Darren Aronofsky's most profound and visually accomplished film. Requiem for a Dream is the most accurate depiction of addiction I've seen and it achieves this through visceral storytelling techniques and unique direction.

The Wrestler

Aronofsky's next achievement, after the financial failure that was The Fountain, is less ambitious and more restrained which renders it less impressive. However, The Wrestler is a well made and heart-wrenching drama which presents an emotional conflict of abandoning one's passion in favour of society's expectations. I strongly identified with his conflict and I suspect Aronofksy chose this project after the failure of the ambitious feat that was The Fountain and making a film which reflects his own professional circumstances.

Black Swan

Black Swan conforms to conventions of psychological thrillers and lacks the visionary originality of Requiem for a Dream. It becomes a transparent parody of superior films which focus on similar subject matter *cough-Mullholland-Drive-cough*. Hopefully Aronofsky compensates for this disappointment with a film whose material speaks to him.
