Bml93's Film Diary for 2013: May

Sort by: Showing 8 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
Ended up watching disappointingly seven films this month and two seasons of a TV-show. That's mainly thanks to school and exams.

Best film: Silver Linings Playbook
Worst film: Dumbo

Quentin Tarantino's latest is a real crowd-pleaser. A film for the audience. A film that set's its goal to entertain with memorable characters, clever writing, exploding action and devilish humour, while still managing to delve into important themes of slavery and such.

Christoph Waltz should stick with Tarantino, Samuel L. Jackson gives his best performance in many years and Leonardo DiCaprio got snubbed at the Oscars. Django Unchained is a quality film in every level.

I was never a fan of Dumbo when I was younger, and after seeing it again now, I can safely say that I'm still not a fan of this flying elephant. Dumbo is just dull. It fails to evoke any kind of emotion in me, which is rather strange, seeing as Disney usually does that with ease. But now I'm left completely untouched during the 60 minutes this film lasts.

The animation is naturally great when you're considering the time it was made, but there exists so many films that are terrifically animated (even from that decade) that manages to bring out a sense of emotion, wonder or simple fun. Dumbo doesn't do that. It looks good, but that's it.

Ted (2012)
@ Blu-ray

I would suggest that Ted is better off when you're only watching particular moments of it. There are some scenes that are very funny, and some are even hilarious, but seeing the film as a whole, it feels like a slight disappointment.

The reason for that is quite simple. The "girlfriend vs. best friend" story wears out its welcome quite fast, despite the twist on the story. Once you've been used to the fact that Ted is a teddy bear, it's all pretty familiar stuff with some occasionally crude (and funny) humour.

Monsters vs. Aliens had the potential to be a spectacular animated monster feature, but it never managed to deliver upon the premise of its title, and is ultimately a huge let down. It's a soulless special effects showcase. A talented voice cast is wasted upon characters that doesn't bring any charm, heart or humour to the screen.

Worse is the awkward attempt to toss in so many references as possible. It didn't work. I rarely laughed and when the credits started, all I had left was a bitter taste in my mouth.

This is how to create a brilliant rom-com. Instead of stuffing the film with those whimsical, silly and now downright annoying things that seems to massacre that genre, David O. Russell creates a rom-com that's grounded in reality. Everything in this film feels real. And that's because it features top-notch performances, a superb script that manages to tackle troublesome thematics while being emotionally engaging and humorous, and efficient directing.

This is one of those rare film experiences that manages to suck me in from the very first second. I loved every second of it, and if every rom-com from now on will be able to provide the same kind of freshness, affection and humour to them, this genre should have quite good future. But somehow, I doubt that any other film in that genre will be able to live up to the new standard set by Silver Linings Playbook.

Season 11 & 12

@ DVD

The Simpsons is not as roll-out-of-the-chair-and-spin-around-on-the-floor-while-laughing-hysterically as it was when I was younger, but I do still find it very amusing.
8/10 to both seasons.

Argo (2012)
@ Blu-ray

The Academy Award winning film Argo is a perfect example of a film that's almost perfectly crafted in every section. It's a terrific film. It's entertaining, clever and full of tension. The acting is superb, Ben Affleck is really showcasing himself as a masterful director and the story is skilfully told. Argo is simply a film that should be cherished.

But it's still lacking something, and in my eyes, Affleck's first directing feature, Gone Baby Gone is still his best work. Argo is lacking the extra sparkle or ingredients that would require me to absolutely love this film. But it's almost perfect.

If you're going to introduce young children to classic film monsters, you're better of showing them Frankenweenie or Paranorman. Hotel Transylvania ain't a bad film. It's entertaining enough to kill some time.

But some awkward father/daughter moments and too childish jokes makes this less enjoyable than what it could have been. You can only take so much of Adam Sandler sounding like a weird Italian guy before you go mad.

Let's see what I see in May. If I got the time for such things.
