Fast Five (2011)

In all honesty I wasn't expecting a ton from 'Fast Five'. The previous installments were solid albeit far too conventional and forgettable (exception: 'Fast and Furious') and I figured they'd just lazily throw together another by-the-books action flick. What I came away with was quite the opposite, actually. While 'Fast Five' may not excel in the areas of intelligence or originality, almost any action fan will be impressed by 'Fast Fives' ability to entertain at a high and consistent level. You will never be bored while watching this, as there is never a dull moment. A lot of action pictures entertain, but not many do it in the manly and consistent level in which 'Fast Five' manages to maintain. A brainless gem, and so far the best of 2011.

Cedar Rapids (2011)

Ed Helms isn't a highly known comedic star, nor a big time leading actor. Having said that, 'Cedar Rapids' should be considered the introduction to what could eventually make him one. This film flew way under the radar, not many people have seen it, and I haven't come across many who've liked it. Why? perhaps the comedy isn't their cup of tea. Or, maybe it was too slow for most. To me, 'Cedar Rapids' shines by way of pure charm. Not every character is likeable at first, but one way or another, by the end, they will have an impact on you. It's a great depiction of human behavior and growth, all the while maintaining a steady dose of feel-good humor. It grew on me, that's for sure.

Over the years Steve Carell has proved he can act not only in a comedic fashion, but in a serious one too. Starring in such things like 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin', 'Get Smart' and the hit television series 'The Office', it wasn't easy picturing him performing well in a purely dramatic role. 'Crazy Stupid Love' just may be the best performance I've ever seen him put on. He's at times absolutely hysterical, when necessary, but also shows some great skill in portraying a heartbroken husband, unleashing the right emotions, facial gestures and dialogue to really entrench himself into his character. 'Crazy Stupid Love' doesn't exactly tread in new water. In fact, the premise is rather been there done that. What draws me into this movie are the multifaceted characters, intertwining storylines and very well played out comedic timing. If you enjoy smart comedy, 'Crazy Stupid Love' is for you. A fresh dramedy, and one of the best of 2011.

Paul (2011)

Another comedy featuring the likes of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, but this time taking them on a whole new journey. 'Paul' doesn't really come close to capturing the comedic wit held within 'Hot Fuzz', and is rather dull during some points. However, I loved the clever little premise, and Seth Rogen nails his role to perfection, as the raunchy alien. The laughs are fairly inconsistent, but the undeniable chemistry between Pegg and Frost will more than likely warm up most viewers. Added to that, Rogen's dialogue impresses for the most part, and his fans will not be displeased.

Scream 4 (2011)

Its insane how the 'Scream' franchise has held up. I've seen all four now, and each installment somehow brings a fresh experience to the table. The characters are key for this franchise, one of the best ensembles I've ever seen, as without the chemistry factor, these movies would lose A LOT of value. Added to that, the way they are all crafted into a mystery/thriller really boosts up the enjoyment. 'Scream 4' is no exception, as it still follows the standards set by Craven's first three films. Good stuff, I hope they make a fifth.

You really do have to change your mindset in order to obtain the utmost enjoyment out of any 'PA' film. Its made fun of a lot, trashed for being really cheesy and stupid. However, those of us who enjoy this type of thing, or the ones who can pay attention for fifteen seconds, will find these 'Paranormal Activity' movies quite worthwhile. The third one happens to be the scariest of the bunch, and the most intelligent. I very much recommend it, but know what your about to watch beforehand.

The Dilemma (2011)

Another universally hated film, that I happened to really enjoy. 'The Dilemma' is driven primarily by the hilarious way Vaughn and James play off each other. They are both very funny human beings, and this just showcases that even more. Its not exactly thought provoking or smart, but those into dark humor, and/or James or Vaughn, should take a liking to 'The Dilemma'.

'No Strings' shows us virtually nothing new. Every cliche is there, the plot is predictable, and at times, some of the scenes are very irritating. But, what sticks out so much in 'No Strings Attached' is the absolutely mesmerizing Natalie Portman. I've always thought she was an angel, but I came to my senses even more so after seeing this. From a personal stand-point, there isn't a prettier actress out there. Teaming up with Ashton Kutcher results in a wee bit of awkwardness, as Kutcher never really seems one-hundred percent properly cast. As the film goes on, though, he grew on me. It didn't help that he was completely overshadowed by Portman, though. Overall, 'No Strings Attached' doesn't take any new leaps, but the spectacular Portman, and a pretty solid supporting cast make for a nice bit of entertainment, that surpasses 'Friends With Benefits' by a slim margin.

J. Edgar (2011)
The Cinephile's rating:

The mystery surrounding Michael Jackson's death has been a hot topic for a good while now. Most think he surely is deceased, and can't even consider the conspiracy held within the apparent "tragic death" of MJ. I assure you, that, after viewing this documentary, you will be in favor of his current existence. I understand the topic is a sensitive one. MJ's family, and the media really don't want anyone bugging in on the situation. So, I ask you to watch 'Alive! Is Michael Jackson Really Dead?' with an open mind. Think for yourself, have your own opinion, and let this very well made, low budget documentary capture your attention. I honestly believe "The King of Pop' may very well be alive.
