The teen comedy School Rumble (2004) centers on a skewed romantic triangle. Perky Tenma Tsukamoto, who describes herself as an average high school sophomore, nurtures a gritty crush on her classmate Oji Karasuma. But Karasuma is so oblivious to everything, he wouldn't look up if Tenma set off firecrackers under his desk. Her general klutziness doesn't help the campaign to his win his heart: she leaves a multi-page love letter in his locker, but forgets to sign it. Johnny Depp-esque bad boy Kenji Harima is completely smitten with Tenma, but he's even more maladroit than she is. The series is funniest when Tenma and Kenji plan parallel schemes that backfire in different ways. Surveying the situation, one of Tenma's friends observes, "This doesn't bode well for the rest of the school year." School Rumble never attains the take-no-prisoners nuttiness of Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu! but director Shinji Takamatsu provides lots of laughs with spoofs of everything from Inu-Yasha to the Matrix movies. The Starter Set comes with a tin box shaped like a high school locker and a mini-yearbook from Yagami High. (Rated TV PG: suitable for ages 12 and older: comic violence, risquรฉ humor) --Charles Solomon
