hour as it just felt like unfocused Baz Luhrmann imagery, glamour and glitter and such. It was rather dull.

But once Gatsby and Daisy finally meet things get a lot better. The whole film swifts up a gear, and it's constantly more enjoyable. The relationship is neatly developed and the interactions between the various characters are therefore more interesting as well.

A film may be beautifully shot, and extremely stylish and all that, but that doesn't help one bit if the only thing I want to do when watching that film is to turn the goddamn thing off. Only God Forgives is one of those films. I absolutely hated it. Never have I felt such a huge desire to turn of the film, and do something productive instead. This is an overly stylized and violent nightmare.

Now, I don't hate it for being violent (nor is it really that violent when compared to a lot of other films). Nor do I hate it for being more artsy. I like films that are violent, and I like a lot of artsy films. What I don't like however are films that drowns themselves in empty and uninteresting symbolism. Films that completely puts a narrative plot aside to focus on tone and a deeper meaning, but fails to create something atmospheric or moody out of it. And I bloody hate it when there's not one interesting character in a film like that. There's no one to hold on to. Ryan Gosling's performance shouldn't even be called a performance. He's just there. What he's doing is not acting. It's called standing still.

I've never been so angry about a film in a long time. This was completely meaningless. It's beautifully shot, but I really don't give a damn about that. Nicolas Winding Refn must have gone for style over substance, but pile of turd is still a pile of turd. Even if you put a ribbon on it.

Trance (2013)
@ Blu-ray

The ending to Trance may feel like a cop-out, and the final minutes are sure to disappoint. But Danny Boyle has put together a fascinating film that pulls you in many directions with it's constantly changing twists and turns. It's easy too lose track of what's real and not, but that's part of the fun.

It's energetic filmmaking done very stylishly and intellectually, creating a rather mesmerizing experience that's as entertaining as it's sexy. If only Rosario Dawson could act...

Hitchcock (2012)
@ Blu-ray

I feel that this film is slightly underrated. It might not offer any real, dramatic or serious insight into Alfred Hitchcock and the making of Psycho, but what it delivers is an amusing and probably quite accurate portrayal of Hitchcock himself, and his marriage. It's rather light-hearted stuff, and it's very enjoyable.

Also slightly overlooked is Anthony Hopkins performance. I do honestly believe that it was worthy of an Oscar nomination. So was Helen Mirren's performance. Their relationship drives this film forward, and makes it not only an enjoyable experience, but also an interesting and curious watch.

I'm currently playing Pokémon Y on the Nintendo 3DS, so I've been seeing a lot of the Anime while playing. Now I took a break from the series, to revisit a film I haven't seen since I was like seven years or so.

It's essentially just a very stretched episode. The plot is not grand enough for it to justify it being a full-length feature film, and the same story could have been told in the 20 minutes an episode of the Anime usually lasts. This does especially become a problem in the second half, which is basically just very overlong battles between the original Pokémon's and their individual clones. And seeing as they then also look the same, it's impossible to know which one you're supposed to root for.

Another issue, one it shares with the Anime series, is that the three lead human characters are so bland, even more so this time.

Frozen (2013)
@ Cinema 3D

Frozen is a very cute film. It's filled with spectacular animation, loveable songs and charming characters. It's certain to be a hit amongst kids.

The only negative thing I have to say against it is that I didn't really feel there was much of a threat nor anything at stake here. But that's overshadowed by a lot of humour, wit, heart and charm.

Inception (2010)

@ Blu-ray

Christopher Nolan's Inception is quite simply my favourite film. It's perfection. Completely flawless. A modern masterpiece. That's how I view Inception. I just can't see anything in it that I don't love. Every time I see this film it's like a falling in love with a very cute girl. You're so full of love that you just can't see any flaws, and when a film manages to do that to me, even the tenth time I see it, I consider it to be proof of what an outstanding achievement Inception really is.

Now You See Me is a waste of talent more than anything else. Several great, talented actors are wasted on thinly written and poorly developed characters. Going into this film I naturally expected a preposterous plot with ridiculous twists and turns. Which is exactly what I got, and that itself I'm fine with. However, I'm not fine with an ending that's so completely illogical and preposterous as this ending. It's awe-inspiringly bad. One of the worst twist endings I've seen in a while.

In many ways it just feels like a visual spectacle, rather than an actual coherent story. It's big, fast-paced and all over the place. It's never a boring film, but it does turn into a frustrating one. I just didn't see the point of anything in it.

@ Random Internet site

If you're not familiar with Red Letter Media, then you should check them out immediately on Youtube or redlettermedia.com.

This is a full-length feature film created by a small group of friends with a very limited budget. It's a B-horror film that pays homage to the old puppet monster films, such as Gremlins for instance. And considering the very small production values of this film, they've managed to create something that's rather impressive. It's full of great looking practical gore effects, amusingly looking puppets and monster outfits, and there's quite a lot of Red Letter Media's trademark humour to be found here.

It's a very silly and extremely random film. And unless you're a fan of Red Letter Media and their type of humour, I'm having a hard time seeing that this film would be for you. If you enjoy them other hand, then you should definitely check it out.

Listing the films I see in 2014. Seeing as I last year didn't see that many films, I decided to put to months together, rather than have a list for each month.
