Final Fantasy Tactics Reviews

Final Fantasy Tactics is a sad attempt by Square to produce an addition to the genre already largely perfected by our friends at Intelligent Systems, makers of the Fire Emblem series. The menus and controls in FF Tactics are poorly laid-out, the plot is not particularly compelling, and the graphical limitations of the console overwhelm the notion of fun in 3d. FF Tactics is more a failed prototype of the Disgaea series to follow years later than it is a legitimate entry into the srpg/trpg field. Tutorials are fairly poor, gameplay is less enjoyable than in other games of the genre, and overall, this title truly lets down the vaunted Final Fantasy franchise.

Years after the fact, it's still probably the best tactical RPG ever. The battle system was fun enough to take me through multiple playthroughs. And of all the RPGs I played in my adolescence, the FFT storyline is one of the few I sometimes still think about -- the closest thing to Shakespearean in execution I've seen in an RPG.
