One of the greatest backfires I can remember happening to me in recent years was watching Mulan for the sole purpose of filling myself with the very specific type of smugness that Disney live-action haters get from shitting on Disney live-action remakes. I should know - I'm one of them. Mulan was supposed to be the absolute worst, bottom of the barrel piece of scum of the lot, but I guess that kind of praise only worked as an unintentional cushion of expectations.
I couldn't help it. Right off the bat, the stunning visuality completely absent from the previous remakes hit me like a kick in the face and immersed me in its world. It has this elevated quality you'd wish from a cinematic experience, but also real; not computer-generated, but actual sets, props and costumes (oh god, the costumes) with their own distinct textures properly photographed, and not just color-graded in postproduction.
Then comes the total misunderstanding of original Mulan's message: instead of Mulan evolving into a fighter, live-action Mulan adheres to a harmful notion of assuming you are perfect from the start. You don't need to evolve.
Annnnnndddddd I couldn't hate that either. I saw it reflect reality (in a utopian fashion) of the status quo repressing capable, qualified people because of who they're born as, not because of their lack of skills. In the age of (buzzword warning) vilifying and dismantling DEI this only rings truer and truer.
