Bml93's Film Diary for 2013: July

Sort by: Showing 22 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
The number of films i've seen this month was quite higher than what I've seen the last few months, despite me going to Denmark for a whole week.

Best film: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2
Worst film: The Apparition

Technically excellent and beautifully shot. The acting is superb, and the ultraviolence and sheer brutality is enjoyable, if one is cool with violence in films. If not, there's really no reason at all to see this film.

This is a film that repeats itself a lot. Probably on purpose in order to state how meaningless revenge and violence actually is. But by doing so the film ends up dragging endlessly, and the brutality in the various scenes lose their impact. The narrative goes basically something like this: man catches murderer. Man maims murderer. Man releases murderer. Man does the same thing again. The commentary on revenge is as I said obvious, but the repetitiveness in the plot points doesn't seem successful for me.

This film is trash. It knows it's trash and it plays on that. It's simple escapism. It's short, fast-paced and it features an incredibly over-the-top performance from John Travolta. It also feature some of the most obvious references to Pulp Fiction.

This is a film you could nit-pick to death. You could easily give it a 1/10, but what would be the point of that? It's not aiming to be anything more than very simple entertainment, and it does mostly succeed in delivering exactly that.

This is a difficult film to judge. It's not the kind of film you see everyday. It's a film that has several positive things about it, and it's a film that's filled with really strange choices and off-putting things. There are single moments that stands out, which are completely mesmerising. One of those moments is a montage with a Britney Spears song. And overall, this is a quite nicely shot film. It looks exceptionally well.

But the Spring Breakers is also quite annoying. It features quite a lot of scenes of people, particularly girls, with few clothes on them partying heavily and doing stuff that would make their parents disown them. This, with the help of some dialogue that's being said over and over again, makes Spring Breakers feel extremely repetitive. It doesn't work. It's not as deep as it thinks it is and it just comes across as pretty shallow. But the visuals and the ability the film has to draw me in some sort of trance should be admired.

Warm Bodies (2013)
@ Blu-ray

Warm Bodies offers a fresh and unique twist on your typical zombie or rom-com films. The combination of those two genres have resulted in a film that's quite often hilariously funny. It's a charming, cute, tender and odd love story with some impressive performances.

The supporting characters are a bit poorly characterised, particularly John Malkovich. It seemed rather pointless having him to play that character, and I do sit with a feeling that everything wrapped itself up too easy.

Not as good as I remembered it to be, but it still manages to be a slight cut above other films in the same genre, due to some charming leads and some cleverness. Due to that, this film manages to be cute and sweet, without getting too much.

It's still a film that's very clich├ęd and predictable. It does also struggle a bit in showing when Heath Ledger's character got real feelings for Julia Stiles, and the ending solves itself a bit too nicely. But it's a fun film nonetheless.

The last part of the adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel is really dark. But oh my, it's damn good. It's quite brutal and bloody stuff, as well. Not really anything for young children. Unless they can find some enjoyment in The Joker going on a real killing spree. And speaking of The Joker, I liked this version of him a lot. Simply because of his brutality. But this last part is honestly all about the confrontation between Batman and Superman. Which is handled perfectly. Note that I haven't read the graphic novel, so I don't know how its been interpreted, but from what I've understood, it follows Miller's vision pretty closely.

I think the lead up to final fight against Superman is build up quite well throughout Batman's fight against The Joker. It's the final confrontation between those two, that leads up to Batman and Superman's final confrontation and it's quite powerful stuff that hits on an emotional scale and on a "holy shit, that's awesome" level.

I've never read the Frank Miller graphic novel, which is something I seriously should do. So upon seeing this film I had no clue what it was all about, and I couldn't compare it to the graphic novel in any way. Still, it's a film that I enjoyed.

It's a film that succeeds on a emotional level more than anything. The film perfectly captures Bruce Wayne's inner struggle when he is no longer Batman, and there's a whole layer of depression and fear surrounding Gotham and the film itself. Making the moment when Batman returns feel extremely powerful, with his climatic final battle stand out as the rise of Batman. It's done exceptionally well on an emotional level.

I do have some slight issues with it, though. Robin. No matter what, I can't bring myself to like Robin. No matter how important she (it's a female here) is as a character, I've always disliked Robin. I do also think that some of the voice acting is a bit monotonous and the animation in the beginning looked cheap and hastily done. But I thought this was overall quite good.

Have noticed that this film has been labelled as a horror film. It's not. It's a weird thriller that doesn't really make any sense. And that's because the pacing is completely wrong. The first 40 minutes are very boring. Then there are 40 vaguely interesting minutes, until it suddenly ends and when it ended all I ended up thinking was: what was the point of it?

But worse than the meaningless plot and rushed ending is the editing of the film. As I've said, the pacing is awful, but it's also at times edited as quick and flashy Danny Boyle goes horror-thingy that completely draws me out of the film. The way it constantly also tries to incorporate home video footage is also bad.

The Wolverine (2013)
@ Cinema

While being slightly better than Wolverine's last film, The Wolverine is still a step behind the rest of the X-Men films. Tedious opening minutes, flat supporting characters and an unmemorable villain makes this film a minor disappointment. Particularly when it comes to the villain. Yes, the focus may lie on Wolverine and that part of the film is decent enough, but every superhero film needs a good villain. The Wolverine lacks that completely, and therefore, the stakes are never set high enough for me to be that engaged in the film.

But Wolverine himself is handled well, and I do like his interactions with the cute Tao Okamoto's character. It's when those two bond, the tedious opening minutes are over and the film gets entertaining. Because despite my complaints, this is an entertaining film with some solid action sequences.

SEASON 6

@ DVD

No exactly my kind of TV show, but my girlfriend loves the series, so I've been watching it alongside her. Season 6 does finally mark the end of a series that's only been decent in my eyes. With the final season being the weakest as everything turned out to end up as predicted. Which is disappointing as I were hoping that they would manage to pull some surprises, but even the reveal of who Gossip Girl was didn't surprise me at all. It's been obvious for quite some time that it was Dan.

The season has it moments of enjoyable intrigues and schemes, as well as some funny moments. But the series has always been haltered by some very annoying characters, like Serena, providing for some really facepalm moments. But I recognize that this was not made for me to begin with. So instead of going on about what I would consider gigantic flaws, I find myself to rather appreciate the fact that the final minutes of the last episode made my girlfriend shed some tears. That's something.

Not the film I would watch with... anyone. There's simply too much female nudity in it, making it surely to become awkward if I were to see it with anyone else. Luckily I didn't, and I enjoyed this film. Not only for the very obvious reasons, but because I thought this was a very cute film. Gorgeously shot, some decent music and a romantic plot that never gets overly sweet and sugary. And it manages to be rather thoughtful about love and such.

It might be a bit too artsy for some, and the many sex scenes are surely to put some viewers off, not to mention that the rather poetic dialogue might come of as very unrealistic. Personally, I didn't have a problem with that. I did however have a problem with the few comedic elements it had. They didn't really work and put me out of the film for a slight moment. Other than that, I thought this was good stuff.

What we have here is one of the worst films in recent years, particularly in the horror genre. The Apparition is a massive failure in every single department. From the unbelievably lousy script to the amateurish direction. The "what the heck"-editing to the misplaced soundtrack. Combine this with weak actors portraying unlikeable characters, doing incredibly stupid things that they won't even do in other terrible horror films, and you've got yourself a real stinker.

Playing out as a some sort of mixture between Paranormal Activity and The Grudge this film is lacking everything for it to be even a somewhat decent film. It's never even remotely scary, tension is absent and there is no atmosphere to be found. This is a film that's more likely to put you to sleep than send chills down your spine.

It's not very often you get to witness Kevin Costner in a horror film, but he does pull off a solid performance. Unfortunately, the film doesn't hold up and is a waste of Costner's involvement.

This film is just boring. It tries to slowly build tension up towards a huge climax, but nothing in the scenes leading up towards the climax is even remotely interesting. Instead its frustratingly dull and similar to several other, more successful, films in the same genre. The ending is awful.

This is a well-crafted and intelligent film with some terrific acting (aside from Keira Knightley's odd accent). And it was almost only a matter of time before David Cronenberg tackled a film that deals with psychology as much as this film does. But it could have been better.

This is a film that it's easy to fall of, it's basically all about smart people having intelligent discussions, meaning that it's easy to get a bit lost if you doze off a bit. That's not a flaw, though. To be able to pay attention should be rewarded. Unfortunately, A Dangerous Method doesn't reward you in the end. This is a cold and sterile film that's superb on a technical level, but unsatisfying on an emotional level.

This film has gotten quite a lot of negative feedback (rottentomatoes rating), but I honestly enjoyed it. It was a very entertaining western. Naturally, to avoid comparing it to Pirates of the Caribbean is inevitable. Tonto is in some ways Captain Jack Sparrow all over again, but then again, I liked Pirates of the Caribbean. Some people have had an issue with the tone of the film, as it goes from being a funny Disney film to people cutting out hearts and such. But that's how I like my westerns. Funny, yet slightly brutal. So that was never a problem for me.

It may drag on a little bit long, there were certainly several possible places to end the film before the final climax. But seeing as it kept on being constantly entertaining all the way through, it was easy to go along for the ride. The climax is naturally so over the top it's almost ridiculous, but as long as it's done entertainingly I'm fine with it. And William Fichtner is awesome.

Hysteria (2011)
@ Blu-ray

Hysteria has an interesting, amusing and rather odd premise, but the film fails to deliver on that said premise. Instead it plays out as a rather safe period piece that doesn't manage to decide on what tone it's going for. There are moments in here, but it never achieves true heights.

It is ultimately brought down by a script that goes for safety, instead of the wildness and freshness the premise requires. Hysteria might have been better if it dropped Maggie Gyllenhaal's fight for this-and-that.

SEASON 5

I've overall liked every season of True Blood equally. I find them to be very entertaining, and it's certainly one of the best TV series around that features vampires, werewolves, fairies etc.

It's not my favourite season out of them, but it's pretty close to being so. I'm partly grateful that they've gone away from the romance that was a huge part of the first seasons, and focuses this time more on survival and vampire politics. That's entertaining.

I liked Paranoid Park and I do completely understand anyone that might dislike or hate it. It's not for everyone and it's not a film I'm ever going to recommend to anyone. The film tells a very simple story, that could've easily been told as a short film, but this film isn't too much about the actual story. It does instead focus on capturing the feeling that a burdened teenager may go through, and the plot unfolds itself in a way that makes it easy for myself as a former teenager (I just turned 20) to relate too.

It's one of those films that I liked, but can't truly explain in words why I really liked it. Because it's all about the feeling it gives you and a feeling can be really hard to explain at times. However, there are certain things about it that I didn't really like. I'm not certain if some of the "long shots of nothing happening" scenes really worked, and I do think that some of them could have been cut out. And I would have liked less home video skateboarding sequences. I don't like skateboarding.

While I do basically love everything that Tim Burton touches, I do almost always prefer his more *personal* work. Frankenweenie is a film like that, and that's why it's one of his best. A beautifully crafted, magnificent horror adventure in elegant black & white.

Frankenweenie is a touching, heartwarming, macabre and wonderful film on its own, while still being a wonderful homage to older horror classics. It's an emotional journey, where it should be hard to not get affected by the massive amount of warmth that Frankenweenie offers.

A Perfect Getaway is a cut above many other similar films in this genre. Particularly when you look at the firs hour of it, where it focuses on creating fully developed characters that you can connect with, making whatever that's going to happen next mean something. It's all build up, and it's done good.

Unfortunately, once everything is revealed and the curtain drawn, the film falls into the trap that so many other films have done before. It's turned into a long flashy, bloody and predictable action scene. How disappointing.

Was unsure if I had actually seen it or not before. It turned out that I had as I quickly remembered stuff about it. I don't remember when I saw it though, but I think it's safe to say that it's some years ago. Nevertheless, this is among the best Bond films, or at least what I would consider to be the most classic Bond film. It just follows the formula we've come to know and love to perfection.

A memorable villain, a memorable Bond girl (at least in name), witty one-liners, solid action scenes, charming Bond, gadgets etc. The ingredients are all there, and it's just fun and entertaining. Which is what we want from a Bond film.

MacGruber is either one of two things. It's either going to disgust you and not amuse you at all, or you're going to find it to be funny. I'm in the last category. I thought that MacGruber was overall a funny film.

It does rely more on shock value than clever humour, but then again, this is not that kind of film. It works for what it is and it was much better than I dared to hope for. It's naturally stupid, silly and all that, but fuck that. I laughed. I can imagine this film being a good choice when accompanied by a group of friends and some alcoholic beverages.
