Bml93's Film Diary for 2013: June

Movie list created by Bml93 Avatar

Sort by: Showing 20 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
I ended up watching more films this month than previously. That's good. 19 films, 1 TV-series season. Three re-watches. One trip to the cinema.

Best film: Edward Scissorhands (excluding Game of Thrones)
Worst film: The ABCs of Death

Total Recall (2012)
@ Blu-ray

I don't remember an awful lot from the original Paul Verhoeven film, besides it being charmingly funny and entertaining. This 2012 update upgrades the special effects with heavy dozens of impressive CGI and action sequences, but it lacks the charm and wit of the original.

It does get a bit to fixed on delivering huge, massive and overwhelming action scenes. By doing so, the film forgets that it's premise is actually quite interesting and that there's room for some great characters. The talent of the actors involved are wasted. Bill Nighy and Bryan Cranston's character's could've been played by anyone. Colin Farrell is meh, and the two actresses doesn't come off as anything but eye-candy.

Julia's Eyes (2010)
@ Blu-ray

There are parts of Julia's Eyes that are slightly frustrating. Like character's doing completely illogical things simply for the sake of plot progressions, but those things are to a certain degree forgiveable when you look at the things Julia's Eyes does right.

It's at times a masterpiece in tension. Rich atmosphere, an unpredictable story and clever references to other horror films. This is a film that just feels unsettling, and if it weren't for some annoyances, this could've been one of the absolute best horror films in recent years. Now, it's just extremely good.

Beautiful Creatures does in some ways appeal to the same kind of group of people as Twilight did. And I'm fine with that. I'm a sucker for cute teenage love stories with charming leads. And Beautiful Creatures has exactly that, and because of that, I really enjoyed the first half of this film. Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert shows some real chemistry and I did totally fell for them.

But, the film is seriously lacking something to keep it going during the last half. For me, they could've just kept on showing these two teenagers doing cute, romantic stuff. But instead they have to have some kind of plot that I never get to understand completely, and everything wraps up before I could even sense some kind of threat. Then, after that, the film just ends in a way that didn't satisfy. I wanted Ethan to run up to Lena and to have Lena jump in his arms, and everything would be cute and sweet. Yeah. That should have been the last image.

Wreck-It Ralph's moral has been done to death before, and is starting to get really tiresome. But despite that, this is an extremely well-animated feature film with a lot of heart and emotion. The humour is often funny, the references are neat, and thankfully, not too many. There's a focus on the story here, and not just a bunch of possible cameos. Which is good.

The film moves ahead with frenetic pace, and the cutesy, colourful visuals of "Sugar Rush" does end up as being a bit too much eventually. Still, Wreck-It Ralph proved to be a lot of fun.

Broken City (2013)
@ Blu-ray

There are aspects of Broken City that could lead to a much better film, or at least a more entertaining one. It features some great actors and an ordinary, but usually solid premise. But the film doesn't deliver. It's just a weak effort, and one film that few people are going to remember at all.

The best thing in this film is Alona Tal, who has a supporting role as Mark Wahlberg's secretary or something. She's great and has some good chemistry with Wahlerg. Sadly, that's a part of the story that's only hinted at, but ultimately leads nowhere. Which can be said about a lot of things in this film. There are very few things in it that leads to anything. And by that, it just falls flat.

26 directors. 26 letters. 26 short films. Each of them are trying to shock, disgust or offend you in one way or another. Like most anthology films, there are some parts that are better than others. Here however, with the exception of two-four segments that were good or decent, they all range from just plain uninteresting and instantly forgetful, to shockingly bad and distasteful.

"D for Dogfight" is easily the most impressive of them, with "T for Toilet" and "Q for Quack" being slightly amusing. "M for Miscarriage" is the dullest and least inspired of them, which is a surprise, seeing as it was made by Ti West. While "F for Fart" is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life.

Gangster Squad is an entertaining film, despite it offering nothing new to this genre. It's a stylish effort with huge stars and a lot of gunfire. So by that, I was never bored. That's something.

But it's full of clichรฉs, over-the-top acting (Sean Penn) and characters who are never fleshed out (Emma Stone). So, it's never terrible, never good, but merely okay.

Bml93's rating:
@ Blu-ray

Based on the LEGO Batman 2 video-game and partly working as a 70 minute long ad to sell LEGO toys to young children, this film was actually quite good. It's a non-stop thrill-ride with loads of humour and engaging action sequences, accompanied with several amusing references.

The animation is absolutely gorgeous. It's consistently funny, with the exception of a few misses. The story is simple, but very enjoyable and it manages to blend in the DC universe in a satisfying way. I do personally wish that some of the other heroes/villains could have gotten some more screen time, but I do realize the difficulties that would've made. But anyway, don't be disheartened by this film because it's a LEGO-film. It's still very entertaining.

Jack Reacher (2012)
@ Blu-ray

Say whatever you want about Tom Cruise as a person, but as an actor I find him very likeable. And that's something that happened once again in Jack Reacher, which is his go at a character that could easily be mistaken for Sherlock Holmes. Anyway, I think that Cruise's performance (as well as Robert Duvall's and Werner Herzog's) lifts Jack Reacher to higher level quality-wise than what the actual story deserves.

The actual story is nothing special, but it's handled in a way that I found to be entertaining. It's a competently made action/thriller that could have been even better with a greater story.

Man of Steel (2013)
@ Cinema

Man of Steel didn't live up to my expectations. Not because it was humourless. I don't need every superhero-film to be a fuckings comedy, so I was cool with that. But because the first half of the film is really struggling. It constant change in time feels awkward, as it doesn't really explore anything of how Superman ends up as being Superman. It's mainly just big action set-pieces with forced, obvious poetic dialogue that tries to find the beauty in humanity. It doesn't work as very few of the things we see gets enough time to sink in. Making Superman feel like a generic superhero.

But with that said, I was entertained. The last half is one big, entertaining action scene. Zack Snyder is a true master when it comes to creating spectacular visuals and Man of Steel is no exception in that department. But Mr. Snyder needs to learn that there's more to films than visuals.

Much of the same thing that could be said about Wrong Turn 2 can be said about this film as well. It's a disgusting film, with very few redeeming qualities. But, that's to be expected. So it's all about how trashy and entertaining it can be.

In that department, I would say that it's at times more entertaining than Wrong Turn 2, but my overall impression is that I had more fun with 2 as well. This film is lacking a bit when it comes to kills and gore, and it could have used more mutants and less though-guy-talk between the convicts. It's also a no-no to use up the film's tits & ass in the first minutes.

This is by no means a good film. This is absolutely and totally a bad film. If you want a good, smart film, or a clever horror film, don't see this one. If you, however, are in dire need to see a really trashy B horror film, this could be it.

It's a disgusting, gory and bad film that occasionally rips off other film, but it does partly save itself by offering some decent entertainment value. There are some great kills in this film, particularly the opening kill. The order of who's going to die is at times surprising, and there's enough tits & ass in it. It's trashy fun, but it's fun. At times. Probably even more after drinking a beer or two. Or six.

Fright Night (2011)
@ Blu-ray

I've not seen the original, so I can't really compare them or anything like that, but based on what I've seen in this remake, I would say that one should dismiss a remake immediately. This was an extremely fun and well-crafted film. A true blast.

It's smart, stylish, funny and it does occasionally manage to handle suspense quite well. Lead by a number of good performances, particularly from Colin Farrell (who I usually don't like) and David Tennant, this is the kind of vampire film they should make more of.

This is a simple, straight-forward film that might lack some of the ambition that other Disney features have had. But whatever it lacks in ambition, it makes up for a pure form of delight and entertainment value. This is a really funny film.

It's short, fast-paced and with many funny characters. The laughs are always there, thanks too some well-placed jokes and funny set-pieces.

Twixt (2012)
@ Blu-ray

It's hard to imagine that the same director that created The Godfather-trilogy also helmed this ludicrous piece of dirt. This is in every shape and form an awful film. Coppola dishes up some neat visuals, but that's the only positive thing that can be said about this stinker.

It's not even close to being scary or suspenseful, it's completely lacking in mood and atmosphere and the plot is so silly that one might think that Coppola is just trolling us. Add to that some weak acting, and you got yourself a really bad film that ought to be burned.

Despite having Jennifer Lawrence as the lead character, this is a bland and completely forgettable horror/thriller that doesn't offer anything we haven't seen before.

It's lacking every necessary ingredient in order to make a successful horror film. It's never even remotely scary, it's lacking suspense and thrills, and is overall just very lame.

SEASON 3

@ Filmnet.no

Usually I would wait for it to arrive on blu-ray here in Norway, but I was forced to watch it now on my computer because of the fact that it would probably be impossible to avoid having the huge, shocking ninth episode spoiled for so long. And by that, I would like to give every news site here in Norway a huge thanks for telling me that there was a major "twist" in the ninth episode. Now, when I saw it, I was just waiting for something to happen and by doing so I was able to think myself to what was probably going to be so "shocking" as the news sites put it. Therefore, when it finally happened, the impact wasn't as strong as it could have been (even if it still made my jaw drop). Some people just don't get that even if you don't mention exactly what the "twist" is, just to mention that there is a huge fucking "twist" is often enough to destroy the surprise.)

Anyway, this is for me easily the greatest TV-series out there. I don't watch a lot, but all the conflicts, intrigues, drama, violence, sex and surprises has made me a huge Game of Thrones fan. This is quality of the highest standard, and if one is a fan of medieval-like fantasy this is a top pick.

Nosferatu (1922)
Re-watched

This is an important film, and one I had to re-watch due to my exam in German expressionism. I saw this one all the way through, and parts of Dr. Caligari.

It's in many ways a masterpiece of a horror film, particularly when you look at the time it was created, but there's something about the final act that struggles a bit, for my personal taste.

It doesn't necessarily win me over on the emotional scale as Edward Scissorhands do, but I find this film to be incredibly awesome due to grotesque and macabre story, and there's something delightfully amusing about it being a musical.

It's visually great, the performances are superb, it's surprising and basically everything you'd want from a Tim Burton film.

If it weren't for the fact that Tim Burton created a wonderful film that's called Big Fish, this would be his greatest film. And that's saying a lot considering his huge range of delightful films (at least according to me).

Edward Scissorhands can in many ways be said to be a modern version of Das Cabinet der Dr. Caligari. At least the references are obvious, but Edward Scissorhands is a charmingly, macabre and funny surreal film that evokes huge emotions in me.

With all of exams done, and summer coming up, let's see if there's time to watch some more films than what I've done the last months.
