A Hugo Award Winner?

I don't know what all the praise for this novel is for, and it's a Hugo Award Winner too. After 100 pages in I wanted to quit it because I felt lost at times and I didn't even know the characters either. They had no soul and I didn't even like their names. Steel? Woodcarver? Scarbutt?
