I have read several things by Japanese authors, and unfortunately the style tends to escape me. In the case of "Kitchen", two short novellas in one book, this was the case as well. Kitchen was adapted to film by Ho Yim in 1997. The title of the movie is "Wo ai chu fang", if you're looking for it(hard to find under "kitchen").
