Annaluise has rich parents who are so busy with social obligations that they seldom have any time for her. Anton comes from a very poor background and works every evening in a little ice-cream parlour as a stand-in for his sick mother. In spite of these social differences, the two are the best of friends.
In the new film version of Erich Kästner's children's book of the same name, Annaluise isn't selling matches this time to help Anton earn some money, but is instead singing in Munich's town center while her parents are at the opera.
