Best Action game in years

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 7 December 2022 02:15

I'm not usually one to play action games, more of an rpg fan, but there was something about this title that simply drew me in. Bayonetta isn't just another hottie with weapons, she knows how to use them and this game proves that over and over again.

I'll admit the plot is a bit simplistic. You are a witch who woke up at the bottom of the lake 20 years ago with no memories of your past, all you know is that every once in a while, angels try to send you to hell. Your henchman Enzo has located a rare gem that may clear up events of your past, so you set out on a journey to the island of Vigrid, a place filled with memories.

The cut scenes are over-the-top action-packed, and a little reminiscent of how Dante would roll in Devil May Cry. But Bayonetta actually makes it look good! Still, the best part is naturally the action. Combat has a very smooth flow to it that allows for a high number of combos with which to dispatch your angelic antagonists. Weapons ranging from simple handguns to claws, to swords, and even a whip, Bayonetta should have something in her repertoire for just about anyone. Not to mention, you can attach weapons to either your hands or feet in order to create some very unique combat combinations.

But don't be fooled, this isn't exactly a ride in the park either. The first play-through on normal is probably not that much of a challenge for anyone familiar with the genre, but that doesn't cover the extra content. There are portals to the angel's world all over the place with difficult challenges to complete, two harder difficulty modes, and several out-of-reach secrets that will require dexterity and acumen to discover. Best of all, almost everything you do has some manner of reward attached to it, so be prepared to spend a lot of hours on this.

All in all, I haven't had this much fun beating up things in a long time. The dialog is cheesy, the action is ridiculously bloody, and Bayonetta's boobs are way too huge for a human, but when put together this is a very potent combination. So put down DMC 4, forget about Dante's Inferno, get this game!

Bayonetta review

What a fantastic game! It completely immersed me from its brilliant opening. The story actually has a great deal of thought put into it especially with how everything was introduced to the player.

Bayonetta review

Bayonetta review

If you're looking for the most insane, over-the-top, sexy, action-packed mega-epic video game ever, then Bayonetta is the game for you! The game plays very similarly to Devil May Cry (mostly because it's from the same director), with fast-paced hacking and slashing and a complex, yet not too difficult, combo system. The enemies vary greatly, and so do the monstrous boss fights, from an arena fight to a surfing battle, so it never gets boring. Bayonetta also has one of the most potentially cataclysmic stories in any video game, dealing with amnesia, Heaven & Hell, and global "rebirth", even if it has some of the most immensely cheesy characters and dialogue anyone has heard. One of the craziest video games I've ever played, and recommended for anyone who wants to have tons of fun slicing and shooting baddies!

TOUGH!

First things first: this game is TOUGH. Not "I can't beat this level my thumbs are bleeding" tough, but "I may never fully master the insane amount of weapon/challenges/unique combos in the game, but am gonna stay up way past my bedtime trying" tough. It's a true throwback in the sense that Bayonetta will give you your money's worth. That covers several things, but for me it's the sense that even after beating it you'll gladly go back again trying to master the challenging (even frustrating) aspects of the game. The striking thing about this game is how well the combos link together, and how the slo-mo witch time feels perfectly integrated into the gameplay. The various weapons and guns are fun, but dang, that combo system is what nails this game as THE greatest action game made by SEGA. If not mastering the various bosses, achievements, and special items, you could spend all day just watching the cut scenes. Overall, it's been worth every penny I spent on it. All you need to know about Bayonetta is that if you liked 16-bit japanese action games, the kind that required precise timing, pattern memorization, and reflexes, this is up your alley.
