Wicked Witch of the West review

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 23 May 2022 07:58

Quite the opposite of Nurse Ratched's reserved villain, the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz is about as cartoonish of an antagonist as there could be. Of course, in a story like this, the over-the-top evilness of the character works very well.

She is a being of pure evil, threatening Dorothy and even her adorable little dog. The Wicked Witch's terrifying army of flying monkeys surely helps to solidify her place as an iconic villain and likely one that haunted the dreams of many young viewers.

Body Double review

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 17 February 2019 07:37

Voyeurism, fetishism and pornography collide in a frenzied, unabashedly psychosexual pastiche of "Vertigo" and "Rear Window". Whilst De Palma foregrounding of 1980s culture adds a new dimension of outre trashiness to the proceedings, the film exists on its own plane as an artefact of its time, albeit by translating images and styles as a register on what separates the contemporary from the past in terms of sex and murder. Although commenting on Hitchcock's erotic themes and De Palma's clear evocation of them is a thorny subject considering the latter's high art valuation by critics, "Body Double" is nevertheless a stylish, unsettling remnant of Hitchcockian imagery and psychological bent as viewed through the fervid sheen and perversions of Hollywood.

A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 28 October 2016 12:07

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Still, I remember very well when I saw the damned thing. Indeed, I had invited a friend of mine who was also a major movie buff and we ended watching up some movies literally through the whole night. We started at 21:00 in the evening and ended on 06:00 the next day so it was definitely my biggest binge-watching night ever. Anyway, at the time, he suggested we should check this movie and I’m glad he did. Basically, even though Brian De Palma might have become famous with ‘Scarface’, it is actually with this kind of steamy thrillers that the guy basically built up his career. Apparently, the whole thing was apparently dismissed by the critics when it was released but I thought it was actually really entertaining. I mean, sure, the story was rather preposterous but I just loved the mood and I think that there was something quite spellbinding about this average guy turning into some kind of Peeping Tom. Obviously, the whole thing was remisnicent of ‘Rear Window’ and some other movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock but it didn’t bother me whatsoever, in the contrary. To conclude, even though it wasn’t really flawless, I really have a weak spot for the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Brian De Palma’s work.
